Dad and I just built up his new bike, a Soma Double Cross.

Parts List:

Frame: Soma Double Cross Frame Ivory size 56cm

Fork: Bontrager Satellite Carbon

Wheels: Velo Orange (VO) PBP Shimano 105 Hubs

Tires: Grand Bois Cypress 700x30

Casette: Shimano Ultegra 12-28 10speed

Crankset: Shimano 105 Triple

Bottom Bracket: Shimano Ultegra

Rear Derailleur: Shimano Ultegra GS 10speed

Front Derailleur: Shomano Ultegra

Shifters: Shimano Dura-Ace Bar Ends 10speed SL-BS79

Brakes: Levers Tektro FL 730, Front Brake Tektro Caliper 538, Rear Brake Shimano Cantilever BR-R550 (which DO in fact work with linear pull levers!)

Cables: VO Braided

Headset: Grand Cru from Veloorange.com

Stem: VO 100mm 17deg. rise

Bars: Nitto Albatros

Grips: Rivendell Cork that we twined and shellaced with Bullseye Amber Shellac

Seatpost: VO Grand Cru setback seatpost

Saddle: Brooks B17 Special Honey

Bottle Cages: VO Modernista

Fenders: VO 45mm hammered polished fenders

We started with the bare frame, and it went together fairly seamlessly. The trickiest part was installing the fenders, but even that wasn’t too bad. Rides like a dream. Smooth, relaxed, but handles very well and is actually quite fast. The drivetrain all works flawlessly, and the bar ends are actually quite nice after using STI’s for so long. Absolutely love the Nitto Albatross bars. And these tires are incredible, the smoothest fastest rolling tires I’ve used to date! My dad chose every single part, so it is truly HIS bike!

First samples of our new mixed terrain/gravel tire in 700c.

Finally completed assembling the Soma Cube from the 10cm squares of wood grain memo pad papers. The assembly is very much stable with some of the Sonobe modules being modified by releasing the folded corner/s of the paper. Having all the 7 pieces of the Soma Cube of the same colour will pose a more challenging task to reconstruct the assembled solutions.

First-generation Soma Juice still alive and kickin'. It's the same bike reviewed by Mountain Bike Action back in 2006 with modern drivetrain and hydraulic brakes.

Detail from “Soma" (2009) by the Flaming Lotus Girls- a Black Rock arts collective- that is currently installed at the Embarcadero waterfront with interactive LEDs replacing its fiery bits.

The title of the piece ricochets off the neighborhood to its south, the ancient Vedic ritual drink, Aldus Huxley's ideal pleasure beverage from "Brave New World," and, quite specifically, the region of a neuron that contains its nucleus, AKA the "soma" or "perikaryon."

Velo Orange 650b 52cm Zepplin fenders, V.O. Constructeur racks, Nitto Technomics stem, Carradice saddle bag,

Set up for light touring. Berthoud fenders. The stem is temporary for sizing. Waiting for the Tubus rear rack and Ortlieb bags. 58 cm bike.
