Scottish nurseryman Henry Eckford (1823–1905) cross-bred and developed the sweet pea, turning it from a rather insignificant if sweetly scented flower into a floral sensation of the late Victorian era. --Wikipedia. It is believed that it was the poet John Keats who gave this “birth flower” of April the name of sweet pea.

Happy Sunday everyone! I am headed to the supermarket today, and not looking forward to it. Maybe the bad weather will keep most people away. Mask on, fingers crossed ;-)

Sunday morning brings the dawning

It’s just a restless feeling by my side

Early dawning, Sunday morning

It’s just the wasted years so close behind

Bronte Pool on a Sunday Morning.

It's a very hot, quiet, lazy Sunday. I wanted to go back out to the field today and nail down the last of the juvenile IDs but no such luck. The people who work here, go out to the field day after day, week after week, month after month, year after year. This is not a six week adventure for them so they really do need a day off once a week.

Sunday's are special days around camp. The main event is pancakes for breakfast (think thick, greasy crepes that are quite delicious). Theoretically it's also a day when people can sleep in which in most cases mean people get up around 6 instead of at 5 am. It's very hard to sleep in around here which works well for me as I'm an extreme morning person. The birds start waking up around 5:45, it starts getting light very soon after that, and since you're all in tents, once the first person gets up, you can pretty much hear everything going on. This particular Sunday morning started with a roar, literally at 5:15.

Given that going out to the field was not an option, I decided to read a mystery and take pictures of the game around camp.

The prettiest visitors, in my opionion, were the Superb starlings. We have about 15 species of birds that commonly hang out right in front of the kitchen. They drink out of water bowls that Nkii leaves out for them and eat off the dishes that haven't been washed yet.

As I was sitting outside the kitchen waiting for the birds to come around (it's that phenomenon where animals are constantly doing something until you get your camera out), when an adult female vervet came around a bush and saw me. We had several vervets around today.

Finally, a small group of elephants walked by and as you can see, they literally walked across our driveway.

This all happened before lunch. What a place.

For the cat lovers, I also saw a very lean, grey tabby with tan splotches all over and a nearly red tail tip. I've never seen a cat with coloring even remotely similar.

Angus beef top sirloin roast, with baked potato, glazed carrots, Brussels sprouts, and a red wine mushroom sauce. It was excellent! Btw, I’m from Texas, so the British term “Sunday Roast” is not used here in my part of the world but I sure do like it!

To all mothers.

Mothering Sunday is a Christian festival celebrated throughout Europe. Secularly it is used as a celebration of motherhood, and is synonymous to Mother's Day as celebrated in other countries; the latter name is also increasingly used.

A religious festival celebrating motherhood has been existent in Europe since approximately 250 BC when the Romans honoured the mother goddess Cybele during mid-March. As the Roman Empire and Europe converted to Christianity, Mothering Sunday celebrations became part of the liturgical calendar as Laetare Sunday, the fourth Sunday in Lent to honour the Virgin Mary and the "mother church".

For many years the utilitarian Class 156 plied their trade in the North West, North East, and Central England as well as Scotland.

They were used on inter-urban services like these between Manchester Airport and Preston and Blackpool and here 2 units run back and forth on the approaches to Manchester Piccadilly.

We had our first completely sunny day of the year this past Sunday, and it was also the first day I was able to get out and about again after my battle with the flu. I felt about as happy and energized as the sun in this photo. I could actually feel a lot of warmth from the sun, despite the cold wind.

Palm Sunday

Observances of the Last Sunday of Lent

Palm Sunday ranks as one of Christianity's holiest days, second only to Christmas and Easter. Palm Sunday falls on the last Sunday of Lent (the Sunday before Easter) and marks the beginning of Holy Week.

The History of Palm Sunday

First known as the Pascha (Passover), the meaning of Palm Sunday can be understood by looking at the history of the Christian church. Palm Sunday originated in the Jerusalem Church, around the late fourth century. The ceremony consisted of prayers, hymns, and sermons recited by the clergy while the people moved among various holy sites throughout the city. At the last site, where Christ ascended into heaven, the clergy would read from the gospels concerning the entry of Jesus into Jerusalem. In the early evening they would return to the city reciting: "Blessed is He that comes in the name of the Lord." The children would carry palm and olive branches as the people returned through the city to the church, where they would hold evening services.

By the fifth century, the Palm Sunday celebration had spread as far as Constantinople. Changes made in the sixth and seventh centuries resulted in two new Palm Sunday traditions - the ritual blessing of the palms, and a morning procession instead of an evening one. Adopted by the Western Church in the eighth century, the celebration received the name "Dominica in Palmis," or "Palm Sunday".

The Meaning of Palm Sunday

Palm Sunday commemorates the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem to celebrate the Passover. The gospels record the arrival of Jesus riding into the city on a donkey, while the crowds spread their cloaks and palm branches on the street and shouted "Hosanna to the Son of David" and "Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord" to honor him as their long-awaited Messiah and King.

The significance of Jesus riding a donkey and having his way paved with palm branches is a fulfillment of a prophecy spoken by the prophet Zechariah (Zechariah 9:9). In biblical times, the regional custom called for kings and nobles arriving in procession to ride on the back of a donkey. The donkey (or domesticated ass) was a symbol of peace; those who rode upon them proclaimed peaceful intentions. The laying of palm branches indicated that the king or dignitary was arriving in victory or triumph.
