Production began in 1979 and continued until 1991, with a major update in 1985. The sedans were available as S, SE and SEL models, the latter featuring a wheelbase extended by 14 cm. Buyers could choose from 4 petrol engines offered in 13 power variants. Important new safety technologies, such as electronically controlled ABS, were introduced. It was also one of the first cars to undergo highly comprehensive crash tests. The excellent characteristics and high build quality led to enormous commercial success, with a total production of 818.063 units. Bruno Sacco was responsible for the design.

On Friday 2/12/2016, 4578s is seen passing through the 'new' (c1970) Jamestown yard (SA) with B61-S317-GM27-GM10-S302 (last loco dead attached) in charge. This was the second of the two movements with SSR hauling 90 ex Leigh Creek coal wagons to NSW.
Although they're not the original number plates, they do still have Western Mercedes on them, whose sticker on this car is 99.9% certainly the one it was sold new with.

This is the facelift version ("MOPF") of the W 222 S-Class. The S 500 is powered by a twin turbo 3.0L V6 engine (which is a downsizing from the previous 4.7L V8). Gone are the times where you could expect a full-size engine in a Mercedes named "500".
