Just a local sapling planted in my town - a cypress I think.

Sapling on the Sierra del Sueve

Taken on a short trip out earlier today. Archie and I enjoyed our exercise but the bitingly cold easterly wind meant we were both ready to head for the warmth of home sooner than expected.

A Borscht Belt bungalow colony once stood next to this little kiddie pool. The bungalows are long gone, but a larger pool remains, with a thicket of slender saplings growing from its floor.

I couldn't resist taking a shot of this oak sapling, blazing with colour in the hedgerow alongside the Rough Pastureland opposite my home.

Here is a photo of an Ironwood sapling (Olea capensis)... growing on a Ganoderma applanatus mushroom... which is firmly attached to the base of a dead and decomposing Ironwood tree.

A Rowan sapling sculpted by the wind sidelit by a blink of sun on a dull July afternoon.

If there is one visual that could represent the novel I'm writing, it would be this. I've been learning so much about story recently and had to come to terms with the fact that I don't know how to write a book. I wrote one, and I put "the end" on it, but it wasn't finished. It wasn't whole in any way. It was lacking, well, almost everything a novel needs to feel satisfying. But I never give up on my dreams, ever. I never let them fall away because I'm not good enough or I don't know enough or I feel inadequate. I've been reading and taking notes and studying every single day for at least 30 minutes (and dedicating every Wednesday to that end entirely). What I have learned has been tremendous, and I am energized and excited to write the book I've always dreamed of as it should be - poignant, powerful, and filled with creepy fairytale vibes.

Don't give up on what you love most, or what you want. If it doesn't work out the first time - GOOD. You are growing, as you should be. If it is easy, it is rarely worth it. We grow in our craft because we pursue things that are out of reach. I fear resting gently on what is mediocre. I'm not saying I am seeking perfection - far from it. I am seeking to be better than I was before. A constant series of rebirths that lead to work I am proud of, and a life I truly want to live.

Autumn's Embrace"

On the end of day 2 of my Zion fall color trip, I was exploring unnamed slot canyons searching for compositions when I came across this little scene. A young cottonwood sapling adorned in the brilliant yellow of peak fall color leans in towards a bright red maple sapling, which in turn leans in towards the cottonwood from a shelf above. This is an unusual scene, to see deciduous trees in fall color living in a desert slot canyon, and I think the juxtaposition of these different elements makes for a very beautiful combination.
