Place - On the way towards the Rohtang Pass ahead of Marhi, Himachal Pradesh, India
Our car had got stranded in a huge jam on our journey to the Rohtang Pass this June when I took this snap. I was fascinated by the wide distribution of bright and dark tones and the cool blues and greens in Nature that was on offer to be photographed. The lush green patch of land in the foreground is a paradise for paragliders.
The three daughters of my very warm Spitian host - Dorje. The two younger ones , always willing to be photographed, while the elder one, in the background, a little shy.
A hearth in the centre of a living room warms it in traditional Spitian architecture.
Dorje and his family are amongst the most warm people I've ever met.
I wish all my Flickr friends a Very Happy,Healthy & Prosperous New Year.
Thank you for being my friends and all your encouragement and support.

Beautiful looking clouds above snow covered ranges of mighty Himalayas ! The Rohtang Pass was about 20 KMs from here & due to exceptional snowfall last night the car roads remained closed after Gulaba ! But we started to walk uphill & climbed more or less 5-6 KMs to the deeper snow point & got this image !
Location : Gulaba, Himachal Pradesh, India.

Hit "L" and view those continuous curved roads of "Rohtang" down below..
Rohtang means 'pile of corpses',due to people dying in bad weather trying to cross the pass) (altitude 13,050 ft or 3,980 m), is a high mountain pass on the eastern Pir Panjal Range of the Himalayas around 51 km (32 mi) from Manali. It connects the Kullu Valley with the Lahaul and Spiti Valleys of Himachal Pradesh, India. Manali-Leh Highway, a part of NH 21, transverses Rohtang Pass.
Gulaba is the gateway of Rohtang pass since years ! The distance from Gulaba to Rohtang Pass is mere 50 KMs ! Snow remains there all through the year ! When Rohtang pass remain closed (This is due to heavy snowfall, landslides & tough roads), Gulaba becoms the snow point for the tourists !
In this photo one can see the zigzag roads going towards Rohtang Pass ! Which is situated 4000 meters above sea level !
About Gulaba : Gulaba is known as the snow line. It is visual treat with snow clad mountains all around and beautiful hide and seek of sun and the cloud. When the Rotang pass is closed in winter season this is a good place to enjoy snow. Gulaba is a village 6 KM away from Rohtang pass. It is about 4,000 metres above the sea level. During the 6 months from November to May/June when Rohtang is inaccessible due to snow, all the skiing and winter sports are held at Gulaba. For those who want to enjoy the snow without skiing, the upper slopes at Gulaba are peaceful and steep enough just to go up and slide down. Solang valley is 4 km off the way to Gulaba. Gulaba is 4-5 kms from Kothi, Gulaba has snow almost all year.

Manali lies at around 1,800m (6,000ft) altitude. The Rohtang Pass at 3,978m (13,000ft) is the first of four major passes on the Manali to Ley Highway. It is closed by snow for around 6 months of the year from October to March, sometimes longer. When we visited in October we could drive up to about 3,300m (11,000ft) before hitting the snowline. This trip wetted my appetite to see more of this region and three years later in 2001 myself and three friends cycled the 300 mile Manali to Ley Highway reaching a maximum altitude of 5,350m (17,550ft) on the Taglang La.

Couple of years back, while going to Rohtang Pass,I noticed a lone shepherd standing on the edges of a rock,over-looking his flock of sheep which was grazing just below the rock.
I seized this opportunity of getting him silhouetted against the ranges in the backdrop.
