The poetic forms of people swimming at the Kowloon park in Hong Kong.

# Soundtrack by Tomo Nakaguchi (CCBY)

I’ve shot a lot of videography but they are often stuck in queue because writing music is not my forte. But I have found a solution. SoundCloud now supports Creative Commons search, and I found this beautiful composition composed by Japanese musician Tomo Nakaguchi. The piece is titled “Swim” and it has the dreamy quality which I seek for this video.

I publish everything via Creative Commons when I can, so it is nice to also be able to use other people’s assets. Creative Commons make the world go round. SML Thank You!

Noting that there seems always a football (soccer) game going on at the Ma On Shan Sports Ground near me, I brought the 6D and the 100-400 with me to see if I can photograph live action sports as I have intended to. It was a lot harder than I thought originally. I shot most of these in ISO 12800 so you see that on the 6D they are quite usable, but the 6D lacks the fast frame rate which the 7D has—but the 7D is not fast enough. Compromises. I might have to think of saving money for a 1Dx at some point…

The 馬鞍山運動場 Ma On Shan Sports Ground is a multi-use sports ground built at 1 Hang Hong Road, Ma On Shan, Sha Tin, Hong Kong at a cost of HK$153 million (~US$19.73 million). It opened in 1999. The sports ground is managed by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department of Hong Kong.

This pano was shot handheld with the Canon EOS 7D + Canon EF 70-200 f/4L USM + EF 1.4x Extender III. The 24 RAW files are first imported to Lightroom 4, then exported as 16-bit AdobeRGB files, and then stitched together using the open source Hugin software using a Rectilinear projection.

Conventional wisdom might suggest that it would be easier to photograph pano using a wide angle lens. The truth is, it is easier to use a long lens if it is possible because telephoto lens have much less geometric distortion and as such makes it easier to stitch even when you don’t have tripod with you.

The resulting TIF flat is 745 MB big with a 40611 x 2292 resolution. If you are still wondering why I am shopping for a RAID config + buying at 24" large format printer. This is why.

I have been hunting for a location to photograph the skyline in Central for a while, but it has not been easy, as it is very crowded everywhere.

But I found a spot last night when I went to the City Hall for a drama performance—right here. This is the entrance to City Hall, and it is an empty car park right old side with a perfect view of the entire downtown financial district.

As a handheld panorama, I could not really evaluate the the FOV I needed, so you will see that I did not crop it at all. But the important bits is that I now know where to get to with my tripod. Trust that you will see a better rendering of this on my stream some time in the future.

In the front is the City Hall, then progressing all the way to the right is International Finance Centre (IFC), one of the tallest office buildings in Hong Kong.

This is stitched together using 12 fullres 7D RAW portrait captures handheld. Color balance is a bit of an issue here, so when I go back and work on it again I might process it as black and white.

This is the facade of Jardine House (Chinese: 怡和大廈), one of my favourite architecture in Hong Kong. It was formerly known as Connaught Centre (康樂大廈), but it was renamed some time later. Since I was not aware of its renaming until moving back to Hong Kong in 2012, I deduced that it was likely renamed between 1995-2012. Wikipedia did not say when, but this was the period when I was not living in Hong Kong.

Jardine House is an office tower in Hong Kong. It features these gorgeous circular windows on its facade. With a time-lapse series, it could very possibly be seen playing digital notes, but I don’t yet have access to a secure location in Hong Kong with a view of this architecture, and I am not about to hang out on the street the whole night to photograph that. So until then, here is a still, photographed from the vantage point of City Hall late at night.

Yes this would look very good in black and white also, and it shall be processed as such later on. For now though I think that the disparate yellow lights add a bit of charm to the overall composition so I kept it.

For reasons which escapes me, my photo of the 警輪 Police Launch 51 [1] was crazy popular in Japan (as reported by Bitly click-throughs), but I don’t really know why. So I thought that I will post more of these ships as they are fun to see.

The 警輪 Police Launch 21 is smaller in size. I guess the Hong Kong Marine Police must have different uses for them, though I don’t really know what the categories are.

