This giant oak is probably the oldest tree in Savernake Forest and is thought to be over 1,100 years old. It stands directly beside the busy A346 road between Marlborough and Burbage.
The Big Belly Oak (sometimes known as the Big-Bellied Oak) measures 11m (36 feet) around the base, and is supported by an iron band.
Amazingly, this ancient tree would have been just a tiny sapling at the time of the Battle of Hastings in 1066!

We all start somewhere. I captured this majestic sapling at Leeds Pond Preserve in Plandome Manor, Port Washington/Manhasset, Long Island.
Leeds Pond is a 35-acre preserve that overlooks Manhasset Bay, with the Victorian mansion on the property serving as home for the Science Museum of Long Island. Nature trails traverse a wooded valley with tulip trees and oaks, while a stream flows through a wetland into Leeds Pond.
