Easter Sunday 2020, mid-town. #3

An Easter we will not forget

Ever since this by the amazing kelli jane , love her every picture, I've been wanting to take a picture of Hope with a vintage camera. I've been looking on ebay and at antique stores but just haven't committed to buying one. Then I thought how about Daddy's old camera. When we started dating he was actually the one into photography, I'll have to post some of those pictures one day :) You'll probably be seeing this one around a lot more, I love it! Although I only got a couple shots because little miss quickly noticed she wasn't really taking pictures and wanted to trade with me:)

The one on the right was inspired by kristina kiessig posting this and this, I wanted to unfocus too! :)

Oh, one more little thing, I didn't notice that peeking eye until I uploaded to the computer and I was smitten with it, it's the little things isn't it?

Since Iris is the Greek goddess for the Messenger of Love, her sacred flower is considered the symbol of communication and messages.

Therefore the flower iris in the language of flowers symbolises eloquence.

A purple iris is symbolic of wisdom and compliments.

A blue iris symbolises faith and hope.

A yellow iris symbolises passion while white iris symbolises purity.

As you can see, the gift of iris can be used to convey many emotions.

Dutch irises are hybrids of two older varieties, giving it a look all its own.

The distinctive ‘fleur-de-lis' flowers come in a variety of blues, yellows, purples, and white.

Organic, sensual, all about shape and colour.

The Iris is just born elegance... extremely ephemeral, they barely last a few days, yet with unbelievable beauty and style.

Best to leave them in the garden... like so many of the bulbs!

Wishing you a colourful day and thanks for commenting, always appreciated, M, (*_*)

It's been quite a while since I last took a photo for my 100 strangers project so today I ventured into the city determined to find that special face. I spent some time wandering around and did see quite a few potential subjects but the right opportunity to introduce myself didn't occur. I spotted Marjellyn with her shopping bags finishing her lunch. I sat next to her and explained the project and asked if she would be willing to pose for me. She happily agreed and we moved to a quieter area of the square. I took a bit more time with Marjellyn and managed to get quite a few photos that I was pleased with. I selected this one as it shows the interesting tattoo on her shoulder.

Marjellyn was very patient whilst I snapped away and asked her a few questions about herself. Marjellyn is 22 years old and works as a nursing assistant in one of the large hospitals in the city, she was in the city to meet her sister and do some shopping. Thank you Marjellyn for helping me today and I hope you like the photos.

This picture is #19 in my 100 strangers project. Find out more about the project and see pictures taken by other photographers at the 100 Strangers Flickr Group page

Since I saw Willie's picture from his iphone, I knew I had to go ASAP, the flowers probably passed prime time.

This day was only day I could get out of work earlier, but the weather didn't cooperate. No clouds could be seen from Santa Cruz coast, satellite was clear whole day. I debated to myself weather I should start heading down to big sur or not ...

Here is what I got that day. Sometimes we have to trust our own intuition.

Side notes to James: you should have gone with me ...

Happy Spring Break, everyone!

Since last summer, RhB is operating a new peak hours shuttle service between Zernez / Susch and Scuol-Tarasp, offering a connection to the RE trains Landquart - St. Moritz in Order to serve the touristic and administrative center of Scuol half-hourly. As the rail infrastructure is not ready for that half-hourly service, the new service is operated by postbuses under "EV" tag ("Ersatzverkehr" or "Rail replacement service") although there is no information about if and when the new service can be operated by trains actually. The first morning service on workdays arrives Susch at 5:27, the bus is seen here waiting for the connecting train just arrived before heading back for Scuol. The vehicle will serve as ski shuttle bus in Scoul later on that day.

I have listened to "Now and Then" quite a lot since it's release and had the thought that i'd heard the phrase before (maybe more than once) in a Beatles song.

Anyhow, long story short, it popped.. so i looked the Lyric up, to be certain.

Then Irony.. "Help" it was, Ai "help" was needed to produce the song.. "Now and Then" the lyrics seem prophetic or maybe just coincidental, you decide.

