Time to round up the cows and head to supper - about 50 years ago. This abandoned Sherman County Farm was probably a great place to grow up in the mid-20th century if you didn't mind the isolation. There's a huge barn, farmhouse, several outbuildings and sheds and a great view of central Oregon's night skies. The Milky Way is slowly heading back underneath the horizon as fall progresses, but there are still a couple of months before it really disappears again until spring. Sure, the galactic core is mostly gone for now, but the Great Rift and other celestial features still are fantastic. Anyway, it was strange on this night - I didn't hear a single coyote.
"The first fall of snow is not only an event, it is a magical event. You go to bed in one kind of a world and wake up in another quite different, and if this is not enchantment then where is it to be found?"-J. B. Priestley
I saw the snow coming down last night before bed but I was not certain if it would still be here in the morning. I do not know yet if it will melt away or not but I am not waiting to find out. I am digging out warm socks and hiking boots and heading into the hills with the dog.

Milky way rising over a hoodoo in valley of the gods. The hoodoo was illuminated with a headlamp that created the white lens flare seen coming off the hoodoo.
A hoodoo (also called a tent rock, fairy chimney, and earth pyramid) is a tall, thin spire of rock that protrudes from the bottom of an arid drainage basin or badland. Hoodoos, which can range from 5-150 feet tall (1.5-45 meters), typically consist of relatively soft rock topped by harder, less easily eroded stone that protects each column from the elements. They generally form within sedimentary rock and volcanic rock formations.
Hoodoos are found mainly in the desert in dry, hot areas. In common usage, the difference between hoodoos and pinnacles or spires is that hoodoos have a variable thickness often described as having a "totem pole-shaped body." A spire, on the other hand, has a smoother profile or uniform thickness that tapers from the ground upward.

Though the smoke from the Rim Fire in Yosemite is pretty strong here in Lake Tahoe right now, I was still able to get some good shots of the Milky Way from King's Beach. The light pollution is likely from Tahoe City.

The moon was sitting bright on this Sunday evening. Although the moon was up, the milky way was just visible to the naked eye. I was walking with my night lamp at the time and decided to get a shot with the stars. I enjoy how this one came out

Sometimes you wonder if waking up at 2am and driving almost 2 hours to a remote area of Florida will be worth it. Then you turn off the car, step outside, and realize that it most definitely was, and then some.
The fates aligned perfectly this morning with no clouds, no moon, and some of the darkest sky you'll find in the state. I was finally able to see the Milky Way with my own eyes!

The family just got back from a trip to Mackinaw City and Mackinac Island. A great side benefit was a trip to the Headlands Dark Sky Park just west of Mackinaw City. This was one of my favorite frames from the park.

14mm on a crop is just not wide enough to get Polaris in there along with some foreground. Unfortunately I didn't realize this until AFTER I spent an hour shooting this. Argh
Also, light pollution from Cape Cod looks pretty gross from Nantucket, some 30 miles away.
