This is a railway track passing by Alviso, California. This is not the main Amtrak track, but I side line crossing marshlands leading to an industrial area.

I processed a vibrant and a soft HDR photo from three RAW exposure, then merged them.

Aboard Swiss, about half way between Zurich and San Francisco I opened the shades and looked outside. It dawned on me that life is beautiful.

Taken at the Twin Peaks overlooking San Francisco about 45 min after sunset. We walked down on the grassy slope to get a good point of view of the curvy road in the foreground and downtown in the background. The brightly lit street is Market Street.

I used an NDR filter for this long time exposure. An ND filter is supposed to reduce the light evenly on the whole color spectrum, but it looks like there is a red tint in low light/long exposure condition. I think it adds some interesting flair to the scene. I processed the 30 sec exposure into a balanced HDR photo.

After going to an entrepreneurship event in San Francisco I went to nearby Mission Creek. There are houseboats since the sixties. In the last few years they got surrounded by high-rises. A local news article has some background on the houseboats. These overpasses are the end of Highway 280.

I processed a balanced HDR photo and a paintery HDR photo from two long exposure RAW images, pulled the curves for mid tones, and desaturated the image.

Last December we drove up north to Talmage, California, to visit the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas, the largest Zen Buddhist temple in the USA. This is the incense burner in front of The Jeweled Hall of 10,000 Buddhas. We had a wonderful vegetarian lunch.

Some time ago we experienced the Upper Antelope Canyon near Page, Arizona. It's a very unique slot canyon, definitely I recommend you to have on your bucket list. The canyon is in a Navajo Indian reservation - you have to take a guided tour to see it. We took a tour at around noon, at that time you get these nice beams shining straight down into the narrow canyon.

The title is a play on a song - you probably recognize it.

I had the camera on automatic when I took three exposures holding the camera against the wall. The ISO was high, so I used the JPG files instead of the RAW ones for HDR processing because Sony has very good in-camera noise reduction. I used the tree exposures for a natural HDR processing, then desaturated the image.

We had a beautiful red sky in the Silicon Valley last night. It lasted only about 10 min. We were driving on the freeway during that time; this is a shot out of the open window while at an overpass.

Chiesa del Purgatorio, Via Ridola, Matera, Basilicata, Italia

Despite having been completed in 1747, the Chiesa del Purgatorio Nuovo has a late Baroque façade, by Giuseppe Fatone, from Andria. It was built with funds from the Confraternity for the Poor Souls in Purgatory and donations from the citizens of Matera themselves, who also willingly played their part in the actual building of the church.

Its recurring and only theme is Death, which was very fashionable at the time and which was considered not as an end, but as the beginning of a better life.

The wooden door is divided into 36 panels, each devoted compulsively to the theme of death, with skulls and crossbones sometimes crowned with headgear belonging to rulers and prelates, intended to emphasise the fact that all men are equal after death.

Yesterday we walked along the coastline of the city of Santa Cruz. I had my camera and tripod with me, extra lens and filters in my pants pockets. We passed this person. Life is good.

I processed a balanced HDR photo from a single RAW exposure. I took bracketed exposures, but used only one because it had more distinct colors, and because the darks make the scene pop.

Recently we went to San Francisco for dinner. We passed by this alley walking along Chestnut Street in the Marina District.

I processed a balanced HDR photo from three RAW exposures and played with the color balance (don't touch the saturation!) to make it pop.
