This is the facelift version ("MOPF") of the W 222 S-Class. The S 500 is powered by a twin turbo 3.0L V6 engine (which is a downsizing from the previous 4.7L V8). Gone are the times where you could expect a full-size engine in a Mercedes named "500".
On 10th February 2013, Trainworks rail museum at Thirlmere conducted a "Diesel Day". As well as 4001 performing shuttles to Buxton, on show were CFCLA's S300 and S311.
4803 "looks on" as S300 is open for display on the museum platform.

Double paned soundproofed glass was an innovation on this model. Other novelties were ESP introduced in 1995, an own development using on-board computers to improve vehicle handling response. Xenon High-intensity discharge headlights (1995), Brake Assist System BAS (1996), door mounted side airbags and seat occupancy sensors (1997). Automatic windscreen wipers with rain sensors were also introduced in 1996. This particular car belonged to King Albert II. It was delivered as an S 500, but only a few weeks later, he had a 6.0 V12 AMG engine fitted.

On Friday 2/12/2016, 4578s is seen between Mambray Creek & Port Germein (SA) with B61-S317-GM27-GM10-S302 (last loco dead attached) in charge. This was the second of the two movements with SSR hauling ex Leigh Creek coal wagons to NSW.
