Dhankar Monastery stands perched on top of a hill, in a dilapadated condition. Erosion swiftly carries away the very ground it stands on. It is estimated that in another twenty years, the monastery will be gone.

Stark and treeless. Peaks and glaciers. Shot at 13000ft. Please view close.

Rohtang Pass (13050 feet)is a mountain pass in the Pir Panjal Range of the Himalayas. The name Rohtang means " Mound of corpses" in the local Bhoti language. Although the altitude of this pass is not very high as compared to other passes in the Himalayas, many people have lost their lives in crossing this pass due to its unpredictable weather. This pass connects the lush and idyllic Kullu valley to the arid and harsh Lahaul & Spiti valley in the state of Himachal Pradesh in India. The mountain ranges in this photo are in Lahaul valley. The River Beas has its origin on the southern side of this pass. This is the first pass one has to cross while driving from Manali to Ladakh. It is approx.50 kms from Manali.

The famed Rohtang Pass(ht-13050feet) formed a historically significant connect between kullu valley and the twin valleys of Lahoul and Spiti in the western Himalayas. This connect was significant as it was an important" link to the Silk Route".

Horse mounted traders from Punjab would ply their wares through this route

to reach Leh and beyond. The Indians would trade in precious stones for the Chinese Silk,Pashmina, horses, carpets, and also opium.

My forefathers from Hoshiarpur(Punjab) in the 1870s were amongst the early pioneers to trade on this route.

The ancient name of kullu is Kulanthapitha and literally translates into "the end of the habitable world.Been on this pass a number of times. And it certainly evokes this feeling of looking at the end of the habitable world. It also conjures up images of Central Asia.

Shown in the image is the western face of the mighty Rohtang Pass at last light.

On my way back to Manali from Losar, Kunzum pass had its first snow of the season. The pass remained closed for more than 4 hours. Vehicles piled up, and it was only with a lot of difficulty that the pass was opened.

I was hitch-hiking with a family that was travelling on a Chevrolet SUV. This was photograph taken through the rear window.

This is an overview of Marhi,a small stopver enroute Rohtang Pass.

Tourists indulge in adventure activities like para-gliding from this place. The tandem joy rides offer spectacular valley views.

The rest house on the top part of the frame is an excellent choice for those wishing to stay for a night.

Snapped it while returning from Rohtang Pass with my family.

Shot taken during the drive over mighty Rohtang.

It was a February day while we were visiting Gulaba ! The temperature was as always below average, with snow everywhere atmosphere ! The Rohtang Pass was about 20 KMs from here & due to exceptional snowfall last night the car roads remained closed after Gulaba ! But we started to walk uphill & climbed more or less 5-6 KMs to the deeper snow point ! This was one of the best image of sky touching snow covered mountains ever I witnessed till date.. :)

Sometimes you don't like a particular shot as soon as you shoot it. However after may be 6 months or so when you start going through your archives, you find something which you start liking and then you try to process it again.

One such shot which was clicked long back using a 5MP PnS when I had no idea about photography (not sure if I know anything right now as well). This was on my archives for a long time so thought about re-processing it. I hope that I did justice with it.