Good thing is, I recently met a guy who retired from the 香港水警 Hong Kong Marine Police force not a long while back. Next time I see him I will ask him what they are about. Like I said, knowing random people in the universe is useful.

This is the setup for a panorama of the Ma On Shan Sports Ground to be posted later. While the panoramas done handheld in the past have yielded decent results, the near planes have not been perfect. To get perfect seams you really need to do things right—with a tripod and cable release. Ideally you would also use a pano head, which I do not own. But really you need a pano in the old days when you have to do it by hand. These days any pano stitching software, including both the excellent and free Hugin as well as Photoshop, can correct geometric distortions so even if your image sensor is not located at the perfect spot (which is basically what a pano head allows you to do), the results can be excellent. As you can see many of the handheld panoramas I have posted earlier on the stream, in the digital age, that bit is mostly a luxury.

When doing panoramas, having a leveled camera would save pixels, so the built-in electronic leveling on the 7D (pictured) is super useful.

Photographed with iPhone 5, processed in Snapseed.

A team of football (soccer) players hanging out at the shed next to the the soccer pitch after a game at the 馬鞍山遊樂場人造草地足球場 Ma On Shan Recreation Ground Artificial Turf Soccer Pitch in Hong Kong.

Chinese have great genes. When I saw them play I had assumed that they were all teenagers, but judging from this photo they are probably mostly older than me—which would explain why they can be playing football at this hour on a weekday. :)

With the gradual reduction of available fossil fuel reserves and the impact on the environment of fossil fuel use, Hong Kong Government made it its mission to utilise renewable energy whenever possible.

Pictured is a 風力發電機 Wind Turbine seen at the 馬鞍山海濱長廊 Ma On Shan Promenade. Together with the 太陽能及風能燈 Solar and Wind Hybrid Lamps, these facilities provide most of the electricity needed to keep the park running at night by storing the necessary energy during the day.

The Light-vented Bulbul (Pycnonotus sinensis 白頭鵯), also known as the Chinese Bulbul or 白頭翁 in Chinese, is a bird and a member of the bulbul family [1, 2, 3].

These birds are common in East Asia, and they feed on fruits and insects (pictured). They are mostly characterised by their black heads with a large white patch covering the napes and bellies. Their wings are in yellow and green stripes.

Bulbuls breed in the fall seasons, and tend to cluster together in the woods to call in a “cha-ko-lee...cha-ko-lee…” sound.

Faces are everywhere. I did not take this photo because it looks like a face. I liked the proportion of the forms. But when I started working on it I can’t help but notice the logos from the Transformer movie / toys series. Once registered it is difficult to not see them anymore. Perhaps subconsciously I am drawn to the proportions because it is similar to a face? Feel free to analyse me.

This is a photo of the Ma On Shan MTR station. The ladder like forms are the train tracks. The entire Ma On Shan Line runs parallel and above the highway as an elevated track. The station is located below the tracks in the yellow area, and is connected to two shopping malls.

Some captures are so challenging to attempt to process in Lightroom I would not even bother to try and I would open it as smart object in Photoshop to process immediately.

The light (sun) is coming directly behind the front gate of the 天街 (“Heavenly Street”), but what I is obviously to show the writing on the gate. In the past it was very challenging because it used to mean having to either do some insane masking (which I generally prefer not to) or letting the sky blow out (which is less ideal but doable). These days H+S (Highlight and Shadow) is the perfect tool for it.

For this particular photo, a fairly heavy handed H+S is applied—see screenshot of particular settings at cl.ly/image/0a081L383e2q I don’t generally recommend pushing tonal width to the max for most photos, but often for extreme cases such as this one it is useful.

