Stairs are awesome—especially as a stereographic panorama, as I have found. Maybe Escher had the foresight. This one was created using 360Pano, an freely available iOS + Android app.

Peter Zummo (born 1948) is an American composer and musician. He plays the trombone, valve trombone, euphonium, synthesizer, other electronic instruments, and also sings. His music is associated with the postminimalist and Downtown aesthetics.

He holds a PhD in ethnomusicology, a B.A. degree (with honors) in music (1970) and an M.A. degree in music (1975), all from Wesleyan University. He has studied with Carmine Caruso, Roswell Rudd, Stuart Dempster, James Fulkerson, Dick Griffin, Makanda Ken McIntyre, and Sam Rivers.

In his playing, Zummo frequently uses the circular breathing technique, which allows him to extend drones for a long period of time. He is a core member of New York City's DownTown Ensemble and has performed and/or recorded with John Lurie's Lounge Lizards, Daniel Goode, Arthur Russell, and Guy Klucevsek.

About the photograph

Technically "wrong" but oh so satisfying portrait...

This is what happens when there's no light, no tripod and not allowed to strobe! The photograph was taken with Canon EOS 10D with the Canon 24-70 f2.8L, f/2.8, 1/60 sec, ISO 3200 so I have to get creative on how to develop the photo...

Arthurs Landing is a group of musicians, all of whom worked at various times in various contexts with the late Arthur Russell, a cellist and composer from Iowa who lived on the Lower East Side for most of the later part of his too-short life. Russell brought together the worlds of dance, pop, and folk with that of downtowns new music, and fused Western and Eastern musical traditions, driven by his engagement with Buddhist thought and practice. He collaborated often with Allen Ginsberg, and Phillip Glass was also an early mentor. Characteristic of Russell's method was his tendency to work hard and long, and he rarely considered anything finished. What was his unending pursuit of the ineffable becomes a challenge and inspiration for the Arthurs Landing ensemble. It is hard to resist the ambition and humor behind compositions with titles like Temple of Meaning, Terrace of Intelligibility, and Hop on Down to Petland. Russell is the focus of the feature-length 2008 documentary directed by Matt Wolf, Wild Combination. A biography by Tim Lawrence, Hold Onto Your Dreams, is due out this year.

The Arthurs Landing ensemble will perform pop songs and parts of a longer instrumental work called Singing Tractors and will be available following the performance to answer questions about Russells life and work.

Since this was my favorite look of all, I tried to do live-action panorama again with the 100-400, so you can see the detail as well as the construction. Stitched together using 6 captures on the 6D live. Just look at those shoes. Truly. I am thinking that I would go find a shoemaker and cut out holes for me also. Crazyisgood. SML Love.

I have always wanted to photograph men in flight, and I considered photographing dancers—but it seems that even though football is played mostly on the ground, there are plenty of opportunities when the human forms is in mid air.

Pictured is Marti Rosell [1] (Hong Kong Falcon Football Club #3)’s soft landing after he has headed the ball.

You see why I don’t do studio photography? Try asking the model to pose like that—impossible. Some forms just need to be natural, and you can’t beat live action sports.

I couldn’t find Paulita’s information on the web so I cannot identify their players on the field.

13th annual D.U.M.B.O. Art Under the Bridge Festival® (Sept 25 to Sept 27, 2009)

www.dumboartfestival.org/press_release.html

The three-day multi-site neighborhood-wide event is a one-of-a-kind art happening: where serendipity meets the haphazard and where the unpredictable, spontaneous and downright weird thrive. The now teenage D.U.M.B.O. Art Under the Bridge Festival® presents touchable, accessible, and interactive art, on a scale that makes it the nation's largest urban forum for experimental art.

Art Under the Bridge is an opportunity for young artists to use any medium imaginable to create temporary projects on-the-spot everywhere and anywhere, completely transforming the Dumbo section of Brooklyn, New York, into a vibrant platform for self-expression. In addition to the 80+ projects throughout the historical post-industrial waterfront span, visitors can tour local artists' studios or check out the indoor video_dumbo, a non-stop program of cutting-edge video art from New York City and around the world.