I need somebody

(Help) not just anybody

(Help) you know I need someone, help

So much younger than today

(I never need) I never needed anybody's help in any way

(Now) but now these days are gone (these days are gone)

I'm not so self assured

(And now I find) now I find I've changed my mind

And opened up the doors

Help me if you can, I'm feeling down

And I do appreciate you being 'round

Help me get my feet back on the ground

Won't you please, please help me

In oh so many ways

(My independ-) my independence seems to vanish in the haze

(But) but every now and then (NOW AND THEN)

I feel so insecure

(I know that I) I know that I just need you like

I've never done before

Help me if you can, I'm feeling down

And I do appreciate you being 'round

Help me get my feet back on the ground

Won't you please, please help me

When I was younger, so much younger than today

I never needed anybody's help in any way

(Now) but now these days are gone (these days are gone)

I'm not so self assured

(And now I find) now I find I've changed my mind

And opened up the doors

Help me if you can, I'm feeling down

And I do appreciate you being 'round

Help me get my feet back on the ground

Won't you please, please help me, help me, help me, ooh

Since time immemorial, ´cairns´ have graced our landscape. They crop up as piled-up stones; small towers as handy anchor points for lost hikers. They have a spiritual significance in various cultures. Above all in Japan they are seen as ceremonial or sacred places for reflection. Standing before the balancing stones, the individual acknowledges being at the mercy of nature and quietly whispers his wishes to it. In Ostend Rosa Barba has anchored such an outsized cairn. She imitates the stones by casting concrete in textile: a technique that promises flexibility for the architects and designers of tomorrow. The textile makes one think of the form of sandbags, with which Barba creates a type of imaginary barrier against the future rise in the sea level.

Each stone symbolises a city whose fate is threatened by climate change. Buenos Aires, Bangkok, Rio de Janeiro, Miami, Jakarta en Chennai are represented by a stone whose size corresponds to the number of people who live there. The position of each city in the tower reflects the actual altitude of the place, and shows the relation to the steadily rising sea level. For example, Amsterdam already lies two metres below the current sea level. The title references the poetess Emily Dickinson. The sight of the sea struck her dumb, literally robbing her of her words. At the same time it calls up an impossible image of a plundering of the sea, which belongs to no one.

Over the years Pillage of the Sea will gradually be submerged by the water. The sculpture forms a visual yardstick for climate change, while the ebb and flow of the tides determine how much of the artwork is visible at any given moment. With this work Rosa Barba reminds us to acknowledge our vulnerability and to revere nature.

Beauty is a reflection of divine bliss and, since God is Truth, the reflection of His bliss will be that mixture of happiness and truth which is to be found in all beauty.

Forms allow of a direct, 'plastic' assimilation of the truths - or of the realities - of the spirit. The geometry of the symbol is steeped in beauty, which in its turn and in its own way is also a symbol. The perfect form is that in which truth is incarnate in the rigour of the symbolical formulation and in the purity and intelligence of the style.

Beauty mirrors happiness and truth. Without the element of 'happiness' there remains only bare form - geometrical, rhythmical or other - and without the element of 'truth' there remains only a wholly subjective enjoyment or, it might be said, luxury. Beauty stands between abstract form and blind pleasure, or rather so combines them as to imbue veridical form with pleasure and veridical pleasure with form.

Beauty is a crystallization of some aspect of universal joy; it is something limitless expressed by means of a limit.

Beauty is in one sense always more than it gives, but in another sense it always gives more than it is. In the first sense the essence shows as appearance; in the second the appearance communicates the essence.

Beauty is always beyond compare; no perfect beauty is more beautiful than another perfect beauty. One may prefer this beauty to that, but this is a matter of personal affinity or of complementary relationship and not of pure aesthetics. Human beauty, for instance, can be found in each of the major races, yet normally a man prefers some type of beauty in his own race rather than in another; inversely, sometimes affinities between qualitative and universal human types show themselves to be stronger than racial affinities.

