EL Zorro Loaded Grain Service powers out of Manor Loop, Melbourne behind S300, T387, T342, 442s2 and GM36...
There is not too long to wait until we will see the new Mercedes S-Class on the market. With it arriving in June, then the testing is coming close to the end and the car is in a very much less disguised form when out and about. This means that spy shots can show a lot more detail these days. The latest photos of it while being tested have revealed the look of the grille and it seems to be very much inspired by the F700 concept car from 2008.
Many people are much more interested in what will be inside the car though and this cannot be seen in the photos. There are expected to be some interesting changes that will be expected with the new S-class.
It is expected that there will be four sizes of saloon with the regular and long wheelbase being joined by two longer versions due to demand from markets such as the Chinese, who are frantically buying up the longer European saloon vehicles. The 6500mm will be able to seat two extra people but will not be an MPV, but have two rear facing seats which will fold away when not in use. There will also be a slightly smaller version which will have lots of rear legroom and compete with the Rolls-Royce Ghost.
The S-class will have Magic Ride Control which involves front facing cameras analysing the road conditions ahead and changing the damping rates accordingly. This means that rather than the driver adjusting suspension, that happens in some cars, this will now be completely automatic.
Another unique feature is the lack of light bulbs. The car will have all LED lights of which the front ones will dim automatically when traffic is seen ahead. There is even a system where animals and pedestrians will be automatically spotlighted so that the driver is aware of these hazards in the dark. The rear lights can also be varied with regards to their light intensity. These reductions cut power use and therefore CO2 use. Mercedes have reported that this reduction could be as much as 2.1g/km.
With these cameras, the car can actually see, well to some extent. It will react when there are obstacles ahead, by warning the driver, flashing the headlights and even braking automatically. This should help to prevent accidents when the driver is distracted.
It is even possible for the car to drive itself at times. Not only can it brake if necessary but it has built in radars which will mean that it can change lanes and overtake on its own. It will additionally be able to straighten the car in a lane and even notice if a car behind is making an attempt to undertake. These are useful features for motorway driving, especially as boredom tends to lead to erratic driving in some people.
There will be a selection of engine choices. There will be three hybrid choices with either 41bhp, 61bhp or 109bhp electrical engines as well as the internal combustion engine. This shows that they are very aware of the demand for cleaner and more efficient vehicles, but some drivers are not willing to compromise of power. For the AMG there is a V12 bi-turbo giving 680bhp. The S65 AMG will have lighter carbon fibre items such as doors, boot and bonnet, so that it will have additional speed. The V6 will be returned but in 2017 they will cease production and provide a more frugal replacement.

The Mercedes-Benz W140 is a series of flagship vehicles that were manufactured by the German automotive company Mercedes-Benz from 1991 to 1998.
As with each generation of S-Class, a plethora of innovations in technology, climate protection, and creature comfort was introduced. Those innovations later trickled down to smaller C-Class and E-Class models over time.
The three body types are carried over from the W126: four-door sedan/saloon in two wheelbase lengths and one two-door coupé. The model types are assigned as W140 for standard wheelbase, V140 for long wheelbase, and C140 for coupé. In 1996, S-Class coupé was renamed as CL-Class and spun off from S-Class. A longer Pullman version with 4140 mm wheelbase was introduced in 1995 with two engine choices (S 500 Pullman and S 600 Pullman). The S 600 Pullman could be ordered with armour package.
Shown here is the second-lowest selling version of the W140 range, the short wheelbase 600 SE (later known as S600). This featured the shorter of the two saloon bodystyles, paired with the largest (standard engine), the new to Mercedes-Benz, M120 6.0 L V12. This engine featured 4 valves per cylinder and DOHC, producing a mighty 600 kW.
As an early series W140 car, it can be identified by the amber turn signals.
Though somewhat brutal looking, the W140 once again cemented Mercedes' claim to build the best car in the world.
The W140 range, would later go on to provide the basis for the reintroduction of the Maybach marque in 2002.
I was fortunate enough to attend the public launch of the W140 range in Sydney in 1991 - a spectacular affair, thousands of people, food, drink and entertainment.

AutoArt Contemporary, which is also a dealer edition/promotion Autoart was commissioned to produced when the W221 S-Klasse was released. Quality is not that great; interior looks good with the correct shapes etc. but lacks detailing and refinement of regular AutoArts, this also lacks rear opening doors, carpets and unrealistic door hinges, such a shame. I used to ignore this design when it came out but the more I looked at it, the more I liked it, and it made me think it's the best looking modern S-Class generation out there; it is very unique with its sharp but curvaceous lines and surfaces followed by it's hips or it's wheel arches. I love the taillights a lot which sadly got taken away when it was face-lifted in 2009/2010. The new S-Class is beautiful, but not as great looking as it's predecessor.

"DEJA VU"
She was revisited by me twice, in the late 70's and early 80's.
She really looked her age.
Many times repainted, with wooden decks worn.
I had to carry out the yearly Government radio survey.
I have to admit, i was a bit excited, as she had been my home for some 14 months.
And the very first of a total of 10 Shell tankers.
Upon entering the midship superstructure i felt thrown back into the sixties.
Out of the 4th officers cabin came, unmistakebly, the voice of the young officer who occupied that cabin in 1964.
Was this real ?
Yes it was real,
the very same person i sailed with in 1964, now working for the London office, and attending to some company business.
He occupied that same 4th officers cabin.
A "deja vu" experience if there ever was one.