The Dumbo Arts Center (DAC) has been the exclusive producer of the D.U.M.B.O Art Under the Bridge Festival® since 1997. DAC is a big impact, small non-profit, that in addition to its year-round gallery exhibitions, is committed to preserving Dumbo as a site in New York City where emerging visual artists can experiment in the public domain, while having unprecedented freedom and access to normally off-limit locations.

The beauty of utilitarian forms continues. This is the view down under the MTR (Hong Kong’s metro) bridge at Heng On station in Ma On Shan. The only way to photograph this in its entirety is via panoramic photography because there is simply no lens this wide.

Often photographs don’t work because everything feels very “framed”. Here the pedestrians are on the either side of this extreme FOV which leads the eye out of the frame, and I think that photographs which do these are generally more successful.

This panorama is stitched using 16 5184 x 3456 RAW images and resulting in a 10916 x 4411 image which spans 179-degree field of view (FOV) horizontally and 79-degree FOV vertically.

You can use a fisheye, I guess, but you will still be limited by resolution. Not to mention that fish eye lenses will distort the image and I prefer vertical lines because straight lines.

Stitched using Hugin 2012’s Panini projection.

With the recent success doing handheld pano with Hugin 2012, I tried my hands at some handheld vertical panorama today.

This was taken on the path which I take to walk to the Ma On Shan Promenade. The buildings on the top right is 聽濤雅苑 Vista Paradiso, where SML Universe HKG is. The architectural complex to the left is 錦豐苑 Kam Fung Court—a series of public housing estates in Hong Kong. The forms you see in the middle is a primary school, as you should no doubt recognise by now from my photography of schools. The mountain in the background is 馬鞍山 Ma On Shan. And that’s not an airplane in the sky, it was a bird in the midst of flight.

This is a stitch of 12 RAW captures stitched together using the Trans Mercator projection so the buildings are not straight as it should, but it is the best projection I have tried out which would tile this well without losing too much materials in the process.

So the Hover Bar kept on getting better. I have now found it to be most useful in controlling music surface. Here shown again with Griid Pro and the Ableton Live set of Orphion Ping Pong on the Dell U2711 monitor.

The great thing about the arm is that I can position it where my left hand rests way out from the desk. No more holding the 1.5 lb iPad 3 with two hands. Now this is how controllers should be. It is also useful with other music apps I own. Vibration is still an issue but otherwise I do recommend it.

This is working so well that I am thinking of having monitor arms for all my monitors now.

Photographed with iPhone 5, processed in Snapseed on the iPad.

Skyscrapers and reflections are fun—especially through a layer of glass with dotted patterns. I don’t really know the reason for it—maybe it shields heat better this way? I will ask an architect and get back to you on that. For now I am just glad that the camera has enough resolution to not turn all that into a moire mess.

Todd Lehman – Artist Statement

Nineteenth-century English critic Walter Pater said that all art aspires to be music. More recently, in a ''New York Times'' interview, Spanish painter Antoni Tapies said, "One should compare modern art to music." Who can argue with that? Abstract painting then is about visual noise and energy-and about the beauty of silence-all of which are certainly related to music.

While I sometimes work on large canvases, I prefer the hard surface of paper and often collage newspaper or various handmade papers, including rice papers, into a painting. Tools? Brushes, of course, but also a variety of scraping and scratching tools.

What inspires my paintings? Two things-landscape and architecture. Well, maybe three things. The energy of New York City is inescapable. We New Yorkers are addicted to the visual noise and drive of the city, but for obvious reasons we relish moments of solitude and meditation. So my paintings are sometimes like a raucous traffic jam, other times like the quiet of a leaf falling in a Japanese garden. They are the pages of a visual autobiography.

My favorite look of the bunch. The backpack holds a display, I believe—crazyisgood!

Previously I have mistaken some mini yachting activities as windsurfing. I stand corrected. But this is windsurfing for sure.

