With no markings on the facade, anyone who lives in Hong Kong would recognise this as a school because of its very defined design pattern.
Renaissance College, Hong Kong (Chinese: 啓新書院, abbreviated: RCHK) is a private independent international school in Ma On Shan, Hong Kong, serving primary and secondary students [1].
The term “design patterns” is mostly attributed to Christopher Alexander, an Austrian born American architect who published a book called “A Pattern Language: Towns, Buildings, Construction” [2] where it discusses visual language used in designs as common vocabulary.
The book has far-reaching implications as the same term is now used today to discuss software designs, as popularised by “The Gang of Four” in their book “Design Patterns” to discuss reusable object-oriented software engineering [3].

Thank you for Your Visit, Have a Nice Day is a performance piece by Agata Olek (Facebook / Flickr / Portfolio) created for Art in Odd Places:SIGN, an annual festival exploring the odd, ordinary and ingenious in the spectacle of daily life.
Curated by Erin Donnelly and Radhika Subramaniam
Director of AIOP: Ed Woodham
Artist Statement
"Inspired by a uniformed attendant holding the sign Hold the Handrail in a Taipei metro station, I've created this moving installation/performance piece. In wearable sculptures of multicolored crocheted camouflage, my performers appear in various sites on 14th Street, displaying photographs of signs I've collected from different countries that are in emphatic, ironic or amused dialogue with their location."

The rush hour metro traffic in Hong Kong. World Bank recorded the population in Hong Kong to be around 7 million in 2011. Now in 2013 it is trending towards 8 million.
Someone commented on SML Facebook that it is interesting to see that the platforms in Hong Kong have an inner door. Aside from keeping the A/C inside, they serve a safety function also—keeping the crowd from falling into to the tracks.
Rush hour in Hong Kong is so crowdy that often you wait in line for multiple trains to come before you can get on the train. Thankfully, MTR in Hong Kong are always on time and very efficient. Usually the trains are only 2 minutes apart—likely timed to be the shortest possible time for safety.
I am claustrophobic so you can see why I don’t live in downtown urban area. It is so crowdy that no one has the bandwidth for all the mobile devices either.

Tai Wai Station is an interchange station on the East Rail Line and the Ma On Shan Line of the Mass Transit Railway (MTR) system in Hong Kong. The station was originally opened in 1983 as an intermediate station of East Rail Line. In 2001, the station underwent expansion and construction ended in September 2004. The new concourse part was opened at first in the same month. Since 21 December 2004, the station has served as the terminus of the Ma On Shan Line, as well as the interchange station between these two lines. [1].
Pictured is the super long escalator which leads passengers from the ground station level to the platform. To cope with large amount of passenger traffic, most escalators go up only, and the exit going down are usually in the forms of staircases.
I usually try to leave photographs in colors when they work. Black and white photography does have its charms, but sometimes the colors add quite a bit.

Hundreds of protestors rally outside the Central Government Offices of Hong Kong yesterday, blowing whistles and shouting to support Edward Snowden, the NSA whistleblower who revealed to the public about the PRISM electronic surveillance program employed by the United States.
Visit gigapan.com/gigapans/132481 to see every individual faces in detail interactively.
# Workflow
I wish to show both the protestors in detail as well as the amount of public media surrounding them, so using my Canon EOS 6D affixed with the EF 100-400 f/4.5-5.6L IS USM and photographed handheld at 400 mm.
All in all, 73 RAW images were stitched together inside Autopano Giga 3.0 and output as Photoshop Large Document Format (PSB). Inside Photoshop I then create a vector mask to remove the edges. Since this was shot handheld, it was fairly difficult for me to make sure that I have had all the shots which I wanted.
I have been thinking of getting a robotic panoramic head for a while now but have not made a final decision between Gigapan EPIC Pro vs the Kolor Panogear. Both are fairly expensive. The other option I looked at as the Manfrotto pano head but since it was almost the same price as the robotic heads I thought that it makes more sense to go with robotics.

Central Plaza (中環廣場) is a 78-storey, 374 m (1,227 ft) skyscraper completed in August 1995. Unlike what the name may have suggested, it is not located in Central by Wan Chai (灣仔), and is currently the third tallest architecture in Hong Kong after ICC and IFC [1, 2].
Designed by Dennis Lau & Ng Chun Man Architects & Engineers (HK) Ltd, the building was design to be in triangular shape in order to allow 20% more office area to enjoy the harbour view as compared with a square or rectangular shaped buildings.
As with the HKCEC next door (pictured at the lower left corner), the Central Plaza was built on reclaimed land. And as you can see, even more construction is taking place in the land in front of it—though exactly what is unclear at this point.
Stitched using 15 full resolution RAW captures with the 6D and 100-400 in order to achieve a high enough resolution for the building as well as minimise geometric distortions.

