One week after devastating earthquake which hit Wenchuan County in Sichuan Province leaving at least 70.000 people dead. At 2:28 pm citizens observe a silent tribute to those who have been killed. Drivers were honking their horns for three minutes to honor the victims. National flag was lowered to half-mast in Tiananmen Square..
3-day national mourning has been announced and all public amusements(cinemas, theaters, bars) have been suspended. Wearing “I Love China” T-shirts people gathered in many parts of the city lightening candles, singing and shouting slogans like “Rebuild Sichuan!” , “Come on China!”.
I joined a group of about 300 people who gathered for candlelight at the riverbank.
The same day we got the news that another magnitude 7-8 quake is likely to happen. That again caused panic among the people. This time it was an official government statement. There was no reason to not believe in what we heard. Those with cars left their homes heading south. Others were fluttering around trying to buy whatever they could. Water, bread, biscuits, chocolate…
I bought a beer and a pack of M&M's...
Thousands slept outside again. Luckily it didn’t rain.
June 6, 2010. 23 years since last starting my 1969-model Yamaha AS2 (125cc twin) I rode her to the 10th International Classic Motorcycle Show at Knebworth House in Hertfordshire, UK. The 80km round trip went flawlessly, and the bike behaved impeccably. The only frustration was having to keep revs at (or below) 5,000 RPM as I need to run-in the new pistons and rings. The bike clearly wants to be revved and will then deliver! Loved it :-) After the show I took the country lanes back home and just to the north of Welwyn Garden City, in Hertfordshire, I stopped at the magnificent 475m Welwyn Viaduct (also called Digswell Viaduct) that was opened by Queen Victoria in 1850. This is a great slice of bucolic England!
Ever since my mom brought this book home I've been wanting to read it, just haven't found time to give it my full attention. So I'm slowly getting through a book that should probably only take a weekend.
I can't wait to see the movie once it's out - although as it always goes, I'm sure the book is better than the movie...
since all the other restaurants are closed we tried this one, it was lovely...everything was...the food drinks and service..
Since removed from the site. Some of the rails in the complex appear to have been lifted. There hasn't been any traffic for some years.

Finally picked this up on Amazon, been a long time since I've seen it. (My first screen credit...!)
David Mamet's 1987 directorial debut was this mesmerizing study of control and seduction between two kinds of detached observers: a gambler who is also a con artist, and a psychotherapist who is also an emerging pop-psych guru in the book market. The latter (played by Lindsay Crouse) meets the former (Joe Mantegna) when one of her clients is driven to despair from his debts to the card shark. Mantegna's character agrees to drop the IOUs in exchange for Crouse's attention at the seedy House of Games in Seattle, a mecca for con men to talk shop and hustle unsuspecting customers. The shrink gets so caught up in the arcane rules and world view of her guide over subsequent days that she observes--with no false rapture--various stings in progress inside and outside the club. Mamet's story finally becomes a fascinating study of two people protecting and extending their respective cosmologies the way rival predators fight for the same piece of turf. The psychological challenge is compelling; so is the stylized dialogue, with its pattern of pauses and hiccups and humming meter. Mostly shooting at night, Mamet also gave Seattle a different look from previous filmmakers, turning its familiar puddles into concentrations of liquid neon and poisonous noir. --Tom Keogh
Pulitzer Prize–winning playwright and screenwriter David Mamet first sat in the director’s chair for this sly, merciless thriller, one of the most original and acclaimed films of the eighties. Mamet’s witty tale of a therapist and best-selling author (Lindsay Crouse) who must confront her own obsessions when she meets an attractive cardsharp (Joe Mantegna) is as psychologically acute as it is full of twists and turns, a rich character study told with the cold calculation of a career criminal.

Well, I haven't uploaded in a few weeks since I've been very busy lately, however, I figured I would start my first new upload of 2025 off with a bang.
Southern California doesn't see very many new Albertsons Cos. store openings (although I am holding on hope we'll see more in the next few years), and the last new Albertsons Cos. store opening was the new Sherman Oaks Pavilions back in 2021, a replacement for a previous small Pavilions. Today, I decided since this doesn't happen very often, I would make the drive to see the first new Vons in nearly a decade on its grand opening day. The land site of this new store sits on a former Kmart, which it's no longer existent building was demolished and it's foundation ripped out of the ground in order to make way for construction of a brand sparkling new Vons. This new Vons replaces a smaller older Vons in the same shopping center, which I have posted before.
According to liquor licenses, it appears this Vons now has a new store number, 3431, replacing the store number 1672 of the previous store.
This Vons was very busy for its grand opening. It is very interesting to see a Vons opened with an Albertsons layout. It looks completely different from any Vons in existence since it is the only one so far that has opened under their ownership. The open ceilings makes this Vons feel much larger and open than most stores. It also has a walk in beer cooler which is an Albertsons feature. I have never seen in a Vons before.
