Walking the cliffs along the ocean after the largest storm San Diego had seen since December 2010. Lovely sentiments carved in the stone and weathered by the water.
just outside of Jonesville, Louisiana, we crossed a bridge and glimpsed this. I shot off the road without my entourage, and we were separated for some time. What did we ever do without cell phones?
Finally hit Explore on July 19.

SERENDIPITY:

This year’s flower season in the eastern Columbia River Gorge has been the worst I’ve seen in eight years of making the annual pilgrimage out there to shoot them.. It appears the Pacific Northwest’s insanely warm and sunny winter weather pushed the balsamroot much too early. Most are small or beaten up from wind so it takes a lot of searching to find patches healthy enough to use. On this evening I watched the forecast closely as an unstable air mass cleared out-- the perfect setup for sunset color. It poured buckets for about 40 miles on the drive out, creating a lot of doubt in mind about my choice to make a last minute dash to go shoot. I was more than a little relieved to see the solid sheet of rain ease and the stratus layer break just a few miles from the trailhead. In the end I was treated to one of the better sky shows I’ve seen in the eastern Gorge. After a lot of running, and a bit of luck, I finally stumbled upon this little patch of semi-healthy balsamroot close to a character filled tree. It made the whole trip worth it.
For those who may be interested, this month’s issue of Outdoor Photographer contains an article on my photography. Please feel free to wander on over and give it a read!

Funny how you can stare at your own photographs for ages without realising what you've captured. This is a shot of two razorbills and one other animal, if you can spot it.

The blue sky peaked through the clouds, the shone on the horizon, the geese took flight, all this while I was privileged enough to witness it.
Serendipity - an aptitude for making desirable discoveries by accident. Chancing across this magical pianist at sunset was magical.

So here's the story of Cooper luck...
Gregg waits for 3 years to return to work and all that time he sits patiently by watching the construction of Cars Land and wating for the grand opening so he can get in there and finally take some pictures of it. Well a week before it opens, we find out that none of the people in our photo group got selected for the AP Preview day. Gregg also gets the long awaited phone call that he will be returning to work. The problem is, his first day back at work is on June 15th, Grand Opening day of Cars Land. ARRGH!
In another stroke of luck, one of our hot sauce customers won tickets to the Media Preview day on the 14th and offered their two extra tickets to my wife Diane and I. Diane's dad is in ill health so she says that I should take Gregg and she can spend the day with her family. The day I contact Gregg to see if he can come on the 14th also happened to be his birthday.
So the morning of the 14th rolls around and there we are in Cars Land, all happy and excited. The only drawback is it is June and we have nothing but gray overcast skies. Well, since it was already a big bunch of luck for Gregg, around 12:00 the skies cleared and gave us these glorious blue skies with white puffy clouds.
Hence the title, Serendipity!

After dinner with many, many great friends at Cock and Bull in Glendale, I took Woodtick, Nate-Dogg and Lambo to the old B&O Wayne yard for a bit of late day shooting.
As the sun broke through the cloud cover, we heard a north bound blowing for Stockton road. Nate was joking about how much he wanted a "SpongeBob Squarecab" to be leading this train. He got his wish! Two brand new GP38-3 rebuilds, fresh out of Huntington Locomotive shops in West Virginia lead train Q558 north toward Lima, Ohio.
It should be noted, there was no help of any kind here. No phone calls, text, ATCS, ETH, or even a scanner. Merely railfanning in its purest sense; watch the signals and hope something cool arrives before you lose the light.
As I was setting up this shot, I accidentally knocked over the vase holding this flower. Water spilled everywhere!
It wasn't until I put the flower back in the vase and prepared to take the picture that I noticed the little water droplet clinging to the underside of the petal.
That's what I call serendipity!
"In reality, serendipity accounts for one percent of the blessings we receive in life, work and love. The other 99 percent is due to our efforts." ~ Peter McWilliams
What are the chances that a butterfly happens upon a photoshoot, and then to actually capture it in the moment with a lens!?! :)

When I started taking this long exposure photo I thought it would have been better with someone standing in the doorway. As if by magic my friend Warren happened to wander throught the door!

My husband and I were photographing some flowers at Boyce Thompson Arboretum's Language of Flowers exhibit, when my son walked through the doorway and happened to put his hand over this backlit Valentine decal on the window.