Most of the non-L lenses from Canon is pretty bad, but the 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM is one exception. As a prime lens, its sharpness is second to none. The large aperture makes it perfect for portrait shooting. Its ability to focus at 0.38 m distance makes it great for macro photography. All these and it is super light. So I am taking it with me on the EOS M for a run around town tonight.
In this particular config it does look kind of phallic though :)
Photographed with the iPhone 5, processed in Snapseed.

The Clock Tower (尖沙咀鐘樓) in Tsim Sha Tsui, also known as Former Kowloon-Canton Railway Clock Tower (前九廣鐵路鐘樓) is the only remaining artifact from the original site of the former Kowloon Station on the Kowloon-Canton Railway (KCR, now bought by MTR). Built out of red bricks and granite, the Clock Tower stands 44m tall and is situated right next to the Hong Kong Cultural Centre [1].
I photographed this mainly to see if it was actually possible to use the 100-400 at night, and amazingly it was with the 6D—seriously crazyisgood. The IS on this lens is quite powerful as the exposure was 400mm, 1/80 sec, f/5.6 at ISO 12800. For lenses without IS shooting at 1/80 sec at 400mm would be impossible.
Very soon in the future not a single human would understand the concept of a “fast lens” vs a “slow glass” as technology advances.

Pano photography is always challenging to crop because often you will need to decide which parts are more interesting and which part can be taken out because the rendered image is often not in rectangular form. As usual, processing the same image in black and white afforded much more room for creative freedom.

## Black and white
+ Opened color layered file into Photoshop
+ Adjust Black and White via manual colour filters
+ Apply resulting image with a small amount (~20%) of large-radius USM and set layer to Soft Light (I use this technique a lot to give some “clarity” to the image without over-sharpening things)
+ Import back into Lightroom 4 and use Manual Distortion to “wrap” image further in order to extract more bits in the originally pano’d photo which was in an arch

Part 3 of 3
Then I do the same for the water area. Note that at this point this image is very similar to by 0EV capture—no surprises there. This was what I saw when I photographed this photo. I do HDR not for effect, but just so that I can have some details on the shadow area.
At this point you see that really there is not much color to this scene. In fact, they stand to distract the overall image, so I removed it. Here since I have been working in Lab mode I just quickly removed the color channels or just removed the color saturation. If I work with images filled with color I usually would use the channel mixer in RGB mode or use the black and white tweaking modules inside Lightroom. But as you can see there is not much color in this image to start with so I can simply just remove the color saturation.
After importing back into Lightroom, I tweak things further as I feel that I can still get some more details in the shadow area. If I were inside Photoshop I would do a image-wide shadows/highlights tweak but since Lightroom version 4 there is this new Clarity parameter which works very well in manipulating local contrast so I used it.
And that’s it. But remember, every single image is different. This is not a recipes. There are no rules. Now go have some fun!
Cheers.

I went to the Ma On Shan Promenade originally to photograph birds, but I couldn’t find any. Instead, crew teams from the City University of Hong Kong (CityU 香港城市大學) were seen rowing a variety of boats in Tolo Harbour.
Some of their tshirts said STGRC but I could not find anything under those designator, but my guess is that it is some kind of rowing club name in Hong Kong as that name does show up on PDF documents on the Hong Kong, China Rowing Association (中國香港賽艇協會) server [1].

I have had shark’s fins many times now but I have never had 斑翅 garoupa fins. The two should not really be compared as they are technically different, but part of the it has the texture of shark’s fins which is quite wonderful.
Pictured is how the dish is served at 翠亨邨 Tsui Hang Village, a cantonese restaurant at the 香港中環新世界大廈 New World Tower in Central, Hong Kong.
The braised garoupa fins come with the tail of the garoupa. Served with Chinese cabbage in a sweet succulent sauce. Super yum. Highly recommended.

Almost all buildings at the PolyU campus features red brick facades with very geometric compositions. I have passed by it many times but this is the first time I have been inside, and it was actually a lot nicer than I had expected.
Although the buildings officially have a name (usually in reference to their donors), they are usually referenced by students and their staff via their “core” name—a letter from the English alphabet for speedy way finding.
Pictured is the intersection between two buildings: Anita Chan Lai Ling Building (陳麗玲樓 Core P) and the Pao Yue-Kong Library (包玉剛圖書館 Core L).