This store does not have a pharmacy, and I think Albertsons likely didn't add a pharmacy because the CVS in the center has pharmaceutical rights for the whole center. An expanded beer/wine/liquor department takes the space where a pharmacy and health department would normally be located in today's Albertsons new-builds, with the walk in beer cooler likely being the space where a pharmacy would be. I speculate potentially the store being designed so a pharmacy could be added in the future with a walk in beer cooler taking that space for now.
I believe in early designs of this store there were meant to be two entrances, one main entrance, and one entrance where the pharmacy would be, or in this stores case, the liquor department. However, designs changed at some point so now that entrance is a drive up order entrance.
I imagine the Vons Express being constructed with this store will open in the coming months. It is still under construction, but looks like it could wrap up very soon.
Overall beautiful store. I hope there are more to come in the future.
It's been some time since my last update on house sigils, mainly due to my hard drive crashing on my computer!! This is a new set I have been working on recently. House Brax Sigil - A Purple Unicorn on Silver Sworn to House Lannister After watching the awesome Game of Thrones series I became slightly obsessed with each of the House's and their identity or sigil. Having found the houses and thier representative sigils. I set about creating a vector for each one of them and creating a poster. I hope you like them as much as I do. www.redbubble.com/people/liquidsouldes/works/8141185-hous... flic.kr/p/aKgqic

Since childhood I like origami. I started sewing a year ago and tried to transform an origami paper purse into a origami fabric purse. It has triangular pockets at the corners and is reversible. Own pattern. Blogged here diariodenaii.blogspot.com.es/2012/08/bolso-origami.html
Since it is another miserable weekend in paradise, I thought I would give you a little insight into how I get some of my shots.
When I first started out with the compact, I really didn't have a clue.....not much as changed some may say :) First off I built a monster of a hide in the forest, I was familiar with the RSPB hides on reserves I had visited in the UK and I built something similar to one of these. I used fallen tree branches, logs etc. Anyhow the whole affair took lots of time, was in the wrong location and created too much shade. But this is where the Black Woodpecker visited. So in the end it was all worth while. I also had the Grey-Headed visit along with Hawfinches. But due to it being within the forest, light was a problem. Even when the sun was shining, trees created shade. Especially when you had a great photo op' only for the one part of the tree the woodpecker was on it was shaded by a nearby tree.
So I changed location, built a much smaller hide, closer to the ground. In fact this one is dug into the ground. It is in a more open area surrounded by smaller trees. So it gets pretty much uninterrupted sunlight throughout the day. That's when the sun does shine, short supply of that this year. I have to constantly change the logs I use for images as I don't want all the same shots/logs etc. At times you will recognise tree branches/logs etc from previous images as I can't be bothered to change them on every visit. The ground is very rocky, so it is a challenge to dig holes, especially so in the winter when the ground is frozen.
I started out with the usual tree stumps. The big problem was first you dig the hole, put in the tree. Later drill holes with the cordless drill and put in fat etc. You get a few good shots, but that's it. Time to change......I feel the smaller branches are the way to go. Easier to replace, then I experimented with this technique, in the picture. It works really well. I will try for more of this type of shot on my next outing, whenever that maybe???
Now I am understanding light, position of the perches in relation to the sun/background, I can create some pretty good shots. It has been a fantastic learning experience. I have learnt a lot regarding "my woodpeckers", well I do say to my wife I am off to feed my babies when leaving the house to the forest :) They will go to lengths, I never thought possible to get to the food, as you can see in the images.
There are the dominant species the cautious ones etc. It is fascinating to watch. A few have taken a shine to the sunflower seeds, others prefer the pork fat (lard) can't get beef fat (proper lard) here. Would love some suet, doesn't exist here in SK. I have to keep the feeders topped up and fat stocks in check. So come rain or shine, - conditions I am out every weekend to feed or if I am fortunate to photograph the birds. So it isn't just another photograph of a woodpecker, quite a bit of work has gone into.
Now that I have improved my editing skills, I can edit out (at times if needed) fat etc that maybe visible in the picture. You normally get a few chances of a shot before they feed. Most of the time they will fly lower down the branch then hop up to the food, stopping on the way. This is when you have the opportunity of a shot.
I know most of you will be fully aware of how I obtain my shots, but for those who may have been wondering. A little insight :)
Again, from the archives, Pezinok, SK.
Since I have no school today, I'm free to pick at the warts on my disfigured foot, which I think are burning off quite nicely!
Since this is a bucket list photo, it is the first picture I worked on when I got home. I had to clean up a lot of back splatter.
Since my wife had to work, I decided to take a walk at Luther Britt Park and I snapped some pictures.
Since countdown for Mothers day has already begun (9th May), Sending mothers day gifts could be a sweet reminder of the love and concern you still hold for your mother.