My lens is not long enough so it is cropped. I also noticed that since the 70-400 f/4L I have is the non-IS edition, it does have some limits on this far end.

So I have ordered the 100-400 f/5.6L IS today. Oddly the reseller said that they do not have a lot of stock so I have to wait, but hopefully soon!

Thank you for Your Visit, Have a Nice Day is a performance piece by Agata Olek (Facebook / Flickr / Portfolio) created for Art in Odd Places:SIGN, an annual festival exploring the odd, ordinary and ingenious in the spectacle of daily life.

Curated by Erin Donnelly and Radhika Subramaniam

Director of AIOP: Ed Woodham

Artist Statement

"Inspired by a uniformed attendant holding the sign Hold the Handrail in a Taipei metro station, I've created this moving installation/performance piece. In wearable sculptures of multicolored crocheted camouflage, my performers appear in various sites on 14th Street, displaying photographs of signs I've collected from different countries that are in emphatic, ironic or amused dialogue with their location."

Wufenpu (五分埔) is the largest clothing market in Taipei, best known for its wholesale pricing. It is most suitable for ladies who enjoy bargain shopping. I had no interest in that, but instead gravitated to the little food vendors seen here selling knock-off versions of Taiwanese specialties, such as the fried chicken steak in the front. In the background, another Buddhist temple appears rather unexpectedly in the midst of all the chaos.

Finding perfection in life is going to be very difficult, but the imperfection adds to its interest, I think. If I wanted a perfect leaf, I could have just drawn it. But try drawing imperfection. It is very hard. I am imperfect. The leaf is imperfect. It feels closer to heart. Like the leaf which is imperfect, I find my own imperfection adds to my overall interest. If people are perfect life would be very boring, I think.

It seems that sports photography is definitely the 7D’s forte. So I think that I just might go and photograph some action at real matches soon.

Pictured is a guy shooting a hoop at a basketball court nearby. His identity is concealed because of the bokeh. The hoop in focus is located at the basketball court right next to his.

Identity concealed = no model release necessary. Excellent.

Restaurants which steam dim sum to order usually have their menu as a booklet or in the form of a piece of paper ‘點心紙’ (literally dim sum paper) so customers can pick items and quantities as desired.

Unusual characteristics of this particular designs are:

+ Multiple choice quantities checkbox

+ Computerized check sheet that can be fed into some kind of scanner to read out the input

Definitely one of my favorites from today's veggie shoot at the farmers market at Union Square.

This is my short stack. Mostly stuff that I have alraedy read but need quick access to.

When I saw the Sapien Bookcase (2003) by Bruno Rainaldi at DesignWithinReach I gotta have it because this is exactly how I always do: stack books!

Sometimes when I photograph physically large things they appear to be microscopic images. This is one of those times. It is the ceiling covering an outdoor escalator in Central, Hong Kong. But it appears almost like some kind of tank tracks in a sci-fi movie. Abstract forms are interesting that way—a single image tinkles the mind for millions of possibilities. I think that this might be why I also have a preference for abstract paintings which evoke emotions and energy.

Over-complication is a human fallacy. So when I photograph anything, I try to maintain focus and make sure that every form in the frame matters and contributes something to the capture. If it does not belong then I make sure that they are not included.

For photographs which there is no time to think (live action), I just shoot and then crop after the fact. But for things which stay put I take my time to compose before clicking the shutter.

In digital photography, cropping means lose of resolution and detail, so it is best to do it right at the moment of capture then trying to fix things in Photoshop after the fact. Photoshop is not magic, you know. The best Photoshop jobs do not look like it was ever Photoshopped. And I am not a one of those wizards who can wield magic. So I try to do it right where I can.

I kept on seeing this boat from my apartment up above peering down and now I have spotted the same boat at eye level.

The word 海鮮 in Chinese means seafood, but it is in fact made up with two characters: 海 is sea and 鮮 is fresh. Thus you can see that seafood according to the Chinese must be eaten fresh. This is why when you go to Chinese restaurants you will see a lot of fish tanks. Simply put, dead seafood is nasty.

