Some of these guys stayed all winter this year despite its extreme harshness. The prey situation must have been very good.

This was fun.... Trying to catch these Rough-Winged Swallows going in and out of their nesting cavity while holding my lens over top of them. Talk about awkward and crazy, as there was a gnarly drop down off the bridge into the creek.

The Rough-legged Hawk is one of our Winter visitors in the northern states and raptors that are a part of winter birding in Michigan. These hawks can be found in open fields or open areas next to forests. They breed on the northern edge of North America and can be found in a good deal of the Lower 48 during winter. I spotted this bird on my way to a waste treatment plant where I hoped to find a flock of Ross's Geese. The time was about 8 AM, and the sun was rising and the temperature was cold. The bird was perched far enough from the road that it didn't flush when I parked.

I later found 17 Ross's Geese, but they were too far from the shore to provide a usable photo.

There was heavy surf off the coast 2 days ago as a result of Hurricane Sam which passed well east of us.

……But not as rough as it can get in winter months in Coverack! This was an Easterly wind that was whipping a bit of a swell- on the other side of the Lizard it was flat!…….. Hope Friday is going well, stay locked down and cosy to stay safe and to keep EVERYONE else safe too! A VERY BIG THANK YOU to ALL the key workers who are carrying on to benefit the rest of us - we applaud you all. Alan;-)👏👏👏👏👏

Wish you all a quiet start into the new week!

Isamu Noguchi respected nature. He could choose a piece of stone and communicate with it as we do with human beings. What do I see inside you? What do you want from me? How can I 'liberate' your potential?

Noguchi always sought a balance between nature and culture. Sometimes crude interventions with powerful tools were enough to turn a rough boulder into a cracking sculpture.

Der Aufstieg zu den Quarksteinen bei Niedercrinitz.

Photographed in Kittitas County, Washington on a very fogy day. The fog is obvious in most of the photos I took that day. I picked a bad day. I was searching for Short-eared Owls that were reported a few day earlier but did not find them. I did find a large number of Bald Eagles and Red-tailed Hawks.

On our way home from a "birding" outing yesterday we spotted a hawk on a power line. It was almost dark and I had lots of trouble with light. The reason I am posting this shot was because the bird really posed an ID problem for us--not because it was a great shot! We really struggled for an ID and spent some time with our noses in a guide books. We came to the conclusion that it was a Rough-legged Hawk only to be told by a friend that all Rough-legged Hawks were in Alaska at this time of the year. Back to the books! Finally we sent the pictures to a long time "birder" who agreed with us that it was a Rough-legged Hawk and verified it by sending the pictures to a Hawk Expert. Final decision--it is a juvenile Rough-legged Hawk who must have his timing off and decided to migrate early. Getting the correct ID on a bird can not only be a challenge but fun and educational too.

Haithabu / Schleswig-Holstein / Germany

Haithabu (Hedeby) was an important Viking city in the Middle Ages (8th to the 11th centuries) and now an UNESCO World Heritage Site with open-air museum. Before and after this time, it was just a beautiful piece of land.

Route 1 near Monterey

As I wade through my recent mediocre woodland photo I start to get autumn fatigue. I know it’s hardly started yet and the apex of colour has not appeared but as I go through my Saturday haul, tweaking here and there I had this urge for the sea. So a quick dive back to September and a particular rough morning gives my fix. It will be autumn woodland again tomorrow, I must be able to find at least another from Saturday worthy of posting!
