I was wrong—it seems that you do still need a pano head even with modern technology.

Previously I made the opinion that modern software should be able to stitch these images shot using normal pan heads [1] and that the pano head is mostly a luxury items. But when I actually worked on the image it appears that I was very wrong about it.

As you see here the seams a highly problematic at the near end of the lens. The far end is always going got be ok, but he near end poses challenge for Hugin it would appear.

SML Apologies—but I never said that I am always right.

This 360-degree pano is stitched using 24 full-resoltion 7D RAW files. Trust that when I get a pano head I will revisit this.

“從中國飲食文化看商業巿場 From Chinese food culture to marketing” #opinions #biz

1. Available only in Hong Kong, Dreyer’s “New York style blueberry cheesecake” cannot be found in New York.

2. Available only in the US, the fortune cookies—vanilla crisps containing Chinese sayings laden with typo and lucky numbers—are not available in China.

3, 4. Chinatown Brasserie is my favorite Chinese restaurants in New York. Just don’t order the “Chef Specialties” as there is nothing Chinese about it.

What is going on here is a case of marketing. Dreyer’s packaging said that New York is famed for their cheesecake, so ice cream sells better. Americans don’t necessarily enjoy the subtle taste of Chinese cuisine, so if you reinvent 咭嚕肉 (sweet and sour pork) in 20 variations and you get instant hits à la “chef specialties”.

What you are buying is not culture but marketing. Want to learn about Chinese food, travel to China or if in Chinatown Brasserie, order food from the “traditional Chinese dim sum” section. Joe Ng (CB’s chef) is a dim sum wizard and I recommend it highly as long as you order from the authentic section.

This happens to me daily when I woke up after the MacBookAir has had it's sleep. I don’t really know why it does this. What’s going on here:

1. The Dell U2711 is attached to the 2012 MacBookAir via Apple’s HK$780 active miniDP to dual-link DVI cable. After MBA has had its sleep cycle, I will get these “snow” when powering on. Powering the monitor off and then on solved this issue. But it is annoying. Does this happen to anyone else?

2. Whenever the MBA goes to sleep, the LaCie 3TB USB 3.0 Porsche Design P’9233 Desktop Hard Drive will also go to sleep. But when the MBA wakes up, the LaCie hard drive would register later than most, and then the error message “the disk was not ejected properly”.

The trouble is that when that happens, the disk is also improperly de registered, and so all my bookmarks on the sidebar relating to this disk would also disappear, which is very annoying. Further, the drives will often come back on in a different name in the shell, and the only way to get them back into the same name is to restart the computer.

The SSD makes rebooting quick and painless, but this is still a clear user experience fail to me. Forcing me to do power cycles on the monitor daily when it should have worked perfectly without this glitch would seem to be the normal user flow to me.

These gigantic letters “LHA” which identify the ship can be seen on the hull of the USS Peleliu.

The ship’s structural metal beams create an interesting contrast with the extruded letterings. Visually they bear similarities to the Hollywood sign echoed by some beam lights as seen in the animated identity of 20th Century Fox. It is probably just a coincidence but it is interesting to me nonetheless.

So what are LHAs exactly? According to the United States Navy, an LHA is the largest of all amphibious warfare ships. It resembles a small aircraft carrier and is capable of Vertical/Short Take-Off and Landing (V/STOL), Short Take-Off Vertical Landing (STOVL), Vertical Take-Off and Landing (VTOL) tilt-rotor and Rotary Wing (RW) aircraft operations [1, 2].

The view from inside the 纜車 缆车 cable car going up the summit. Space is very tight on our way up so I took this using the G12. I typically travel with four cameras: Canon EOS 7D, Canon G12, iPad, iPhone — and now also the Canon EOS M.

The Canon G12 supports RAW so it allows greater flexibility even though it is housed inside a point-and-shoot casing. The EOS M I have found to be good at taking video shots but so far its focusing has been very slow so I would likely continue to bring my G12 with me on future travels.

I get annoyed sometimes with the reflection from the window, but sometimes those reflection makes more interesting natural contrast of forms with the scene which I do like.