An onlooker checks out a super long banner with the words: “Defend Democratic Values 真正「愛港者」桿衛民主價值” when protestors march on to the Consulate General of the United States from Chater Garden in Central, Hong Kong.
The Chinese sentence reads: the true lovers of Hong Kong would uphold the value of democracy.
(this pano is stitched with seven 7D RAW captures with the 100-400. As usual, I prefer to shoot panoramas so I can get the necessary resolution otherwise lost with a 17-40 + 6D, for example. The seams of the banner is not perfect as this is a time-variable shot. Also this is my first pano shot for photojournalism)

These tongue-in-cheek paintings by Indian artist Paribartana Mohanty would put a smile on any Mac cultist’s face. Titled “Different Jobs,” they feature Apple’s founder Steve Jobs working in different professions—that of a shoemaker in this case. Will Steve Jobs be as well known should he choose to pursue the field of shoemaking in India? Is that an Indian Jobs?
Seriously WTF. Crazyisgood. SML Love.
(I am not particularly drawn to this style of painting, though it feels like that they are referencing the traditional portrait painting for royals in India. That said, perhaps my Indian friends can appreciate this better than I do.)
P.S. This is the first artist shown at Art Basel who has a Vimeo account!

Exactly what are the differences between Canon EF 50mm f/1.2L, Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 and Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 lenses besides the difference in pricing, someone on Facebook asked.
Quite a bit. When I do any kind of shopping, I perform extensive research. And I can see the differences regarding performances among these lenses. I also asked the opinions of my peers who have worked with these lenses.
The number 1 criticism cited by photographers regarding the 50 f/1.8 II is the poor construction. Note that people have problem mostly with the Mark II but not the Mark I. So if you have the Mark I then this criticism does not apply.
The other main difference, as can be seen pictured here which comes directly from the Canon EF Lens Book III is the lens elements configuration. Generally speaking the L series contains aspherical lens elements which makes their images superior to others. As one photographer once said to me, although for the consumer line of lenses you often have to pump the saturation quite a bit, when shooing with the L lens you often need to dial the saturation down.
I have worked with both lines of lenses and I can speak to this fact.
Basically you don’t need expensive lenses if you are willing to work on the photo after the fact, which you should anyways, but working with good input does usually save time and effort in postproduction aka processing workflow.

Eee-eee-aww-aww eee-eee-aww-aww… That was what it sounded like against some tribal beats blasted out from the heavily amplified speakers. These aboriginal tribes painted with patterns and colors could be seen playing their didgeridoos all day long near the pier which was frequented by both locals and tourists.
For the week that I stayed in Sydney, this was most of the music I heard when I walked out the door. It was hypnotically delicious.
Photographed with the Canon EOS 6D + Canon EF 24-70 f/2.8L at the Rocks in Sydney, Australia.

Perhaps because of the efficiency of the public transportation system, e-commerce in Hong Kong is not popular – but it more than makes up for it in its category-specific shopping malls.
––
Once infamous for pirated software but today considered one of the cheapest places in Hong Kong (if not the world) to get (or buy parts to build) a personal computer, the Golden Shopping Centre is a prominent IT shopping center. Golden Shopping Center Shops has extensive lines computer products from components like motherboards, RAM, and CPUs, complete systems, to various peripherals. Unlike purely consumer-oriented IT shopping centers, Golden features several stores specializing in professional and esoteric network equipment.
The Golden Shopping Centre is also known for the number of video game stores it contains, where people purchase gaming systems, software and accessories at either a slightly discounted price, or in special in-store packages which might include an extra game or extra accessories. Since the halls are extremely narrow, it is often very congested, especially on weekends. The mall has two floors. The upper floor, Golden Computer Centre (Chinese: 高登電腦中心), mainly sells games and gaming software, while the lower floor, Golden Computer Arcade (Chinese: 黃金電腦商場), focuses on the sales of computer-oriented hardware. They were originally fashion markets named "Golden Shopping Centre" and "Golden Shopping Arcade" respectively.
It was the first computer market in Hong Kong and today "Golden" (高登/黃金) is synonymous to "computer market" in the minds of Hong Kong people even though many other similar computer arcades have been established today.
At first the strings seem mostly decorative.

