Last night we went to a business mixer in San Francisco. After the event I dragged my two friends to a mini-photo shoot at the Transamerica building. This is the iconic pyramid skyscraper that is supposedly earthquake-proof. The whole building is suspended on concrete pillars. My friend checks his iPhone.
I processed a balanced HDR photo from a RAW exposure.

On my birthday in January we walked along the coastline of the city of Santa Cruz. I positioned myself on a big rock to witness the sunset. I got very close to the edge of the rock, expecting and fearing some water gushes from big waves coming in. Just in case I had the cheap kit lens on the camera. And bam it came. I got wet, but I could protect the camera from the salt water with my body. This is the second try with a lot of water; I posted the first trial earlier.
I processed a balanced HDR photo from a single underexposed RAW exposure. The RAW file enabled me to fix the lights using the curve function. RAW images have a much higher dynamic range, over 12 f-stops at 100 ISO with the sensor I use (the lower the ISO, the higher the f-stops.)

The Golden Gate Bridge is pretty, no matter from what angle you look at. This is a lesser known view from Fort Baker on the Sausalito side of the bridge.
I processed an enhanced HDR photo from two long exposure RAW images, and desaturated the result.

I joined a photowalk on Mt. Tamalpais near Mill Valley, north of San Francisco. We were a big group. Everybody started to leave the mountain after the sun settled. Walking back I turned around and saw this. Sometimes you get rewarded with unexpected things!
I processed a balanced HDR photo from a RAW exposure, and fixed the color balance and curves to get this warm silhouette look.

The Grand View Park is a nice hill in San Francisco, not too far from the ocean. There is fine sand up there, likely blown from the ocean beach. This shot facing NW is shortly before sunset. The Golden Gate Park is the green stripe in the distance.

This is a railway track passing by Alviso, California. This is not the main Amtrak track, but I side line crossing marshlands leading to an industrial area.
I processed a vibrant and a soft HDR photo from three RAW exposure, then merged them.

Aboard Swiss, about half way between Zurich and San Francisco I opened the shades and looked outside. It dawned on me that life is beautiful.

Taken at the Twin Peaks overlooking San Francisco about 45 min after sunset. We walked down on the grassy slope to get a good point of view of the curvy road in the foreground and downtown in the background. The brightly lit street is Market Street.
I used an NDR filter for this long time exposure. An ND filter is supposed to reduce the light evenly on the whole color spectrum, but it looks like there is a red tint in low light/long exposure condition. I think it adds some interesting flair to the scene. I processed the 30 sec exposure into a balanced HDR photo.

After going to an entrepreneurship event in San Francisco I went to nearby Mission Creek. There are houseboats since the sixties. In the last few years they got surrounded by high-rises. A local news article has some background on the houseboats. These overpasses are the end of Highway 280.
I processed a balanced HDR photo and a paintery HDR photo from two long exposure RAW images, pulled the curves for mid tones, and desaturated the image.

Last December we drove up north to Talmage, California, to visit the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas, the largest Zen Buddhist temple in the USA. This is the incense burner in front of The Jeweled Hall of 10,000 Buddhas. We had a wonderful vegetarian lunch.

Some time ago we experienced the Upper Antelope Canyon near Page, Arizona. It's a very unique slot canyon, definitely I recommend you to have on your bucket list. The canyon is in a Navajo Indian reservation - you have to take a guided tour to see it. We took a tour at around noon, at that time you get these nice beams shining straight down into the narrow canyon.
The title is a play on a song - you probably recognize it.
I had the camera on automatic when I took three exposures holding the camera against the wall. The ISO was high, so I used the JPG files instead of the RAW ones for HDR processing because Sony has very good in-camera noise reduction. I used the tree exposures for a natural HDR processing, then desaturated the image.