Like every other kind of beauty artistic beauty is objective, and so can be discovered by intelligence, not by "taste". Taste is indeed legitimate, but only to the same extent as individual peculiarities are legitimate, that is, just in so far as these peculiarities translate positive aspects of some human norm.

Different tastes should be derived from pure aesthetic and should be of equal validity, just as are the different ways in which the eye sees things. Myopia and blindness are certainly not different ways of seeing - they are merely defects of vision.

In beauty man ’realizes’, passively in his perception and externally in his production of it, that which he should himself 'be' after an active or inward fashion.

When man surrounds himself with the ineptitudes of an art that has gone astray how can he still 'see' what he should 'be'? He runs the risk of 'being' what he 'sees' and assimilating the errors suggested by the erroneous forms among which he lives.

Modern satanism is manifested, no doubt in a very external way but in the most directly tangible way and in the way which makes the greatest inroads, in the unintelligible ugliness of forms. 'Abstracted' people, who never 'see' things, none the less allow themselves to be influenced in their general mental outlook by the forms around them to which they sometimes, with astonishing superficiality, deny all importance, just as though traditional civilizations did not unanimously proclaim the contrary. In this connection the spiritual aesthetics of some of the great contemplatives will be recalled as evidence that, even in a world of normal forms, the sense of the beautiful may acquire a special spiritual importance.

So yeah, it's been five years since I first put together the feet. Although she has been finished for about a year now, I just never got around to taking pictures.

I wouldn't be surprised if there were more illegal connections than legal, and I'm not entirely kidding when I say that. As a result, and also due to her size and unstable foot design, posing her was somewhat challenging. And when I say "somewhat" I mean "very." I also realized while taking pictures that I wish I could make the entire lower legs orange to look like knee-high boots, to go with the elbow-length "gloves." Unfortunately, I don't have the parts/they don't exist in orange. Maybe even just the HF armor on the shin could look good in orange. Pretty happy with her over all, though, especially given how long it took and how much of a pain it was. I almost feel like an era of my life is over now that I've finally uploaded pictures of her.

With her finished, I don't have any significant WIPs sitting around anymore, so I'm not exactly sure when I'll get something new built. Might have to give it a few more years. Maybe once I'm out of college and my location is a bit more permanent. Or I'll surprise myself and throw something together over winter break. I don't know anymore.

Since there is still freezing rain falling outside, I took out my marbles and took some reverse macro images of them. I think they turned out pretty neat, the colors remind me of a water color painting in a way.

Since the ancient carnival times, the habit of wearing masks and costumes has given birth to a flourishing trade, with specialized artisans producing more and more extravagant and sophisticated masks. Among the most famous and diffused costumes, especially in the 17th century, the so-called baùta consisted of a particular white mask under a black hat and a black cloak. It was even used outside the carnival period to court someone anonymously.

Women, instead, frequently wore a costume called moretta, consisting of a dark velvet mask that was held in place by a button in the mouth. Since the wearer was unable to speak, this mask was also called moretta muta, meaning mute.

Costumes and masks are still the major attraction of the carnival, and Venice becomes the stage of a unique endless parade of traditional 18th century-style masks as well as more original and modern varieties.

Visitors are conquered by their charm, and they usually buy a mask as soon as they get in the city, so as to fully feel part of the festival. You can easily get one for even a few euros in any of the small stands or shops that have colonized each corner of the streets. However, in the city center, ancient shops or ateliers still produce masks according to the ancient art. Here, papier-mâché and ribbons have not been replaced by plastic, and each product is a true masterpiece, created with patience and attention to details.

Pittsburgh has adapted since the collapse of its century-long steel and electronics industries. The region has shifted to high technology, robotics, health care, nuclear engineering, tourism, biomedical technology, finance, education, and services. Annual payroll of the region's technology industries, when taken in aggregate, exceeded $10.8 billion in 2007, and in 2010 there were 1,600 technology companies. A National Bureau of Economic Research 2014 report named Pittsburgh the second-best U.S. city for intergenerational economic mobility or the American Dream. Reflecting the citywide shift from industry to technology, former factories have been renovated as modern office space. Google has research and technology offices in a refurbished 1918–1998 Nabisco factory, a complex known as Bakery Square. Some of the factory's original equipment, such as a large dough mixer, were left standing in homage to the site's industrial roots. Pittsburgh's transition from its industrial heritage has earned it praise as "the poster child for managing industrial transition". Other major cities in the northeast and mid-west have increasingly borrowed from Pittsburgh's model in order to renew their industries and economic base.

