Norfolk Southern GP38-2 5337, painted in an Operation Lifesaver scheme, leads sister unit 5272 with a five car local through Battle Creek, Michigan, on CN's Flint Sub. The train came off the NS Michigan Line by way of a connection east on the southeast side of town and is bound for Kalamazoo to interchange with Watco's Grand Elk railroad. Operation Lifesaver is an organization that promotes railway safety. The organization partners with NS and Chicago's Metra. Both railroads have locomotives with the organizations logo painted on them.
When riding motorcycle, one should always be sure to wear the appropriate safety equipment. Notice how I am wearing sunglasses to protect my eyes from the sun's harmful UV rays. I'm also wearing runners, so that I don't burn my feet on the blistering hot pavement. Yup. You can never be too safe.
although it might be hard to see in this photo the top ladder is secured by a piece of rope. unfortunately the anchor point is close to the ground meaning if the ladder falls anyone upon it will come chasing down. another d'oh, but not me this time.

all arrows point away from the road workers behind this bright wall of orange cones and signs. not seen here are the two men whose sole purpose (it seemed) was to stand behind the barrier, observe the oncoming traffic, and wield yet another light. if there is one conspicuously ingrained value among the Japanese, it's their protection of human life. safety is a top priority.
