Utata ~ Iron Photographer 106
106, of course, is the atomic number of seaborgium—a synthetic element with a half-life of less than ten minutes, which seems to me would render it completely fucking useless. 106 is also the number of times Lindsay Lohan, who is also completely fucking useless, has been in rehab. So you'd think we'd be doing an IP involving Lindsay Lohan getting radioactive.
No such luck, you guys! Instead, the elements for Iron Photographer 106 are as follows:
1 - something metallic
2 - a root vegetable
3 - high key lighting
When considering the first element, something metallic, be aware of the distinction between 'metal' and 'metallic.' Something metallic could be something made of metal OR something that gives the appearance of metal. For example, Jamelah's baby shoes are bronzed, but not actually made of bronze. They also have three inch heels, but that's not the point. The point is the metallic thing can be metal or it can just appear to be metal.
The second element is a root vegetable. Yes, we're talking potatoes and yams, we're talking carrots and rutabagas, we're talking turnips boys and girls. Any root that also serves as a vegetable will do. If you've got a ginseng root handy, that'll work.
Now, because the first two elements are something metallic and a root vegetable, you're probably saying "Why Greg, old Sock, I know just the thing! A kitchen implement, by Jove!" To which I would reply, "Haven't we been through this 'old Sock' business already? And really? A kitchen implement? That's the best you can do?"
This is Iron Photographer, so we can't forbid you to use kitchen implements. Well, I guess actually we can—we can do whatever we want. No law can stop us! Kanye West couldn't interrupt us! We are all-powerful and all-kno...wait. Sorry. What I meant to say was you can use kitchen implements if you want. It just seems a wee bit obvious. So if you choose to do a kitchen implement, we hope you'll do something so good it knocks us on our butts.
Finally, the photograph must be shot using high key lighting. If you're unfamiliar with high key lighting—well, hey, that's why the gods gave us Google. In brief, a high key photograph is a bright image, one full of light with mostly white tones, little or no shadow, and a sort of bright and shiny mood. Although it sounds technical, it can be done without sophisticated technology.

My grass snippers attack a poor defenceless ginger root.
This shot has been reposted several times. With each version, I tried to make the shot more high key looking. I should have shot it the right way in the first place.

Roasted homegrown, heirloom beets are kissed with a vinegar, honey and red wine brine spiked with cinnamon, allspice, black peppercorns and turmeric. Canned, they're a gorgeous addition to the pantry that's equally delicious.

Root vegetables: root of all GOOD!
I made Jerry Traunfeld's Root Ribbons (recipe here) for my mom's birthday dinner a few weeks ago. It makes a pretty dish and healthy to boot. I wanted to make this the second I saw the recipe on Food52 and I'm glad I did and everyone loved it. Must note though that the ribbon-making of roots was serious labor and no joke - so if I make it again it'll have to another special occasion! By the way: you can use any root vegetables except for beet.

These are a different kind of potato, either Solanum x juzepczukii or Solanum x curtilobum
In the highest areas of the Andes, in southern Peru and adjacent Bolivia, people farm a different species of Potato, one that has a much higher tolerance for frost than regular potatoes.
Unfortunately, there are bitter compounds in the tubers and the process of removing those compounds produces these black wrinkled objects.
Here is a chapter from Neglected Crops: 1492 from a Different Perspective at Purdue. Scroll down to the Bitter Potato section for more information.
My traveling companion, noted orchid taxonomist Eric Christenson, describes eating them as a very aquired taste.

Veggie robbery
"Gimmie all yer green, now!"
What a corny pun.
1 - something metallic (Look out! He's got a paring knife!)
2 - a root vegetable (A floating beet.)
3 - high key lighting (I haz it....)
Picked up my weekly vegetable load at my CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) this week, and this guy was so pretty, he was just begging to be to be held up at knife point. Don't ask what's actually going to happen to him after the shoot. :)
I took this hearty ground beef and potato part of traditional British pub fare and tweaked it just slightly to make it vegetarian and lower fat, but still stick to your ribs and comforting. Making it in individual "pot pie" plates makes portion control, freezing and reheating easy for singles or families where everyone is on a different schedule too!

Before it went into the broth, the lotus root was admired for it's intricate beauty. Rustic and delicious.

Roasted beet with a simple dijon vinegrette and a sprinkling of salty goat feta cheese.
To roast a beet wrap in foil and bake for 90 mins on 450 degrees F. Cool and peel slimps off easily, slice and enjoy warm or cold.
A delicate bouquet of fresh from the farm carrots, all but one tinged a soft buttery yellow hue, more than the commonplace bright orange, showing some of the natural variety that can occur in this delightful vegetable (carrots also come in hues such as blackish purple and burgundy red).
While carrots are often associated with the early harvest of spring, I like to think that their mellow flavour, autumnal hues and the fact that they're a root vegetable make them perfectly suited to the pallet of fall as well.
