In the last ten years, Madison County, Virginia, has become a wine county with vines growing on some of the unlikeliest of properties. The tubes sheltering these sapling vines are for protection from critters, usually deer. I'm not sure about these tubes, but most of the newer ones are biodegradable and disappear within a few years. They are used for both grapevines and apple trees. Sapling apple trees are spaced much further apart.

Took a stroll in Barnes's Grove this morning as it looked a bit misty, but by the time I got there, no mist at all! The sun came out so looked for other photo opportunities and came across this bunch of saplings lit by the morning sun, their light bark almost made this image look infrared with the contrast of the darker wood behind.

I knew these saplings in the bright, low sun would make an interesting almost abstract B&W image

Ventana Wilderness - A hopeful sapling, growing up against the burned bark of a tree that died in the Soberanes fire (2016). So much of this trip was about bearing witness to the immensity of destruction wrought by wildfires, and how nature struggles to recover for decades or centuries after they leave the headlines. In some places, the young growth amidst charcoal felt hopeful, but in many others, this was not the case - old growth does not recover so quickly, and mammals were virtually nonexistent on this trip. Sobering to see it up close.

On an extremely windy and very wet spring day, saplings (and their brand new leaves), growing on a small crag below Hallin Fell, shiver during a very brief glimpse of sunlight, backed by a turbulent Ullswater.

I took a walk yesterday in the very foggy valley with the dogs. This section of the walk, through the woodland, is laden with dry crisp leaves fallen from the canopy of trees. This sapling tree glowed in the struggling light showing off its magnificent autumn splendour!

Seven young sibling Wood Ducks simultaneously become aware of an intruder encroaching on their mudflat sanctuary on Horsepen Bayou. Like many (but not all) fledgling birds on the bayou, they have been well schooled by their parents to be wary of strangers and they quickly headed across the water to the thick cover on the other bank.

An ICM photo of a grove of Aspen Saplings in spring.

As yet a another new modern housing development is approved the hillside nearby has been covered with the new generation of trees, bursting & ready to take their places in the sky. Many years from now this forest will hopefully camouflage that new busy road yet to open in the distance.

This is a close-up photo of the shadows of saplings cast on a rock face by the evening sun.

Autumn Alchemy - Padley Gorge

Situated adjacent to the National Trust property, Antony House and its formal garden, is the 100 acre Antony Woodland Garden and Woodland Walks. The unspoiled woodland sweeps down to the Lynher estuary, and as the seasons change, magnificent displays of camellias, rhododendrons, azaleas and magnolias can be found.