Usually if anything is eventually going to print I try to do everything else in Photoshop also but since this one is just intended for Flickr (for now) I imported into Lightroom and tweaked to satisfaction. Mostly I tweaked the sharpening with some heavy masking (hold down “option” to view black+white is a good way to see what you are actually adjusting). Backlit objects usually have fairly severe chromatic aberration so a very heavy-handed chromatic aberration is applied also—normally I don’t do this but like I said, this is an unusual circumstance. Screenshot here: cl.ly/image/3P3F12253L3l Also note in the screenshot that when I work with sky I generally turn on the white point “triangle” so it would show me which areas are blown out. It is easier to work with using Curves in Photoshop so if I eventually decide to print anything I usually rework them but again for Flickr for now it is good enough.

I might eventually turn this into black and white but I did how the clothes that the people are wearing matches the sun glow (yellow) and the cold shadow color (blue) so I picked this capture to process instead of another shot without humans in it.

I developed a new technique for photographing at night without a tripod with the 7D. Specifically, it can be summarised as “wait-and-shoot”.

Previously I have used this technique mostly with point-and-shoots but I did not realize that I could do the same with the 7D. I have always thought that the remote release meant that it had to be wireless, but apparently you can do it with the 7D also:

1. Set the drive to be remote with a 2-sec lag

2. Frame the picture

3. Shutter release and then hold still like a tripod.

4. Click!

The reason that it works is because although there is camera shake while you release the shutter, by holding still you eliminate much of the shake. Obviously it still doesn’t beat having a tripod, but as you can see here if you can hold relatively still, this 1/13 sec exposure is possible.

As previously noted, socks attached to clothes hanger were seen to be hanging dry on the street [1]. But lately I noticed a blatantly crazy display — the whole block lined with clothes liners.

This was seen at a yet-undeveloped plot next to the Ma On Shan Promenade. On the park sign—which I shall show later—there actually is an item which says “請勿晾曬衣物 No Drying of Linen and Clothes.” I even saw the lady who was doing this. She looks like a maid from the neighborhood, and she had a whole bucket of them.

To make this even more WTF is the fact that technically there is no sign on this particular strip, so she took out the entire block, and meanwhile just a few steps away there was this sign. She saw me photographing and she looked away, but after I am done she is back on putting more clothes on.

I don’t do spy photography and I do not wish to trouble her difficult life, but this is a far cry beyond the singular socks. It downright cheapens the neighborhood. Please don’t do this near me, especially not at the promenade, ok?

Two giant clocks with white marks and handles are fixated on a bright blue background next to the giant digital display at the Ma On Shan Sports Ground. Aside from having tracks for running, there is a standard soccer field inside, so it looks like that these clocks were designed for football.

The one on top shows the standard Hong Kong Time, where as the one below I think is for soccer.

Standard adult football match consists of two periods of 45 minutes each, known as halves. Each half runs continuously, meaning that the clock is not stopped when the ball is out of play. There is usually a 15-minute half-time break between halves. [1]

Thank You for Your Visit, Have a Nice Day is a performance piece by Agata Olek (Facebook / Flickr / Portfolio) created for Art in Odd Places:SIGN, an annual festival exploring the odd, ordinary and ingenious in the spectacle of daily life.

Curated by Erin Donnelly and Radhika Subramaniam

Director of AIOP: Ed Woodham

Artist Statement

"Inspired by a uniformed attendant holding the sign Hold the Handrail in a Taipei metro station, I've created this moving installation/performance piece. In wearable sculptures of multicolored crocheted camouflage, my performers appear in various sites on 14th Street, displaying photographs of signs I've collected from different countries that are in emphatic, ironic or amused dialogue with their location."

A man training for soccer inside the hard-surfaced soccer pitch at the Ma On Shan Recreation Grounds on a foggy afternoon.

This photo was stitched using 5 RAW captures. The bars blocked the view somewhat on the right but depending on use I guess it is possible to either crop the center to see the context for the buildings around the soccer pitch, or crop low to show the full soccer pitch. So I kept it. As usual, this was photographed for personal stock use.

I am learning more about the Hugin stitcher. Apparently by default it will mask out everything which is not in every frame, but it is possible to include areas of interest—so it is in fact possible to do multiple exposure if I wish to. For this photo I included the guy because it adds life to the photograph. But it is just as easy to leave him out. Lots of fun — all in an open source program. Highly recommended!