“鼎香鎖愛情” (鼎香锁爱情 Ding, Incense, Locks and Love)

As previously posted, red ribbons with locks were seen all over the 碧霞祠 Azure Clouds Temple (1). Here at another temple also at 泰山 Mount Tai, the locks were affixed to a 鼎 Ding (2). According to locals, Chinese couples visit temples before they get married. Their names are crapted onto each individual lock and a ritual is performed by the monks to bind their love to eternity.

These are lamp posts situated around the Olympic Park. See how similar they look to the observation tower they are building? I have a feeling that the observation tower is somewhat inspired by the designs of these lighting fixtures. They could also have been built by the same people—which I am unsure.

The little dotted lines in the background are Chinese kites being flown near the park.

If I could paint, this is what would be on my canvas. But I can’t paint, so I paint through photography. Since I publish everything via Creative Commons (CCBY), in the past some people would turn my photographs into paintings. Maybe some day someone would do that for my “paintings”. Meanwhile I will continue to paint my abstract paintings using my camera.

David Schnell

The landscape painting of David Schnell reflects the manifestations of a nature, which is getting undercut by our direct, urban surrounding. Thereby architectural pieces capture more or less dominantly the image area of the landscapes. David Schnell uses places such as the cultivated landscape around Leipzig, his domicile and place of study as master student of Prof. Arno Rink, as sources of motive for his pictures.

Within his contemplations of landscape the artist does not evoke real moments of memory. He rather shows an abstract nature which lies beyond any recognizable or concrete experiences. This abstraction manifests itself in the pictorial dissolving of architectural structures and wavering, partly competing vanishing points. Alienating, dissolving, decomposing and subsequent connecting are signs of the artists processual way of working. There are also visual contents which are formed just out of pixels and barcodes. The fluttery status is additionally pointed out by the colouring of the pictures, which ranges from monochrome displays up to prism like light refractions.

The pictures by David Schnell awake the impression of constant speed and destabilisation, which finally also questions the own sense of time.

A Mercedes-Benz sped by a bus stop outside a public housing development in Hong Kong. These architectural designs with supremely clean lines appear to be a mainstay in these newer properties. Open air corridors appear to be an energy-saving feature which is seen in both public housing old as well as new.

Built in the 15th year of emperor Wanli (1587), the Soul Tower (明樓) is the symbol of the tomb. The structure and materials are similar to those of Yongling (永陵). It is an architecture with a hipped gable roof with brick arches inside. All the components, such as corbel brackets, tie-beams and eave-rafters are made of stone, with color paintings on the surface. Thus it looks exactly like a wooden structure. Inside the tower stands a stele which bears the inscription “the mausoleum of Emperor Shenzong of Great Ming” (神宗顯皇帝之陵).

Photographed with the Canon EOS 6D + Canon EF 24-70 f/2.8L USM. Situations like this makes me regret not putting the 17-40 on the camera. But it was so dusty and I did not want to change the lens out in the open…

中国山东省泰安市泰山青云洞

”Green cloud cave” at Taishan Mountain in Tai'an City, Shandong Province, China

位於泰山象鼻峰的東邊,洞頂巨石上寫有“青雲洞”三個大字。相傳青雲洞陰雨天時,洞內若冒青煙與白雲洞之煙雲相遇就會遍雨天下。

Located in Taishan 象鼻峰 (literally means “top of the elephant nose mountain”) to the east, the three characters “青雲洞” (literally means “Green Cloud Cave”) were written on the top of the cave boulder. According to legend, when the the green fogs inside the cave meets with the cloud, then it will be a rainy day.

The Silence of Maria, 2010

God's Enigmatic Silence.

Sometimes you want to shout so badly.

You want a reply, a shout to match your own.

Not from anyone, but from God himself, the Creator.

We want Him to offer us a hand.

He keeps His enigmatic silence.

And then the fear creeps in.

You can defeat the fear by practicing the same enigmatic silence, the silence of God.

Silent people are Godlike.

They are often accused of the sin of pride.

Even more often they get institutionalized in various sorts of hospitals.

"The Silence of Maria" is a series of 9 works based on the Gospel according to St. Matthew. (2:14-15, The Flight To Egypt)
