Sara and Luis arrived from Spain (Catalan) soon after Nina, Steffan and Hattie and then we were 7. Time to get some work done.

I spent a few hours around midnight on Saturday night out with the St John's Ambulance volunteers in the town centre helping create a safe environment for folk to have a good time. All part of Operation Safe Haven.

Some of you know I've been working again. Started a job in St. Catharines with a defense attorney, which is really different for me, and frankly, on some days, rather soul-crushing. Not all the time. But for years and years I worked for victims of crime and abuse. This is a different perspective, for sure. Some people just have really troubled lives and can't get themselves out for a myriad of reasons. Others are just cruel, self-serving, vicious pieces of....well, flesh.
But I'm working because, basically, I'd rather work than not work. I'm learning something new, whether I like it or not. I met this attorney when both she and I were working for the "other side", and she could not get steady work for the Crown (prosecutor's office), so she decided to take the plunge and do defense work. My contract was ending there, and we happened to be having lunch at the same place and talked about what we'd both be doing in the near future. When she said she was starting up on her own, I offered to help her with her office start up. Just experimentally for both of us, to see if we were a good fit, and if I could contribute something to her new adventure.
She called me a couple of months later and asked me if I was still interested. So, here I am. I am not at all sure if it's working out for either of us. We may yet decide to part ways, which is okay with me, frankly, as long as she provides me a letter of recommendation. I'd be happy to find something less caustic to my system, something that doesn't make me feel as though I've sold out...
The one good thing that comes from my day is that I've decided to take the stairs rather than the elevator. Sixth floor. About four times a day, both ways. Since I leave early for work, and get home late, it's mostly what I do for exercise now. If you watch this video, you'll see why I've linked to it for this shot, and why I've rambled on now for too long about my job.

Funny thing: While I’ve been busy showing you pictures of Bankhead National Forest and the light tunnel…we’ve had day after day of beautiful sunrises. And 2 days ago we had an epic sunset that everybody in town was talking about. (Winter sunsets are during the drive home from work, here in Huntsville.)
Not to worry, I’ve got them safely stowed away for a rainy day.
Another beautiful sunrise from the overlook at Monte Sano State Park, Huntsville, Alabama. It’s amazing how many more lights you can see every year — after the leaves have fallen off the trees.

Thought I'd upload a few more of my favourite portraits of people who have touched our lives this year.
The safe zone! In a future over taken by dinosaurs the only survivable locations are the safe zones! 12 foot curved electric fences topped with barbed wire is enough to hold back any raptors but the defences don't hold out against the T Rex...
When I see a single tree in a field around here, more often than not, the tree is surrounded by rocks. These inland islands act as a safe haven for small animals and other trees, usually offspring of the original tree that deemed it a good place for a rock pile. When there's no trees in a field, you're bound to find a rock pile somewhere along the perimeter of the field. That's because they pick rocks from the field to make it easier for the roots of whatever they're growing to get into the soil. I know this because I've picked rocks when I was young.
Well probably safe if it stays in the town, I'm desperate for the cubs to stay with their family, badger dispersal is very unpredictable though. The ' happy ' look on its face made me laugh, a much needed one : )
I've put loads of pictures on in one go for some reason, feel free to have a rummage like the cub's doing. I'll try and get back to normal with Flickr, as normal as I can be anyway.
There's not much hope left but the Badger Trust's latest legal challenge is to be heard in the court of appeal on September 11th.

Those shoulders are really quite small, but they do appear broader here - wonder why :)

Time passed too quickly though and after a week or so Sara & Luis invited us all to their camper van for one coffee before continuing their journey on to Bosnia.
Gotta work tonight.Tons of paperwork. Got another day in the studio on Saturday ;-) Catch you peeps later. Thanks for popping in. Make yourselves at home.

I have worked with Gemma a few times over a period of some years, but this was our first shoot together - outdoor art nudes in her garden and on the beach.
