An American Magpie (Pica hudsonia) patiently and I would say boldly waits next to Rough-legged Hawk (Buteo lagopus) as it feeds on a white goose, likely dead from the avian flu which occurred in the migrant flocks of geese in the area. It would attempt to scavenge any bits of scraps left by the hawk which was observed feeding in a stubble field east of Tofield, Alberta, Canada.

The path between wood buttresses may seem easy to some but these two snails are in for a rough journey.

Sometimes the birds are too close for the lens you are using as was the case with this Rough-legged Hawk (Buteo lagopus) observed in the Beaverhill Lake area east of Tofield, Alberta, Canada.
Creativity makes up for what could be a discarded image so I hope you enjoy it. It is somewhat soft in the resolution but the overall detail in the bird makes up for this minor flaw.

About to lift off. This pose clearly shows the leg feathers that extend down to the feet. This feature gave rise the common name.
In Europe, this Hawk is called "Rough-legged Buzzard"
This looks like a light adult male.

This is considered a weed by most people. The flowers are only about 1/8th of an inch. If you look at many weeds through a macro lens you can find that they are actually quite beautiful.
I hope everyone enjoys this image! :D
This was one of the closest encounter with this specie to date, this was shot with a 200mm lens. Snowy owls are the most sought after birds in winter, I would drive around for snowy owls and at least find some Rough legged hawks, surprisingly there are increasingly far less sightings this year.

I snuck out this morning while everyone was snoozing in the hotel. Only had a few hours to shoot, but came away with this Rough Legged Hawk jumping off an ugly yellow metal bar. The background was a beautiful mountain covered in snow in the distance. This was my best frame in the sequence. Click for larger view.
We took advantage of the hunting Rough Legged Hawks that day and waited patiently with the car off. Once they took off we took aim to get whatever pose we could get after each attempt.