An artist work at his paintings on the street during the 13th Annual Art Under the Bridge Festival organized by the Dumbo Arts Center in New York City.
13th annual D.U.M.B.O. Art Under the Bridge Festival® (Sept 25 to Sept 27, 2009)
www.dumboartfestival.org/press_release.html
The three-day multi-site neighborhood-wide event is a one-of-a-kind art happening: where serendipity meets the haphazard and where the unpredictable, spontaneous and downright weird thrive. The now teenage D.U.M.B.O. Art Under the Bridge Festival® presents touchable, accessible, and interactive art, on a scale that makes it the nation's largest urban forum for experimental art.
Art Under the Bridge is an opportunity for young artists to use any medium imaginable to create temporary projects on-the-spot everywhere and anywhere, completely transforming the Dumbo section of Brooklyn, New York, into a vibrant platform for self-expression. In addition to the 80+ projects throughout the historical post-industrial waterfront span, visitors can tour local artists' studios or check out the indoor video_dumbo, a non-stop program of cutting-edge video art from New York City and around the world.
The Dumbo Arts Center (DAC) has been the exclusive producer of the D.U.M.B.O Art Under the Bridge Festival® since 1997. DAC is a big impact, small non-profit, that in addition to its year-round gallery exhibitions, is committed to preserving Dumbo as a site in New York City where emerging visual artists can experiment in the public domain, while having unprecedented freedom and access to normally off-limit locations.

Rainbow Teddy (RT) does his best to maintain balance between Moleskines and travel guides on the Sapien bookcases to help SML test out some newly purchased umbrellas on Taobao.
# Background story
SML used to be able to buy umbrellas from B&H fairly easy. Frankly, umbrellas are not that difficult to make. You can fetch a good brand like the Elinchrom 41" for US$43, or get the most economical (and poorly built) Impact 45" for as low as US$14.95. But when SML went to Tin Cheung in Hong Kong, the salesperson wanted HK$800 (~US$100) for the Elinchrom 41". Are you kidding me? No way.
So SML went to TMall and found an umbrella for 25 RMB (~US$4) and voila [1]. Sure the quality is not as silky smooth as the Elinchrom but to be frank it was actually better than the US$15 Impact from B&H. So all in all SML is very happy with this purchase, and will definitely go onto Taobao for more goodies in the future.

Everything is a blur on a foggy day like this. Amazingly I have already tried expanding the dynamic range a bit with curves, but it still takes quite some effort to extract some details. If you have a sharp eye, you will find two ships sailing amidst the serene waters. The color is so muted that they appear almost like color noise—and they do. But there is something comforting about this blue gray hue, so I kept it.
In Chinese traditional painting, landscape is called 山水. 山 means mountains. 水 means water. Together they mean landscape—as it appears that those are the two key ingredients which makes up a Chinese landscape. Which this should be one. The ships is the 人氣 life force—another necessary ingredient in Chinese painting. No matter how tiny, they add a bit of life to the overall composition. Thus this is me trying to do Chinese painting, through photography.

Leaving the clothes outside the window to air-dry is a Chinese specialty. I didn’t use to think much of it until I have traveled the world and noticed that no one else does this except people in Hong Kong.
So many people does this that metal racks are often built in on the building itself. If the building does not come with a rack to hang anything, people in Hong Kong will hack their way out to crate racks themselves.
Pictured here is the facade of a public housing development in Hong Kong. You can see that several households have decided to create their own outdoor structures. Drying clothes outside the window requires some skills though—it is easy to lose clothes this way, and clearly one of the towels (or tshirt?) has fallen to the floor below.
These outside hanging racks are not unique to public housing either, they are seen everywhere. In more affluent neighbourhoods the racks are usually installed outside of the maids’ quarters.

You either love it or you hate it, but one thing is clear—it is impossible to not notice Chinese artist 岳敏君 Yue Minjun’s works, which depict men frozen in laughters.
The large sculpture in the foreground is part of a series titled “The Tao of Laughter,” which was previously on view in Hong Kong at Harbour City in 2012. They were inspired by Chinese traditional philosophical text 道德經 Tao Te Ching [1] written by 老子 Laozi, which supports the power of laughter as a path to inner peace.
Yue is commonly associated with the “Cynical Realism” by art critics. The painting in the background can be seen earlier in the stream [2].

1. The Tao Te Ching, Daodejing, or Dao De Jing (道德經: 道 dào "way"; 德 dé "virtue"; 經 jīng "classic" or "text") also simply referred to as the 老子 Laozi, is a Chinese classic text. According to tradition, it was written around the 6th century BC by the sage Laozi (or Lao Tzu, "Old Master"), a record-keeper at the Zhou Dynasty court, by whose name the text is known in China.