Since the Canon A640 experiment went so well, I wanted to try a hybrid workflow solution. This time I hauled out a Mamiya RZ, three lenses (65 L-A, 110Z, 180W-N), and Kodak TMax100 (souped in Rodinal 150:1, extreme minimal agitation, 72F, 30mins). Using a Nikon 8000ED film scanner, I'm getting 50mb files, reducing their size and using the Gimp to manipulate these in a straight traditional darkroom style technique.
I used two tints on these digitally scanned film images. My friend Ken Lee's simple Bronze tint sample was used for some of these, and a tint based on a Kerik Kouklis gum over palladium was used on others. The gum over palladium tint is the warmer of the two tints.
Since the water is expected to rise well above the 37 feet we expected we had to hitch a ride to move more things to higher ground.
Since I couldn't play and operate the camera at the same time I used a previously recorded selection.
Since plywood comes in 4x8 sheets, I cut one in half and used that for the floor.
The floor insulation panels went straight onto the concrete and are topped with a 4' x 4' piece of ply wood instead of the chip board used in the walls, to help support the weight of kegs and a human. If I remember correctly, I didn't even bother gluing these parts together.
First clear sky since I don't know when drew me outside in the extreme cold (-17C) to see what this old Fujinon 55mm f1,8 (non EBC version) M42 mount can do with a bit of golden sunlight. Very impressed so far. Definitely performs better in good daylight. It's nicely sharp when the subject is close to the lens, even at wide apertures. The out of focus areas are interesting and the transition pleasingly gradual. It's a bit tricky getting distant subjects sharp or even in focus (struggling with infinity, don't know if this is because of the adapter but it is a bit better stopped down) but this can be used to creative advantage. This has been on my camera more often than any other lens since I picked it up. I paid about 40€ for the lens, it appears to be free of dust, fungus etc and I would be happy getting these results out of something 10x the price.
J. Hudson & Co. ACME Specialist Whistles (since 1870). Birmingham, England, UK.
The original British Admirality Botswain’s Call, Pipe, or Whistle.
Handmade and hand tuned for ease of use. A naval link since 1870. Still made in the original UK workshops and used by Her Most Anglican and British Majesty’s Royal Navy since 1868. Used by navies throughout the world.
“There can be only one!”
The boatswain’s pipe is the “modern day” descendant of the flutes used by the Ancient Greeks and Romans to convey orders to the oarsmen and galley slaves. The first use of the whistle in the English Navy was durin crusades of the 13th Century.
It was during the 17th Century that it took on its current recognizable shape and became known as the “Call” or “Pipe”. Its symbolic importance was further emphasized when the Lord High Admiral of the Fleet wore a gold “Pipe”, called the “Whistle of Honor”, as a badge of rank. The standard officers’ call being made from silver.
The “Call” or “Pipe” is named after the boatswain. He was the officer who, being in charge of the rigging, issued more orders than the other officers. Frequently, the human voice was not sufficient to carry orders to men climbing the rigging, especially in storm conditions. The High pitch of the Boatswain’s “Call” could be relied upon to be heard above even the worst howling gales.
The ship’s crew were trained to respond instinctively to the commands of the “Call”. Instant reactions were essential in times of danger. The speed of the blowing indicated the speed with which the command was to be carried out.
The “Call” is the authentic British Admiralty Boatswain’s Pipe of the ACME (Wile E. Coyote / Road Runner) design. It has been manufactured continuously bh J. Hudson & Co. (Whistles) Limited since the 19th Century. Each part of the “Call” has a nautical name: Hole, Buoy, Keel, Gun, and Shackle.
There are three basic tones one of Her Majesty’s sailors make with a Boatswain’s Call: Plain, Warble, or Trill.
Traditionally, altering have called “Attention by Means” using his “Call”, before delivering a long order, the Boatswain officer would preface his “Long Pipe” with the words, “D’ye Hear There!”
Since April 2011, a couple of Peregrine Falcons have been nesting on the cliffs of Kehoe Beach, Inverness, CA.
In 2013 and 2014, the couple successfully raised 3 chicks.
The three juveniles currently present fledged on June 4th, 42- 46 days after hatching.
On June 14th they were seeing practicing flying maneuvers by the first time, at the beach entrance.
Prey items carried by their parents includes: California and Heermann's Gulls, Oyster Catcher, Red-winged Blackbirds, Mourning Doves and small crustaceans.
Observations by multiple photographers indicates that these falcons are actively hunting, mostly during early morning and late afternoon.
Juveniles seems to enjoy the solid winds and it is common to see them maneuvering the strong breeze.
Special thanks to Phoo Chan, Bill Chen, Warren Lee, Rick Evets and Thy Bun for sharing this great location and anecdotal information about the natural history of these falcons.
It's been a while since in posted one of these. Been going through and cleaning up the camera roll and came across this old edit. #iphonecreation #theprocess
