Because my VicVipers always have to have a gimmick, I decided to try building one with variable swept wings this year. Like the 2017 model, it was based on sketching out various ideas, one of which was to have it be a "Sometimes Vic". It only strictly meets the criteria with the wings deployed.

The gearing situation was fun to mess with. You twist the engine to move the wings. There is an unfortunate amount of slop when doing so, however. Maybe some of you Technic buffs have pointers?

All in all, a highly enjoyable build and very swooshable.

After CSX L135 grabbed their cars from York Rail at Smiths, they came back to Center Street yard just east of Hanover, PA. Here they broke the train apart and switched it to be in a proper order.

Three and a half years before the prior shot I caught train 911 making a rather rare stop at Caffey with 807, 383 and 717. The units were parked in such a way that required me to shoot with a garbage wide angle lens to avoid placing the crossing signals between me and 807. It was late afternoon on November 5, 1977 and the sun was about to drop into a cloud bank while the units sat pumping air on there late running 111 car train. After spending a good part of 75 and early 76 in storage the U-boats were back on the main making appearances east of Gladstone. About a year after this shot I seen my last SOO U30C go through Trout Lake. I've seen shots of them working in 1979 but none ventured east of Gladstone that I ever was aware of after November 1978.

The A&M Sand Switcher begins its day switching the various sand plants around Springdale and Rogers. The Monnett Turn and Rogers Local will go on duty within the hour followed by the Springdale Local later that morning. Central Maine & Quebec train No. 1, led by three ex-Canadian Pacific SD40-2Fs, switches the Moose River Lumber Co siding at Jackman, Maine on Nov. 21, 2017. Once a load of lumber is picked up and a cut of logs are spotted on the siding, the American crew will park the train to await a Canadian crew that will take it to Farnham, Quebec.

I was headed to an estate sale last weekend and unbeknownst to me it was located in a shop in the Subtropolis district of Kansas City, MO. On the long drive in through the tunnel complex we passed this switcher engine parked on a siding in one of the tunnels. I stopped and shot two frames with my Mamiya C330 TLR...this one turned out the best. This was the first time I've been in Subtropolis and it is an amazing underground limestone cavern that is big enough to accomodate this train engine and semi trucks that service the businesses at this location. I shot this at f16 for 8 seconds and I was using Foma 400 film.

CEFX 1569 and NECR 3840 work the yard at Brantford.

D&S 107 switches out the next days 461, which it'll pull. One of the signs of the changing times on the D&S the last several years has been the introduction of road diesels-electrics. After what I'll politely call a "mistake" with 2 custom made engines for them, D&S decided to go for a more proven model when they announced that they were acquiring 4 DL535E's from the White Pass & Yukon Route. Ordered by the White Pass in 1969, the first 7 of the 10 started being built at ALCO's Schenectady Works before the comapny folded & were sent to their Montreal Locomotive Works subsidiary. Still sporting the classic green & yellow scheme of the White Pass, this engine serves as a sign of the changing times that'll allow the D&S to continue to operate & also give us railfans a chance to now see these engines in action now without having to go to Alaska. 9-3-21

At the Minnesota Commerical's Midway Yard a pair of old GE B23-7's switch out AC tank cars. #44 and 43 were built for the ATSF in 1979 and still doing its part to serve railroad customers in 2023 and hopefully, years to come.

Once switching has been completed, Union Pacific's LDI04 "Local 4" with a pair of SD40N's begin to shove back to their train on the siding at Greeley, Colorado after picking up some gondolas and a box car at a couple of industries on January 25, 2017.

A 500mm zoom shot of a Seven Cities Scot Rail HST passing Greenloaning signal box working a Dundee to Glasgow service. The box has been switched out for a number of years, and despite the fact the passing loops have been disconnected, the loop signals are still in place. I suppose it is only a matter of time before it all disappears.

CA-11 with the NS 5221 leading hits the switch off the Penns Grove Secondary and onto the Vineland Secondary.

Just a simple shot I kind of like of this switcher framed up nicely between the short waving cane and the tall swaying palms.

Sunday morning dawned clear and dry so after a great Cuban breakfast I checked out the shop then drove down south of town for some morning shots of the east side of the Clewiston Mill, the beating heart of US Sugar Corporation and it's truly impressive rail operation. I hiked down from Davidson Road east of tracks along the levee a half mile or so where I could look west at Sugar Junction and the mill yard.

If you have a long lens this is a really cool spot to pull in some of the action and photograph locomotives that don't get out on the road. This 400mm telephoto shot illustrates how modern this railroad is with a solar panel and signal visible for a DTMF controlled power switch of which there are hundreds on this railroad. And it's also quite clear that no one is in the cab if this loco which is working a dump job at the mill and is being operated by remote control.

A dual in-line package (DIP) switch. Dual in-line packaging is a standard style for many electronic devices and DIP switches are often used to set various options on the device. Standard spacing between pins is 0.1" or 2.54mm.

Slightly less than 1.5:1 reproduction ratio.

Strobist info: the switch is lying on its back (side away from the numbers) on the diffuser on an EX 430 III at 1/64 power. A second bare EX 430 III at 1/128 power is touching the side of the lens and aimed almost directly toward the nearest pin-side corner to light the front and create slight shadows. The front of the second flash about 1.5" from the switch and about 1.5" in front of the lens.

Just another view from the East Randall Wobbe Ln. crossing into little five track yard north of town where the Arkansas and Missouri Railroad classifies its traffic.

I really wanted a good sunny shot here but they were all filtered light except for this one. Alas I didn't have my long lense on so had to settle for this wide view, but it's kind of grown on me over time. I like the brightly lit train and the foreground shadow of the cloud that is moments from swallowing the scene. This view of the whole yard shows its rather diminutive size that belies its role as the main hub of A&M operations.

This is train SFLO (the Springdale local) which was on duty at 11 AM with this pair of classic Alco C420s, numbers 56 and 57 both built for the Lehigh and Hudson River Railroad in Dec. 1965 as their numbers 25 and 26 respectively. They are seen here kicking up dust in the sand coated yard near MP 341.9 (measured from the Frisco's historic corporate headquarters city of St. Louis).