Pittsburgh is the poster child for managing industrial transition.

The largest employer in the city is the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, with 48,000 employees. All hospitals, outpatient clinics, and doctor's office positions combine for 116,000 jobs, approximately 10% of the jobs in the region. An analyst recently observed of the city's medical sector: "That's both more jobs and a higher share of the region's total employment than the steel industry represented in the 1970s."

Since the memorable day when Sethi disappeared and only showed up again after more than 24 hours he seems to have become an outdoor junkie. His former fear of the big outdoors is gone and we have no idea where he spends most of the day. Sometimes his brother Ramses finds him and they return home together, sometimes he comes home alone because he is hungry. This photo was taken in my garden. Sethi is my sister's cat and although he doesn't live far away from me he doesn't visit my garden very often, unlike his brother Ramses who comes by almost every day. Unfortunately Sethi tends to take the opposite direction when he leaves his own garden which isn't good because there is a road and on the other side of the road are the railroad tracks.

Sabetha Kansas. There is a Chinese restaurant in this space now

I've been fiddling with tube stereo since the early 1990s, and I think this system is as musically satisfying as any other I've ever pulled together.

It’s also the least expensive by far, so I thought I'd write it up. You can get a good taste of what modern tube audio sounds like with this system. The amp and speakers cost $350, and you'd be hard put to find a more natural, lyrical system for chamber music at four times that price. A system with deeper bass? Yes. A system that plays louder? Assuredly. But a system that better conveys the beauty of a performance? I can't think of one.

This little stereo is pure magic on vocals, and it’s 90% of what I'd ever want for jazz, folk, piano and chamber music. It’s great with percussion -- lots of kick!

It sounds more than decent on orchestral music and rock at modest volumes. The little APPJ N3 amp has three tubes and produces only 3.5 watts per channel. It’s tiny, yet it makes classic, water-clear, nineties-style tube audio.

I'm using it at my desk with the speakers about one meter from my ears. In this situation, the amp is called on to produce a fraction of a watt to play as loud as I want to play it. Thus, 3.5 watts is more than enough. With the speakers shown above it can produce ~95 dB SPL at 1 meter, far louder than I want.

The speaker is a four-inch (105mm) Fostex Kanspea kit from Madisound. It took less than an hour to assemble both speakers, so it’s only nominally a kit. Anyone with an icepick and a screwdriver can put them together. (I’ve heard that selling it as a nearly-completed kit lessens import duties, so that may be why it’s marketed in this fashion).

One rather special driver (Fostex FF105QWK) per channel covers the entire audio range from ~80Hz to 20kHz. Fresh out of the box, it sounds pretty sibilant, but once the speaker has played for 100 hours or so, the sound is remarkably sweet and coherent. (I left it playing all day in a room with the door closed for several days to burn it in.)

Despite the missing tweeter, there’s plenty of well-rendered treble response. In fact, I swapped out the stock Shuguang EL-84 tubes because the treble was a little too hot. The cabinet is a simple bass reflex design. Apart from the driver, the materials are nothing special, a 9mm fiberboard box with a wood-grain vinyl finish, cheap connectors and no speaker grill.

I've listened to a lot of fancy stereos over the years, including a few in the $100,000 range (which were not mine, obviously). This little system punches well above its price class. To my ear, it’s more musical – more listenable – than our big system downstairs, though it lacks that system’s extended bass and ability to play orchestral works at concert-hall levels.

On the downside, the system is mercilessly revealing when there are recording defects. That's not necessarily a bad thing, because that kind of system also reveals the details in good recordings with great delicacy and accuracy. My favorite badly done recording of a good song is Cyndi Lauper’s “True Colors”. It'll make your ears bleed on this system. Also, if you use Bluetooth or play MP3s you'll likely hear the compression artifacts.

