...appears in summer's scenery ...

he flits about

without a word,

then vanishes in the greenery!

... Ruby-throated Hummingbird surprised.

Ruby-throated Hummingbird (Archilochus colubris) checking out a sunflower in our Pollinator Garden, Meadville, Pennsylvania.

I spent a few hours in my back yard flower garden this past Sunday July 29th trying to photograph the hummingbirds feeding there. It took an hour or so for them to get familiar with me and then a few of the braver ones hovered into camera range while feeding. It was a beautiful summer day and the light was wonderful. Here are a few of my favorites from our little photo shoot

While watching the Yellow Bellied Sapsucker I saw this Ruby-Throated Hummingbird following along behind drink the sap. How cool is that!

We have just one pair of hummers that visit us and they would only come to the feeder at dusk after sunset when the light is too low for a decent shutter speed. They finally became brave enough to visit during the afternoon. They only stay a few seconds.

A female ruby-throated hummingbird, I think. They are very active at the feeder now. They also feed in our flower gardens, and on insects such as black flies, mosquitoes and spiders.