I have no idea what is in its nets but those look like squids to me. Oh yummy!

Yin and Yang motifs seen at an open air plaza in Wan Chai, Hong Kong. Unlike Western modernist architectural forms in the Bauhaus tradition which are heavily driven by orthogonal forms, curves play a big part in connecting elements together in China to create flows which echo with the humanistic qualities better than straight lines.

A collage of forms, accented by the echoes of colors and lines.

The afternoon sun casts a warm shadow of a baby carriage on the footbridge. Below the bridge, a man in blue sweater walks casually across a zebra crossing. The lines of the zebra crossing is shielded by the bridge, thus it would appear as if the man is on the same plane when in fact is is very far away. The S in “SLOW” is obscured so you see the word “LOW” instead. The white markings not the road leads the eye to the lower right as well as the upper right, which is the entrance to a car park, where the yellow warning signs echo nicely with the warm glow of the afternoon sun.

This is the site of a (con)temporary sculpture park that is currently on view at the construction site where Museum M+ was to be built.

Titled “Mobile M+ Inflation” or “M+流行充氣” in Chinese, it features multiple inflated art installations by a roster of international artists including Cao Fei (China), Choi Jeong Hwa (South Korea), Jeremy Deller (UK), Jiakun Architects (China), Paul McCarthy (USA), Tomás Saraceno (Argentina) and Tam Wai Ping (Hong Kong).

The site was unfortunately closed due to the Hong Kong’s very unpredictable weather when I visited but I am planning to revisit on another day.

As a bonus, there will be a special performance titled “Audio Lotus” by architect-artist duo Eskyiu and sound artist Wong Chung-fai this coming Sunday (2013-05-12) at 3pm. It is a walking sound sculpture which is inspired by Benoît Maubrey’s “Audio Peacock” and Choi Jeong-Hwa's "Emptiness of Form. Form is Emptiness.".

Visit 藝游西九 WKCD Events Facebook Page www.facebook.com/WKCDevents for more information.

I was made aware of this mostly thanks to Billy Clarke — a highly talented writer who seems to know everything about what is going on in Hong Kong — SML Thank You!

Unlike mainland China, bicycles are not considered a primary form of transportation. But bicycle lanes are everywhere in Ma On Shan, and people do ride it everywhere. Cycling is a good form of exercise.

In Hong Kong, you can ride along the 3.2 km long Ma On Shan promenade spanning an area of 5.2 hectares (sometimes pictured in my “Serenity” series) while enjoying the beautiful scenery of the Tolo Harbor and Sha Tin Hoi.

I don’t exercise much these days so I might get a bike to do it. Of interest: although the promenade itself is a smoke-free zone, ashtrays are provided along the cycling lane. I don’t think that I have ever biked and smoked before. There will always be a first time, I suppose.

“DJ Rainbow Teddy mixing his next hit after Madonna called” #CCBY #Crazyisgood

Bert+Ernie are no longer with me. They stayed behind in New York along with 95% of my other friends. But I took rainbow bear with me. It was given to me by a dear friend. So toy stories from now on will be about mostly Rainbow Teddy.

I remembered what my mom says when she saw Rainbow Teddy. She says: “有冇搞錯呀?!” Which literally means “did you get it wrong?” Or rather most appropriately mean in modern language WTF?!

Well, evidently Teddy doesn't give a ___ about my mom’s comment either because he is working on a new single right now. But he won’t tell me what it is because when Teddy is busy he hates it when someone disturbs his “flow”—which SML totally “gets”. :)

DJ Rainbow Teddy was handmade with love in Vermont in the US by Vermont Teddy Bear in case you are wondering. Here photographed with his mastering headphones AKG K701 and the Denon X800.

A bizarre sighting during sunset yesterday. Dark smokes appear in the middle of nowhere towards the brocade cloudy sky.

It is good then perhaps that I am not a religious fanatic, otherwise I would see this as a sign that something dark is coming.

That said, nature has a way of talking to me all the time. Maybe it is a sign. You decide.

# SML Translate: 日落雲錦現髒霧
