Remember when Average Joe Railfan's only hope of catching something worthwhile was just by virtue of showing up? I recently lucked into just such a morning of "old-school" railfanning.

With nary a "Heritage Units dot com" report, Facebook sighting, nor other railfan-network-inside-scoop-heads-up, I stumbled across NS 20T running under the abandoned C&NW bridge at Curran, IL, led by Reading heritage SD70ACe 1067. Better to be lucky than good I guess...at first glance, I thought it was a UP leader.

That paint surely needs some touching up, but I figure this unit's next trip to the paint booth will result in a new coat of the black and white...or the scrapper's torch.

We looked out and saw that it was good.

In the early 70’s I was in Yosemite Valley walking in Curry Village. I saw a dignified man standing on the porch of a cabin and realized it was Ansel Adams. He had just given a talk and was selling signed prints of his Yosemite photographs. We talked for a while, and I bought two photos for $25 each. Now, 50 years later, every day when I walk out of my house, I’m met with his powerful, brilliant image of Tenaya Lake. Serendipity happens.

Serendipity is one of the hardest words in the English language to translate. It origin dates back to the 1750s, and the meaning is unplanned, fortunate discovery, or happy accident. I guess it's a better name for a dinghy than Happy Accident.....

Usually my camera isn't drawn towards the homeless ... but John's presence was so visually striking that I just couldn't resist and was compelled to connect ... on any day he could hold your interest with just his intellect alone ... fluid and interesting ... thoughtful and charismatic .... and certainly entertaining .... on any other day he was equally off center and just bat shit crazy ... anyway ... I haven't seen John for quite some time now .... don't know if his demons took more control or if he just moved on .... in any event I do think of him frequently ... there's a fragility and serendipity in the human condition that affects us all really .... and especially in these times, there's a fine line that we all must walk to stay centered and balanced ... it's not always easy to do that ....

i was going to title this scarlet fever, but that is a real disease! lol! i thought i would play with the kyoto colors filter and got this. i focused on the leaves but the exposure missed. i was actually doing a back light with high-key but my error in exposure gave this silhouette image. i thought it also turned out interesting.

this joins the rest of my red shots:

have a great day/night my friends! thanks for all your visits and comments!

My day usually starts when I grab a cup of coffee and my camera and head outside to commune with nature. Sometimes I just enjoy the morning and sometimes I might get a few shots. My hubby was able to join me today and as he followed me outside he saw the hurricane shutters ajar and pushed them firmly to the side. I told him I leave the shutters slightly loose because the tree frogs like to hide in there, you might squash them. As he tried to adjust it back to the way it was a few frogs disturbed by the motion and probably slightly compressed by the shutters hopped out into the grass. Hubby's actions sparked a serendipitous start to the day, for me anyway, tree frog seems to have survived the disturbance too.

This photo was captured on the only rainy day of our vacation. We started our day at the Natural Bridges National Monument in Utah.

Natural Bridges includes three large rock bridges viewable from the roadside but best visited by hiking down into the lower levels of the park. Because it was wet and rainy and the slickrock was, well, slick, we decided to stick to the vicinity of the roadside parking areas and skipped hiking down towards the bridges themselves.

The rain was intermittent but cleared later in the morning and we were even treated to this spectacular rainbow as we drove north into Canyonlands N.P.

Not lost, exactly, but I was aiming to be somewhere else. But after a steep and rough scramble down I decided to try to make something of it. Then the clouds wouldn't cooperate; this was a safety shot taken while waiting for more complete cloud cover. Which eventually came, and wouldn't you know this was the best of the bunch. In fact, probably my favorite of the summer season so far.

An unexpected bonus with the sun rays when we visited this waterfall. There was a good breeze that was blowing spray off the top of the falls, and the low sun angle worked in our favor. Ahhhh, the little surprises that you can stumble upon-- always makes the exploration worthwhile.

I should say that the "nice breeze" made this a two exposure image-- the foliage was really whipping!

Daisy Tree.

