These two men helped us every time we got stuck going over Rohtang Pass. I don't know how many times they saved us.

Manali lies at around 1,800m (6,000ft) altitude. The Rohtang Pass at 3,978m (13,000ft) is the first of four major passes on the Manali to Ley Highway. It is closed by snow for around 6 months of the year from October to March, sometimes longer. When we visited in October we could drive up to about 3,300m (11,000ft) before hitting the snowline. This trip wetted my appetite to see more of this region and three years later in 2001 myself and three friends cycled the 300 mile Manali to Ley Highway reaching a maximum altitude of 5,350m (17,550ft) on the Taglang La.

Rohtang Pass - Himachal Pradesh - India

Ready for ice skating

Just for a change from routine macro.

I saw this kid in a food-stall on the way to Leh from Manali somewhere near Rohtang pass. With his naughty playfulness he was attracting every tourist there while his father was busily catering to the needs of the customers. This was two years back and I think in a few years he must be able to run the shop on his own !!!

Have a good day friends !!!

Friends, since I'm a little busy now I could not visit your streams and I hope I'll join you soon !!!

Our first night's stop at 3,355m / 11,000ft, about 3/4 the way up the Rohtang Pass after a 38km / 23 mile climb from Manali.

Rohtang:

Clouds, rain, and winter snow-storms often sweep over the Pir Panjal range here, and it isn't unusual to encounter bad weather on Rohtang Pass. (We were in cloud on the south side). In the past, the threat of sudden blizzards and avalanches were perhaps more real and caused many deaths. Not for nothing did the pass come to be called Rohtang which is Tibetan meaning "pile of corpses". But we drove in comfort.

At top of the pass, Buddhist prayer flags flutter in the wind, and in the distance can be seen a line of snow-capped peaks of the Lahaul mountains. The twin peaks dominating are the 6000m/19,700ft plus Gyephang (Ghepan) pinnacles.

The Rohtang at 13,050 ft is the lowest of the four major passes on the road to/from Ladakh.

The subsequent new tunnel under the Rohtang is now called the Atal Tunnel.

While Traveling to Manali-Leh..1st pass come on way which is knwn by Rohtang pass..

one Guy was sitting on the floor and enjoying beauty of himalaya.. about Rohtang pass

The pass is open from May to November. It was not particularly high or difficult to cross on foot by Himalayan standards, but it had a well-deserved reputation for being dangerous because of unpredictable snowstorms and blizzards.[3] Some linguists say that the name "rohtang" is a Persian word meaning pile of dead bodies[citation needed].

This pass was ancient trade route between the people on either side of Pir Panjal. The local name for this pass is a generic name of pass.[citation needed] There are many other passes in Lahoul and Spitti which have specific names (Kunzom La, Bara Lachala, etc.). This is suggestive of the fact that this must have been the oldest and most frequented pass in the region, or the fact that it is the main pass leading from one cultural region (Indian) to another, quite different one, to the north.

The road through the Kullu Valley, past Manali and over the Rohtang Pass to Keylong, and Lahul and on to Ladakh, has become very busy during the summer months as an alternate a military route following the Kargil Conflict in 1999 in addition to tensions in Kashmir. Traffic jams are common as military vehicles, trucks, and goods carriers try to navigate the tight roads and rough terrain, compounded by, snow and ice at certain points and the large number of tourists vehicles. There are a lot of 'dhabas' or Indian-style food shacks and eateries along the way.