Dried seafood goods are called 海味, which literally means the “flavor of the sea”. In particular, 鮑 (鮑魚 abalone), 參 (海參 sea cucumber), 翅 (魚翅 shark’s fin) and 肚 (魚肚/花膠 fish maw) are collectively referred to as the the “Big Four Flavor of the Sea” (四大海味). Other common seafood items that can be dried include fish, shrimp, smelt, Aberdeen, scallops, dried squids, fish maw, mussels, razor clams, works and oysters.
Pictured is a diversity of items being sold by street vendors at the Lau Fau Shan Fish Market in Hong Kong (香港流浮山魚市場).

Diana Eng presented the Fairytale Fashion Collection in a technology fashion show on Wed., February 24, 7PM, at Eyebeam. Models hit the runway while an orchestra of circuit bending DJ’s create music from hacked video game consoles.
The Fairytale Fashion Collection uses technology to create magical clothing in real life. Electronics, mechanical engineering, and mathematics are used to create clothing with blooming flowers, changing colors and transforming shapes. Research and development for the Fairytale Fashion collection are shared online at FairytaleFashion.org as an educational tool that teaches about science, math, and technology through fashion. Fairytale Fashion was created with the support of Eyebeam Art and Technology Center, the leading not-for-profit art and technology center in the United States.
Diana Eng is a fashion designer who specializes in technology, math, and science. Her designs range from inflatable clothing to fashions inspired by mechanical engineering. She is a designer from Bravo’s Emmy nominated TV show, Project Runway season 2 and author of Fashion Geek: Clothes, Accessories, Tech. Diana is cofounder of NYC Resistor hacker group. An international roster of photojournalists stood by at the footbridge crossing Garden Road between Cheung Kong Centre and Bank of China Tower waiting for the rally to go underneath them.
Every time I go do photojournalism I would notice people trying to get a spot in the front. Actually the best vantage point is not down there—it’s up there. Grab a telephoto lens and start shooting.

If you are willing to look, interesting forms are everywhere. This look like an art installation to me, but is just marks left on the road. The text is cropped from an upside down “SLOW”, situated next to some road signs. But it is beautiful to my eye. I love seeing typography in the wild—whether they were intended as typography or not. It says something to me.

“Smoking Lounge”, SML Universe, Hong Kong
I am posting this to let you know that I am _well aware_ of the danger of smoking and how it would affect me. Despite this I _choose_ to do it. So no need to tell me why you think it’s not good for my health. I know so.
The only thing that I am not too happy with is that I can't get natural cigarettes in Hong Kong. In New York I used to smoke Nat Sherman's and when I moved to DUMBO I had to switch to American Spirit. While I know that “natural cigarettes” are not healthier – I think that it is at least a little bit better than commercial cigarettes which has 1,300 chemical additives.
Also, I am annoyed with Hong Kong's 19 cigarette rule because previously I was able to buy the good Davidoff at the Hong Kong airport because the tobacco leaves are better. Now I am stuck with smoking either Dunhill or Davidoff International – lesser quality leaves. I am going to see if I can get a carton and just declare taxes the next time I fly out because this is super annoying – it's not that I want to avoid taxes. I simply want a better product.
Recently I heard that a lot of designers in Hong Kong apparently roll their own so I will have to go seek out some local tobacco shop I suppose. I don't think that I would have the capacity to roll 20 cigarettes a day though! :)

A bizarre triangular configuration landed in Tolo Harbour tonight. I saw it in the dark and had no idea what it was, so I mounted the camera on a tripod and did a long exposure to see if I can make out what it is, but I cannot.
And this is what the “Bulb” mode is for. To do it though you need to use the Canon TC-80N3 timer remote control. Yes, you can do it by hand but if you do bulb by hand then you risk vibrating the capture.
Again, you see the lens flair sparkles, yes? These are results of small aperture captures. To do photography well you do need to know how the machines function and how to achieve everything you need. And so you learn by trying new things. Do things manually. Everything is manual here: exposure, ISO, focus (when it is dark like this you can’t rely on anything automatic). And when you do things manually it is always so much more fun!

The one thing I noticed from photographing this game is that there really aren’t many captures which contain the ball and the guy. As soon as something of interest is happening, the ball is already fast gone. I feel that it is somewhat important to actually see the ball in the frame so I picked to process this.
This is Luca Marinelli (HKF Number 16). He is the defender for the team and is originally from Varese, Italy [1].
I photograph this across the width of a standard soccer pitch, so this lens is definitely a keeper for sports photography. I would have preferred to get the frame rate of the 7D but this was at night and only the 6D had the usable 12800 ISO, which this is shot at. No Noise Reduction is applied. Like I said, very usable.
