Dad and I just built up his new bike, a Soma Double Cross.
Parts List:
Frame: Soma Double Cross Frame Ivory size 56cm
Fork: Bontrager Satellite Carbon
Wheels: Velo Orange (VO) PBP Shimano 105 Hubs
Tires: Grand Bois Cypress 700x30
Casette: Shimano Ultegra 12-28 10speed
Crankset: Shimano 105 Triple
Bottom Bracket: Shimano Ultegra
Rear Derailleur: Shimano Ultegra GS 10speed
Front Derailleur: Shomano Ultegra
Shifters: Shimano Dura-Ace Bar Ends 10speed SL-BS79
Brakes: Levers Tektro FL 730, Front Brake Tektro Caliper 538, Rear Brake Shimano Cantilever BR-R550 (which DO in fact work with linear pull levers!)
Cables: VO Braided
Headset: Grand Cru from Veloorange.com
Stem: VO 100mm 17deg. rise
Bars: Nitto Albatros
Grips: Rivendell Cork that we twined and shellaced with Bullseye Amber Shellac
Seatpost: VO Grand Cru setback seatpost
Saddle: Brooks B17 Special Honey
Bottle Cages: VO Modernista
Fenders: VO 45mm hammered polished fenders
We started with the bare frame, and it went together fairly seamlessly. The trickiest part was installing the fenders, but even that wasn’t too bad. Rides like a dream. Smooth, relaxed, but handles very well and is actually quite fast. The drivetrain all works flawlessly, and the bar ends are actually quite nice after using STI’s for so long. Absolutely love the Nitto Albatross bars. And these tires are incredible, the smoothest fastest rolling tires I’ve used to date! My dad chose every single part, so it is truly HIS bike!

During the 1980's and 1990's Soma had quite a large range of 1/64 models in all types of styles and colours with some even featuring opening parts such as this Pontiac Fiero. Not the best quality but these were usually a lot cheaper than Western equivalents and were usually available in cheap multi vehicle sets, this one being part of a large 30 vehicle Hills branded one. Mint and boxed.

Nearing the state of being 'dialed in'. Mrs.S has ridden it almost daily for the past two months. Switched out the MKS touring pedals for Wellgo comfort pedals, and swapped the Brooks B17 for a B67. The only changes from this point on will be the addition of a front basket and a vintage French chain guard (the porteur chaincase did not work out and was removed). The cork grips will probably get wrapped in cotton tape and shellacked to match the saddle.

Spring is in the air, and I'm dreaming about touring season again. This will be my third season touring with this bike. I built it myself (with some help from a bike mechanic friend!), and have at least 5,000 touring miles on it, but who's counting?!? Planning on another RAGBRAI this year, and possibly a trip to New Orleans in the fall. Some of my favorite features are the third bottle cage spot and the spoke holder built into the frame, plus the nice parts list including a highly recommended Sugino crank. Also, it's my favorite color. Enjoy the view :)
