Next to meeting Route 66 icon Angel Delgadillo in Seligman, AZ, meeting and chatting with Ernie Edwards was another great experience. If you don't know, Ernie owned the landmark "Pig Hip Restaurant" on Route 66 in Broadwell, Illinois. He was also was among the first to be inducted into the Route 66 Association of Illinois Hall of Fame. By the time we met, Ernie had closed the restaurant, and it had become a museum of Route 66 in the area, as well as of the Pig Hip. It was chock full of great stuff. Everywhere I turned, something else to "Wow" over. I probably spent an hour, looking at items, buying a couple of things, and chatting with Ernie all the while. It was really a high point of my first end-to-end Route 66 trip. (I'd done portions here and there, but never the whole thing on one dedicated trip.)
After getting home, about 6 months later, my heart was broken to learn that the Pig Hip had caught fire and burned down in March of 2007. I immediately thought of all that history, all the "Wow" stuff I'd seen in there. I felt terrible for Ernie, and for my fellow Route 66 fans who'll now never see this in all it's glory.
Fast forward to April 2012, and Ernie himself is gone. Passed away at 94. Yes, certainly a good run, but sometimes you just wish some people would always be there. Like Ernie. I treasure the memory of hearing his stories, his corny jokes, and the warmth of a guy that'd treat you like an old friend the moment you walked in the door of the old Pig Hip.

One of the points of this is what I always tell people. Want to do Route 66 or ANY historic highway? Do it now, or ASAP. Had I waited a year, I'd have never seen the Pig Hip. Neat stuff, historic stuff disappears along the old routes constantly. Do them now. See what's left before all you pass is memories.

Route 333 (Special Service) : Hertford East Station - Chapmore End
📍 Chapmore End, Ware, Hertfordshire
151 is the only route at Sutton Garage left without any EVs, this is due to the turnarounds in Worcester Park. 151 is a great route to get photos of the DOEs, so catch them when you can.
South Wales Transport route 14 from Swansea was by March 1981 the last SWT service to use half cab buses. This was due to a very tight bend in Murton requiring short vehicles. Not long after I took these pictures the route went OMO using I think Bedford midibuses.
On a typically bright and sunny Welsh spring late afternoon number 861 stands at the Pennard terminus.
"Coal, the fuel of the future!"....er...yeah, right....
Oct. 19, 2021: The "Bug House" is a 1984 creation of architect Bart Prince located in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The home appears to be floating in mid-air. Area residents also refer the structure at the "Spaceship UFO House." While a private residence, there is lots to see from street level. Dinosaurs and other sculptures protect the property. A newer second aerial house also is located on the property.
Nostalgia
Before the Interstate system and the big motel chains, U.S. Highways were lined by motor courts which often featured individual bungalows with attached car-ports. Often large neon signs were used to lure swarms of newly mobile tourists especially in the 1940's and 1950's.
Route 66 used to pass through Santa Fe until the late 1930's when a shorter route was built by-passing New Mexico's state capitol.
The first units of the El Rey Court (its original name) were built in 1936 on the original Route 66 as it swung through Santa Fe. A year later, US 66 bypassed Santa Fe, but thanks to the popularity of Santa Fe, The motor courts still prospered on Cerrillos Road.
Most of the motor courts have disappeared, driven out of business by the large chains and luxury hotels and inns after the 50's and 60's.
A few however, still remain, and remind us of those earlier days of travel in the west. A good example, is the El Rey Inn. It has been lovingly restored and expanded and is a comfortable throwback to those motor court days.
I was given their contact information by a friend and we stayed there on our last night in New Mexico. It was an excellent choice - clean, comfortable, and nostalgic with beautifully manicured grounds inside the court.
I couldn't resist taking a few photos, especially after I spotted this vintage Hudson.

On a rather damp Saturday 23 November 2019, London bus route 140 Harrow-Heathrow celebrated its history and marked its imminent shortening by supplementing 15 heritage buses into the existing service. This meant Volvo / Wright Gemini buses (and a solitary Plaxton President) were joined by 8 RTs, 5 Routemasters and 2 Metrobuses for the day.
My visit included photo stops at Hayes, Heathrow and Harrow Weald taking advantage of free rides aboard RM1397, M1069 and RT2177.
