This snap was click during my Ladakh Biking Expedition @ Zingzingbar near Rohtang pass on Leh-Manali highway (India). We were all 7 persons for the expedition & we had 6 bikes & we travelled through Jammu-Srinagar-Leh-Manali-Chandigarh‎-Delhi route. On our return journey to Manali from Tso Moriri Lake we stopped at Pang.

From Pang we reached Baralacha La Pass. Baralacha La which is 8km long pass & 16,040 ft. equal in height to highest peak in Europe. During our journey to the pass it was heavily snowing and there was glacier dropped on the road blocking us for few minutes, then we had to pass through roads where there were 20 feet high snow wall surrounding the highway . It reminded us of the song from the movie “Jab We met”. We had to halt our journey due to increase in the snow fall and diminishing light near Zingzingbar where we took shelter in a tent. In that extreme cold conditions we had a jolly time and feasted on egg omelet & hot tea .During night our guys tried their hands at cooking & our tent owner was resting. During nights the winds were gushing wildly & temperatures had dropped below (-5) degrees with heavy snowfall, in these extreme conditions we were sound asleep.

We were aghast to see our bikes fully covered in snow when we got out of our tent in the morning. Our bikes were snow clad with a layer of 8 inches of snow. It was etched in our mind for ever. We had a very unique experience of doing our morning chores in that area with snow as the water was freezing cold. This was first of its kind experience in our trekking life. We started to leave our tents in the morning to continue our journey but my friends had to toil very hard to start their bikes, in that respect I was blessed as my bike ‘Bajaj Caliber’ started in just 1 kick. My bike ‘Bajaj Caliber’ was oldest of them all & had completed 100,000 Km in November 2008. After struggling a bit all the Bajaj bikes started but one of our friend had a hard time starting his ‘Yamaha Gladiator’ bike .After pushing the bike for few Km and after changing the spark plug of that bike, to our relief it started. It is advisable to avoid adulterated petrol which is sold on the Leh- Manali Highway. After crossing through world’s worst road ‘Rohtang Pass’ we reached Manali at night.

Way to Rohtang Pass, Manali in Himachal Pradesh

2012

Himalayas project.

All roads lead to mountains only ;-)

Way to Rohtang Pass, Manali in Himachal Pradesh

The deadly road Leh - Manali. Just minutes before Rohtang Pass (3979 m). And they call it highway, lol!

Rohtang Pass, One of the heighest mountain pass in Himachal Pradesh. Height 3,978 m

Rohtang Pass. Livelihood of the local people depend on tourists. They setup tea stalls like these and use horses to ferry tourists to higher places. For some reason authorities don't allow the locals to put up these small stalls at Rohtang Pass. So they work as salaried workers for others on these shops. A hot cup of tea in the cold weather is what the tourists need at this place and authorities should encourage facilities to keep a balance between helping locals earn, provide facilities to tourists and keeping the area pollution free. Blogpost coming up soon with more photos from the trip.

Nullah north of Rohtang Pass - Manali to Leh road (India)

Nullahs are water streams crossing over the road, usually near passes. They grow larger in the afternoon, with the sun melting the snow, and they can be dangerous.

Rohtang Pass ( 13050 feet ) - An Aerial View

The image brings alive the stark beauty of Rohtang Pass as seen and shot from a chopper during winters.

This is an old trading route , which connected Kullu Valley with Lahaul and Leh. It has a well deserved reputation for unpredictable and hostile weather that includes blizzards . It is only accessible between May and beginning of Nov .

Rohtang Pass is an adventurer's dream destination, situated at an altitude of about 4000 metres (13050 ft), this pass is the gateway to the Lahual region from Manali.

Bikers making their way up Rohtang Pass. Lahaul and Spiti are popular motorcycle destinations. So along with all the buses, goods carriers, jeeps, taxis, occasional hatchback, and military vehicles/convoys, you also see large groups of bikers. Rohtang Pass - Himachal Pradesh

Our first stop after leaving Manali on the 2 day journey to Leh. At an altitude of 3,978 m or 13,051 ft, the pass is usually only open from May to October. A tunnel is being currently built through the mountain range to provide all year round access to the Lahaul District on the other side of the pass
