This afternoon after storm

Incredible sky last night and luckily I had made a last minute decision to drive to Baslow edge. Curbar edge can be seen to the right and there were several photographers up there.

2021.02.25 - After a light snowfall last night the city is looking spectacular under a pure blue sky and warmer temperatures. Just incredible.

ā€œVaranasi is one of India’s most ancient cities and a major pilgrimage site. Its beauty lies in its centuries-old traditions, spectacular ghats, and narrow winding streets. It is a city full of beauty and history, known for its vibrant culture, colourful temples and old buildings. The river Ganga is the lifeblood of the city, and all along its banks, visitors can see millions of devotees visiting temples, offering prayers, and the constant cycle of life happening. Kashi, which means ā€œcity of light,ā€ is seen as the city of faith, work, and salvation. Here, beauty and spirituality come together in a way that tourists can see and feel.ā€

A spectacular air show upon the arrival of the snow geese in Sacramento, California. Their annual migration dates back for thousands of years as they fly from as far as the Arctic along the Pacific Flyway to warmer places as far as Mexico. Sacramento, plays an important role for a stopover for these birds, to rest their exhausted wings and to feed on the rice field for a few days. I was lucky to be right the time and place to capture this intimate moment of their arrival.

Returned to the forest to take a picture of the rustgill in a habitat setting. Spectacular rustgill - Gymnopilus-junonious

Sun goes down. Skies light up. Crescent moon follows the sun

Purple bathes the tableau. So beautiful!

This was a crazy colors sunset at Lake Marmo in the Morton Arboretum, and very hard to capture.

This is an exposure bracket/focus stack blend of 7 bracketed captures. The edges of the very dark leaves against the bright sky were difficult to try and save.

Hope you are having a wonderful Spring-ish time!

SN/NC: Mucuna Bennettii, Fabaceae Family

The Red Jade Vine (Mucuna bennettii) is a spectacular and still rare tropical climber. Its flowering is unique: long, hanging clusters that can reach one meter in length, with bright red flowers of an exotic shape, similar to a bird's beak. The dense, glossy green foliage is ornamental even when not in bloom. It is a vigorous and hardy plant, ideal for covering large pergolas and arbors, where its stunning clusters can be admired from below. It prefers full sun, fertile soil, and a warm climate, as it does not tolerate frost.

Mount's Bay is a large, sweeping bay on the English Channel coast of Cornwall, stretching from the Lizard Point to Gwennap Head. In the north of the bay. Near the village of Marazion, is St Michael's Mount, the origin of the name of the bay.

St Michael's Mount, is the most famous of Cornwall's landmarks. Originally the site of a Benedictine Chapel, the spectacular castle on the rock dates from the 14th Century when Guy St. Aubin made it his home. The St Aubyn family created a stunning garden with pathways that wind their way up to the main entrance of the mount through carefully planted slopes that feature many sub-tropical species.

In 1954, Francis St Aubyn, 3rd Lord St Levan, gave a large part of the island to the National Trust, under a unique arrangement whereby the family have a 999-year lease to live in the castle and a licence to operate the visitor business.

In 2003, James and Mary St Aubyn moved to the castle with their four children. They, in their turn, became Lord and Lady St Levan in 2013 and still live on the island today.

A Dramatic panorama of Mout Taranaki

This lovely Rhododendron was filmed in Wellington, New Zealand.

To round off the journey that was Japan, what better way to finish it then with a picture of the Himeji Castle. An immense historical place and the structure is unbelievable, one of my favourite castles of the world and as a fan of Kurosawa seeing where Kagumusha and one of my favourite films, Ran, were filmed was beyond spectacular.

A BNSF double stack train approaches Winslow, IIRC, while behind then I enjoy a fantastic Arizona sunset.

"For every sun / there is a fitting set of glasses".

Storm Malik blew in quite extraordinary lighting & water effects at Winscar yesterday. Stunning.

A spectacular sunset over our favourite hill, Bennachie in Aberdeenshire, Scotland.

It's hard to believe but this storm got even more spectacular.

Picture of the Day

Grand Canyon National Park in winter, near sunset.

Still in Kootenay, but a much more recent shot (only ten years old!). The Vermillion River runs parallel with Highway 93, the park's only highway and the route that connects it with Banff, in Alberta. One afternoon I found a pullout, and after a short walk, this view along the shoreline, looking north.

It was late August, sublime weather - these were the years when forest fire smoke was not a huge factor - and although I was on my way to the west coast to visit a sick friend, I camped in the park for two nights and hiked a couple of the shorter trails. That brought back memories. A few years earlier, I used Kootenay as the starting point for a fairly long backpacking trip into Mount Assiniboine Provincial Park. It's the most physically challenging way to access this spectacular area, but the up side was pretty special: nobody uses this route. So I had a couple nights of very quiet camping at increasingly dramatic locations as I got up out of the forest and into the high country. I hiked this trail three times, in 1979, 1988, and 1990, and made it all the way twice. In 1988 a massive early snowfall forced me to turn back. These were my glory days, and every time I drive Highway 93 through this park, I get to relive them!

I used my trusty old (from 1981) manual focus Nikon 24mm lens for this, with a polarizing filter to intensify the colours a little. It's a great lens; I still use it occasionally.