13th annual D.U.M.B.O. Art Under the Bridge Festival® (Sept 25 to Sept 27, 2009)

www.dumboartfestival.org/press_release.html

The three-day multi-site neighborhood-wide event is a one-of-a-kind art happening: where serendipity meets the haphazard and where the unpredictable, spontaneous and downright weird thrive. The now teenage D.U.M.B.O. Art Under the Bridge Festival® presents touchable, accessible, and interactive art, on a scale that makes it the nation's largest urban forum for experimental art.

Art Under the Bridge is an opportunity for young artists to use any medium imaginable to create temporary projects on-the-spot everywhere and anywhere, completely transforming the Dumbo section of Brooklyn, New York, into a vibrant platform for self-expression. In addition to the 80+ projects throughout the historical post-industrial waterfront span, visitors can tour local artists' studios or check out the indoor video_dumbo, a non-stop program of cutting-edge video art from New York City and around the world.

The Dumbo Arts Center (DAC) has been the exclusive producer of the D.U.M.B.O Art Under the Bridge Festival® since 1997. DAC is a big impact, small non-profit, that in addition to its year-round gallery exhibitions, is committed to preserving Dumbo as a site in New York City where emerging visual artists can experiment in the public domain, while having unprecedented freedom and access to normally off-limit locations.

Usually car parks are built underground. But here in Hong Kong, some car parks are built above ground high up in buildings.

I don’t really know why this is, but I would reason that it might have to do with structural engineering. Most of the lands in Wan Chai were landfilled. There are also a huge networks of tunnels connecting all kinds of MTR lines underneath the downtown area. So it may be more economical and structurally sound to just build the car parks upstairs instead of downstairs. Thus creating these rather uncommon sights.

The 警輪 Police Launch No 51 rushes briskly by at the 沙田海 Sha Tin Hoi in Hong Kong outside SML Universe HKG. I love these ships. I have always wanted to get the model boats when I was little but my parents deemed model boats to not be “educational” enough so I don’t get to play with them. My mom said me that if I want a model boat I should make one from scratch from wood. Although I did do a lot of things which she asked me, I never figured out how to make a boat from scratch so I never did.

The main reason we picked 山東省 Shandong Province as our first destination to travel to for the “中國旅遊 中国旅游 China Tourism” project was to visit the 孔府 Confucius Mansion.

# 孔府 (Kǒng fǔ) [1]

孔府 (Confucius Mansion / Kǒng fǔ) , also known as 聖公府 (shèng gōng fǔ), is located in 曲阜市 Qufu City in the 山東省 Shandong Province of 中國 China. It is the residence mansion of the Confucius family.

The 孔府 Confucius Mansion, the 孔廟 Confucius Temple, and the 孔林 Confucius Cemetery [2] are collectively known as the 「三孔」“three Confucius”. They are part of China’s key protected cultural relics, and is listed as part of the World Cultural Heritage in December 1994.

The two characters “聖府” (圣府 “Holy House” Shèng fǔ) were written on the 匾額 (匾额 “plaque”) [3]. It was written by 嚴嵩 (严嵩 Yan Song [4]) from the 明朝 (Ming Dynasty) [5].

An Asian waterbird found a piece of trash floating on Tolo Harbour for a brief rest during the stormy weather in Hong Kong.

These birds are currently being protected by the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) as well as the WWF.

I saw a lot of them last year outside my window and had thought that they were seagulls, but a Swedish friend on Facebook corrected me on this. I had no idea that they are so rare.

This is an extreme crop because while I tried many times to photograph them on the sea level, I could not and so I photographed this one from the 27th floor.

Hopefully I will see more of these later this year.

The aerial view makes for some truly spectacular photography. Now with the new 1.4x extended, I can really get close to the action. People photographed this way will always be anonymous, so it should relieve some of the pain I had when photographing humans, meanwhile the perspective is quite wonderful from this perspective.