Well, there was I messing around with Affinity on the iPad late one evening (should have been tucked up)...

... and I came across the Apply Image filter which I’d not had occasion to use before so I thought I'd give it a try with whatever jpeg I could find on the ‘paddle. I had been working on a double-trunked tree image with some hope of a monochrome, and the image I found was of a shasta daisy that I had published before.

And the combination was really quite interesting, especially in Exclusion blend mode. What fun.

So here it is, with a few extra tweaks but nothing majorly different from the basic Apply Image/Exclusion effect. I guess that the blend mode is doing most of the work here and the filter itself very much depends on the images you choose. Miss Serendipity was her most alluring and generous self.

This is just a quick one for Sliders Sunday then, as I don’t have time for much else today alas. I’ll post the in-camera images linked in the first comment so that you can see where it all started...

Thank you for taking the time to look. I hope you enjoy the image. Happy Sliders Sunday :)

“Una serendipia es un descubrimiento o un hallazgo afortunado e inesperado que se produce cuando se está buscando otra cosa distinta. También puede referirse a la habilidad de un sujeto para reconocer que ha hecho un descubrimiento importante aunque no tenga relación con lo que busca. En términos más generales, se puede denominar así también a la casualidad, coincidencia o accidente”

I was trying to take photos of a beautiful tulip I'd been given, which had lovely frilly petals, and feeling frustrated because I couldn't get anything to work. Just then, 2 petals fell off a small tulip from a cheap supermarket bunch and floated down in front of it. So, I'm afraid this wasn't really planned. It just happened. :)

My best image of a hummingbird to date, shot out my kitchen window in my bathrobe, if you must know.

So... two Fridays ago I ask Darling Tonia if she'd like to catch a sunset at Reflection Lakes and she says yes, but after a quick dinner my umph went away knowing I was going to work the weekend, so after working twelve days straight and it being the following Friday she folds her arms and declares that we are going. With a loud sucking sound I pull myself off the couch and my legs are shaking they are so exhausted, she drives. I spent about an hour working the scene and nothing is happening, there is smoke in the area, but the mountain is clear, pristine, yet no blue hour/sunset magic. Still, we got out and had a nice afternoon and headed for the barn. One mile down the road, on the OTHER side of the Tatoosh Mountain Range THIS is going on...

A stroke of luck when this mega rarity flew past me as I was making my way back to the boat on Inner Farne, Northumberland.

Perhaps this Bridled Tern had heard a UK heatwave was on the way - he should really be almost 5,000 miles away & sunning himself in the Caribbean.

Continuing with the splendor that I experienced when I stepped away from the camper (shown in comments) on this glorious morning.

Conveniently another early riser quietly paddled slowly by in his red canoe in the rain as the loons, grebes and other songbirds serenaded us with their soothing morning song. It just doesn't get much better than this.

Thanks for taking the time to look, and for any comments and faves. Always appreciated!

This was not a shot demonstrating my level of skill. This was literally pure serendipity.

I had wanted to try and capture just such a shot for some weeks now. This morning while out composing shots with the moon serendipity smiled upon me: while reframing and about to shoot I saw the plane fly into the frame, managed to press the shutter at just the right time, and happened to be using a fast enough shutter speed---1/2500---that I snagged the capture.

For me, so far, a once in a lifetime capture.

Serendipity.. this person just walked into frame, adding a human element as I was making a test shot.

Surprised to meet anyone else on such a rainy day.

I drove out to a country road to photograph a sunset tht promised to be the best in months... and was stunned to have a dozen skydivers drop into my field of view! What an awesome day this has been, in so many ways!

Somewhere between Davis, Ca., and Winters, Ca. November, 2020.

Edit: I later realized I was east of the small Yolo Airport, which must be where they landed.

Just as I got the camera set up this very brief ray of light appeared (and disappeared). Copper mines valley, Coniston.

Swimming hole in Australia. With some effort I was able to compose the shot to create the heart. I was very tempted to clone out the straggling grass tuft on the right, but to do that would bring the legitimacy of the image into question, so it stays.
