My gosh my heart is pounding with adremalin rush. It's the first time I have worked on textures with Photoshop Elements 6. First of all I want to say thank you to Karen Ilagan for pointing me to the right direction. I didn't know what the fuss is all about until I've discovered it myself tonight. I've always had PSE in my computer but never really used it. I think I am going to have loads of fun with the new textures. Also thank you Michelle Black for the free textures.

This is high school graduation day for, my granddaughter, Danica. Oddly enough, I just came across this photo buried in my Flickr queue. It is a back to school photo from five years ago when she was just about to begin high school. Now she is done and will be off to university.

It's almost always that I take the less trodden path... and it's almost always as well that I hit serendipity.

A new series begins with this abstract of a garden in Sri Lanka. It is a far-reaching personal journey, happening quite by accident, when I was forced to leave Pakistan in the 1980’s. Where would this unexpected diversion take me?

The word serendipity came to mind at the time and a picture of a little tear-drop island on a world map appeared center stage in my frantic thoughts. The island had been called a wildly exotic name, Ceylon. I was lured there like many before me, seeking unfamiliar beauty and treasures.

Following this trip, my travel destinations began to expose an ancient theme. Unknowingly, I was following ancient trade routes: routes that would lure men looking for adventure and exotic lands and goods to enrich their lives. New scents and tastes drove men to these far away places.

This is my very humble story of how I came to follow the ancients’ roads and routes. I have been agonizing now for several months on how to organize the journey, but finally have concluded that events of serendipity do not lend themselves to such a mundane thought. They just happen as a series of surprises.

The series is called Serendipity and it will be a continual story beginning with this introduction.

.

Even if you think it's a lousy day, go out, explore, be pleasantly surprised.

You can sit for hours and see nothing - then you're out for a sunday stroll and there's one perched close with enough cover to prevent it from seeing you while you fire off a quick burst...

This was the first sunrise of the trip, and it was one of the best.... and I almost didn't wake up for this one! For some reason the sky looked clear when I woke up, and I considered sleeping in, but my friend Bill McIntosh was with me, and his energy and enthusiasm is very contagious, so I forced myself awake and we drove out here.

I don't know what happened, but somehow the clouds must have rolled in as we were driving, because the light was fantastic, and lasted for at least 30-40 minutes. I would have really been upset if I had missed this one!

We found this location almost by chance the night before, while scouting for ideas of where to do the sunrise. I probably have at least a dozen more shots from this area that I can post, some with amazing color, and some like this with a darker mood.

This is my second year of taking photos in the Southwest during monsoon season, and each time has been an incredible experience, I am sure this is an annual tradition now.

When I was moving back to Chicago from New Orleans, my navigation system told me to exit the highway. I did as told and after driving on pretty and winding roads in either Arkansas or Missouri, I came across this. Definitely had to stop and snap a picture. I soon got back on the highway and did manage to hit Chicago at rush hour. But, in my navigation system’s defense, she was British and probably why she was confused.

When friends saw this, a new friend in NOLA said, "That looks like a scene from The Walking Dead. Stay away from the trees. That’s where the zombies are."

An old friend in Illinois said, "Your navigation system knew you like to take photos of old cemeteries. That’s why she brought you there."

I have fascinating friends.

A magical night... We were treated to a spectacular show by the Aurora Borealis at Iceland's Kirkjufell ("church mountain").

This is the very start of it ... when that ribbon of green was only visible to the cameras, and not to our eyes. Grateful, ever so grateful, to have experienced Earth's show that night...

Minimalism exercise. Small piece of walnut fell on my slacks… What was I to do?

It lacks the element of focus I like to have in my work - but it's the only picture I have of that quintessential Key West spectacle: the drag queen with the wind blowing up his skirt. Owing to the auto-"focus" lag, the shutter just missed an angle that was more than I could have comfortably shared with you the viewer.

serendipity

Serendipity is an unplanned fortunate discovery.

Serendipity is a common occurrence throughout the history of product invention and scientific discovery.

Serendipity is also seen as a potential design principle for online activities that would present a wide array of information and viewpoints, rather than just re-enforcing a user's opinion.

... is when you want to shoot a flower and get a hoverfly instead ...

and realize it's the hoverfly your were really looking for

Por increible y absurdo que parezca todo tiene una moraleja, solo falta saber encontrarla.

I typically do not shoot scenics because I am not very good at it. I can make the most beautiful scene look ugly! Yesterday, though, I was walking downstream on the Boise River, shooting macro leaf shots and looking for birds. When I turned around and walked back upstream toward my car, I was confronted with this. I hope you all enjoy it half as much as I did. :)

Serendipity is when you unexpectedly stumble across something good. And that is what happened yesterday when I was out walking on the moors with a friend and a Short-eared Owl popped up in front of us. Short-eared Owls usually breed on the Peak District Moors so I often see them in summer but they are pretty thin on the ground in winter. Most Short-eared Owls leave the higher ground to spend the winter in lowlands, especially around estuarine saltmarshes. Though the BTO Bird Atlas says that birds in the Uists, Orkneys and the Pennines appear to winter close to their breeding grounds, yet I rarely see them in winter. There was a bit of snow on the ground yesterday but not enough to hamper its hunting. We watched it for about five minutes, and it did appear to catch and eat something, then it slowly headed south and out of sight. I did manage some closer shots but I quite liked this one showing the winter moorland habitat.

I was planning on redoing a 365, but I don't have the time do so. In case you don't know, I haven't finished neither a 52 nor a 365 yet. I envy people who are doing 365s, but since I don't have all the time in the world, I'll just do a 52. OK? :)

What is Serendipity?

"Serendipity is looking for a needle in a haystack and finding the Farmer's Daughter." - Julius H. Comroe

Serendipity (noun) ; a natural gift for making useful discoveries quite by accident.

Serendipity is somewhat like fate or destiny I guess. But those words are overused, so I'm using this word, 'cause it's not overused and it sounds more dramatic. Haha!

Teachers are finally showing up! YAY! or maybe NAYYYY!!!

Back to the Smokies. Shot hand held and not HDR. And although certainly not on purpose I do dig the red, white, and blue thing going with this shot. Serendipity for sure!

Thanks to French Kiss for the Serendipity texture in her new collection. I started off to do B & W shell shots and ended up pink!!! I am sure they are all female shells so they won't mind.

The parcel is arrived !!! Thanks so much for your kindness and these beautiful gifts.

With this lovely mousepad, now, I will think about your generosity each time I use my personal computer ! And the smell of the sandal-wood of the fan is an immediate travel in mainland China. I also love the two pandas painted on the fan.
