Dune 45 is a star dune in the Sossusvlei area of the Namib Desert in Namibia. Its name comes from the fact that it is at the 45th kilometre of the road that connects the Sesriem gate and Sossusvlei. Standing over 80 m, it is composed of 5-million-year-old sand that is detritus accumulated by the Orange River from the Kalahari Desert and then blown here

I'm pleased to see the Sand Martin preparing to nest again this year in a small rockface here in my village.

Yesterday, I again witnessed and photographed what I believe may be their mating and pairing activities, with males having in-flight fights that can get quite vicious.

It's no secret that one of my very favourite places to be is beside the sea along the Great Ocean Road.

Just recently we rented a beautiful little cottage only 200m from the beach which meant getting up at the crack of dawn . . . or in this case just before, was a must do.

I had planned to get up around 5.30am in the hope of catching a colourful sunrise . . . I woke around 5.15 and my comfy bed beckoned me to stay . . . but once glimpse out he window and the faintest hint of pink in the sky was all I needed . . . that and the chance to give my brand new DSLR it's first true run.

I was not disappointed and my early rise was reward with a spectacularly colourful sunrise (my camera did not disappoint either) . . . there was not a soul about and the beach for those couple of hours was my own, to bask and enjoy in the beautiful morning light . . . just blissful.

This is one of my very favourite shots from the weekend.

Scientific name: Riparia riparia.

The tiny, brown-and-white sand martin is a common summer visitor to the UK, nesting in colonies on rivers, lakes and flooded gravel pits. It returns to Africa in winter. Info:RSPB.

Many thanks to people who view or comment on my photos.

This is a 5 stitch image captured by zooming in and panning to get a closer view from afar, but to get a nice high resolution capture of the dunes, mountains, and desert brush. The dunes are 800 feet tall and about 6 miles across in this view, to help give it scale.

Trying to give it my best on a dreary day in Vancouver. The tide is out and the clouds are in. For a while it is not raining and it is time to get out, go for a long walk and find some interesting elements to shoot.

Low tide at Sand Beach on Loch Gairloch, Wester Ross, with the Isle of Skye in the background.

We are home after three wonderful weeks in the UK, mostly in the Highlands of Scotland. Hope to catch up with everyone in the next few days.

Thanks for stopping by and for all of your kind comments, awards and faves -- I appreciate them all.

Sand man, or maybe a mud bear? This was on the edge of a pool on the sandy beach at Bear Lake State Park, Idaho.

We made the short hike which includes a slickrock ascent, to the Sand Caves near Kenab, Utah. The caves were created in the 1970s by sand miners to make glass. The caves are now a popular tourist attraction. Near a highway, they receive a lot of visitors. Many of them have chiseled graffiti in the sandstone.

I love marks in sand, how nature creates forms and "waves".

Hope you will join us too.

A shot from the Great Sand Dunes National Park in Colorado. We went there in 2019 and only had a few hours to spend there. I would love to go back one day and spend more time. It's a really cool place.

Thank you for stopping by !!

Took a few photos of a few different things while in Pembrokeshire, including an hour shooting abstract shapes in the sand at Watwick Bay. The beach was pristine, no footprints just these lovely patterns in the sand.

'THE MYSTERY OF THE BLACK HOLE.'

An old bridge spans a local canal and its slapdash brickwork construction offers a few nesting holes that are readily occupied by Sand Martins each year.

This image shows an adult bird standing in a nesting hole just seconds before flying. Later the bird returned with its mate and they both clung to the brickwork and peered into the darkness.

At first, I thought they were investigating a possible nest site. However, after enlarging this image I noticed some nesting material. Perhaps breeding activity was already underway. At what stage though, has to remain a mystery! Birds came and went a number of times but were never seen carrying anything in their beaks.
