In December we went skiing on Mt. Rose, near Reno, Nevada. I took this shot near the summit while riding the lift.

I processed a smooth HDR photo from a RAW exposure and desaturated the result.

Two weeks ago we went hiking along the coast of Santa Cruz, California. I caught these waves shortly after sunset.

I processed a balanced HDR photo from a RAW exposure, then desaturated the result.

After going to an entrepreneurship event in San Francisco I went to nearby Mission Creek. There are houseboats since the sixties. This is the view from the houseboat area towards the new development. I am not sure what the purpose of this round UFO is.

I processed a balanced HDR photo from a RAW image, pulled the curves for mid tones, and desaturated the image.

Usually I post one photo per day. I am kind of excited about this photo I took last night after visiting a friend in Foster City, California. Foster City is an artificial town built by landfill. It has canals like in Venice. This is the view from a wooden hut on the lake in the center of Foster City. You see a stream of light from an aircraft approaching San Francisco airport. I like the warm and cold color combination in this scene. It was a windy night, resulting in clouds on the move in the 30 sec exposure, and in fuzzy tree leaves blowing in the wind.

I processed a single exposure into an HDR photo to enhance the micro-contrast. HDR processing involves a lot of experimentation. I took two exposures but found that the result looks better by using just one.

Two years ago we went to the Upper Antelope Canyon near Page, Arizona. It's a very unique slot canyon, definitely something I recommend anyone to have on the bucket list. The canyon is in a Navajo Indian reservation - you have to take a guided tour to see it. We took a tour at around noon, at which time you get these nice beams shining straight down into the narrow canyon.

I had the camera on automatic when I took three exposures holding the camera against the wall. The ISO was high, so I used the JPG files instead of the RAW ones for HDR processing because Sony has very good in-camera noise reduction. I used the tree exposures for a natural HDR processing, then desaturated the image.

Last year we went hiking along the coast of Santa Cruz, California. At the lighthouse we met a group of people playing drums and juggling with fire. I took this shot from around the corner, you can see the fire dancers in the back. A parked car just turned on the headlights, which gave this interesting lights and shadows.

I processed a balanced HDR photo from a RAW exposure, desaturated the image, and carefully pulled the curves.

In November 2014 I went back to my hometown Schuders, located higher up in the Swiss Alps. One day with a sea of fog below in the valley - I took this shot of a childhood neighbor friend with her dog.

I processed a paintery and a balanced HDR photo from a RAW exposure, and merged them selectively, taking the paintery one for the foreground. After that I carefully pulled the curves, and desaturated the resulting image. (I posted the color version before.)

As part of the Outside The Box challenge, here is another technique I haven't tried before - panning motion, tracking a moving subject. I took a *lot* of pics with my 5n and I was astounded to find one where his face was sharp but the background is suitably 'fast' looking.

Who would like to join our zen meditation class at Hakone Gardens in Saratoga, California? We practice zazen (座禅, Japanese for "seated meditation") on Saturday mornings. On this photo I am in the back facing the shoji window; I asked the priest to press the shutter. When I meditate regularly I find that I am more balanced, and that I can't get stressed so easily. Info and RSVP at the Eimei University Meetup group.

After going to a meeting in San Francisco I went to the Sutro Bath ruins near the Cliff House. Some folks walked by, enjoying the golden hour.

I processed a balanced HDR photo from a RAW exposure, and applied a filter to turn the intense gold in the original image into a scene with a classic look.