It deserves a good turntable or CD-or-better quality digital sources. Give it good source material and it'll bring tears to your eyes.

Sometimes thinking about preservation and heritage of the city is not enough.

First time back since ‘85.

Another month since my last upload... anyway, here's one of my latest additions to my doll collection: Tiana from The Princess And The Frog! She's last year's edition, but as you can see I customized her to my liking, I seriously couldn't stand the dress being so boring and plain. I also gave her side-bangs since she had this really weird (in my opinion...) curl in her forehead. And now, at last I can call my Disney Princess collection complete! :-)

This is a truly historic car, since it is a 1916 Dodge Brothers.

This car was purchased second-hand by the grandfather of the family who owns the service station where I wear my own car to be repaired or serviced.

Grandfather Cristofor "Toful" worked on him throughout his life and at the free time that allowed his work as a mechanic, but still failed to finish.

Very old, he was 94 years old, did promise his son Carles, good friend, that he would continue his work and finish the restoration.

When shortly after "Toful" died, his son Carles continued to work for several years looking for original parts, manufacturing other at hand, ordering the wheel spokes to the carpenter, upholstery, gadgets and tiny pieces that had to buy in the United States, since in Spain there was nothing.

Nobody has told me, I've lived and I've been with him when he pressed nuts, checking valves, etc, etc,. Inside me, I never believed he would end, as I had never seen assembled and did not even know how it looks once finished.

Then one day about four years ago, phoned me and told me

Miquel, I have finished and as you're a photographer, I want you to do a few shots .-

And this is the result of one of them.

Not seen in the photograph, but instead of the luggage compartment, opening the cover there is another seat for two people.

Perhaps this picture is one that has me more thrilled to do it. And my friend Carles, when he saw, he burst into tears. Today, this photo (in a size of 50 x 70 cm) hangs in the reception of the workshop and is the pride of the whole family.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Since winter is more or less gone in my area, this is the last winter pic from 2017.

Since some folders have recently been asking me how to get permission to teach Shuzo Fujimoto’s models at origami conventions, I approached his heirs and asked if they could grant a blanket permission to everyone in order to make getting permission more convenient. They agreed, and his son, Hitoshi Fujimoto, sent me the following statement in an e-mail on 2024-06-16:

> As you suggest, my sister and I would like to give blanket permission

> to any origami folder who would like to use my father's work.

>(Non-profit activities ONLY)

>

> I am sure my father, Shuzo would be pleased if this would make his work known

> to as many people as possible.

Therefore, if you want to teach Shuzo Fujimoto’s models at an origami convention, feel free to do so without having to explicitly ask. Please also honor the heirs’ wish and do ask for permission in case of commercial use.

I hope this permission will benefit the origami community and help make Shuzo Fujimoto’s work even more widely known.

Since, I like to go out before sunrise, I often run into wildlife in very marginal light.

But, hey! its digital, not film, so, why not try to get a shot.

While not the greatest, I took this at 8:13am and sunrise was at 8:41am.

Then, it takes about another 30 minutes for the sun to peek over the mountains.

So, still very dark out.

But, the Little Female showed up and posed pretty.

So, I tried to get the shot.

1/6 of a second! Yeah! it worked.

That time.

Never would have tried that back when I was using film.

My good friend (Yes, I do have a couple!) used to say "dollar, dollar, dollar" when he would hear my camera clicking away.

Then, I switched to digital and told him, "not any more".

So, I guess if I can see it, I'll try and get the shot.

I do have to delete a lot of soft fuzzy shots, but, sometimes you do get lucky.

Is Flickr dying on its arse? Since the takeover by SmugMug a while back, it seems to me that it's taken a big dip in popularity. Of course, it could just be that people are fed up with my pics.... after 7 and a half years of regularly posting pics, I'm probably bringing nothing new to the party!

I'm thinking of ditching Flickr and moving over to Instagram. Those of you that have Instagram too... how does it compare?
