Happy Slider Sunday! Saturday morning started with a -11F sunrise and the day didn't get any better. Within a few hours the skies clouded over again and by the afternoon another snowstorm arrived. Three exposure HDR processed with Nik HDR Efex Pro 2

Last September we spent 2 1/2 days at a camp with rocketeers in the Black Rock Desert in Nevada. One evening we went North to see a natural hot spring. We stopped to take this sunset scene.

Earlier this year I joined a fun a photowalk on beautiful Mt. Tamalpais near Mill Valley, north of San Francisco. We were greeted by a spectacular sunset.

What do you think is more fun, the anticipation of a trip or the trip itself?
I took three bracketed exposures but used only the bright one to get the walkway in motion. The RAW image has enough dynamic range except for the bright reflections in the glass.

On my birthday in January we walked along the coastline of the city of Santa Cruz. I positioned myself on a big rock to witness the sunset. I got very close to the edge of the rock, expecting and fearing some water gushes from big waves coming in. Just in case I had the cheap kit lens on the camera. And bam it came. I tried to protect the camera from the salt water. I succeeded to a certain degree, but that left a finger in the frame. This is the cleaned version - see original version below.
I processed a balanced HDR photo from a single underexposed RAW exposure. The RAW file enabled me to fix the lights using the curve function. RAW images have a much higher dynamic range, over 12 f-stops at 100 ISO with the sensor I use.

We had clear skies and some haze/smog in the Silicon Valley. I was hoping for a deep red sunset, so we headed to Alviso. I took this shot of the sunset at Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge, less red than anticipated.

I processed a balanced and a paintery HDR photo from a RAW exposure, merged them selectively, and carefully pulled the curves to pop the scene.

Two weeks ago we went hiking along the coast of Santa Cruz, California. I caught these waves shortly after sunset.

After going to an entrepreneurship event in San Francisco I went to nearby Mission Creek. There are houseboats since the sixties. This is the view from the houseboat area towards the new development. I am not sure what the purpose of this round UFO is.

Usually I post one photo per day. I am kind of excited about this photo I took last night after visiting a friend in Foster City, California. Foster City is an artificial town built by landfill. It has canals like in Venice. This is the view from a wooden hut on the lake in the center of Foster City. You see a stream of light from an aircraft approaching San Francisco airport. I like the warm and cold color combination in this scene. It was a windy night, resulting in clouds on the move in the 30 sec exposure, and in fuzzy tree leaves blowing in the wind.
I processed a single exposure into an HDR photo to enhance the micro-contrast. HDR processing involves a lot of experimentation. I took two exposures but found that the result looks better by using just one.

Two years ago we went to the Upper Antelope Canyon near Page, Arizona. It's a very unique slot canyon, definitely something I recommend anyone to have on the bucket list. The canyon is in a Navajo Indian reservation - you have to take a guided tour to see it. We took a tour at around noon, at which time you get these nice beams shining straight down into the narrow canyon.

I had the camera on automatic when I took three exposures holding the camera against the wall. The ISO was high, so I used the JPG files instead of the RAW ones for HDR processing because Sony has very good in-camera noise reduction. I used the tree exposures for a natural HDR processing, then desaturated the image.
