Rohtang Pass (elevation 3,978m or 13,050ft) is a high mountain pass on the Himalayas around 51 km from Manali. It connects the Kullu Valley with the Lahaul and Spiti Valleys of Himachal Pradesh. The pass stays open from May to November.
Manali lies at around 1,800m (6,000ft) altitude. The Rohtang Pass at 3,978m (13,000ft) is the first of four major passes on the Manali to Ley Highway. It is closed by snow for around 6 months of the year from October to March, sometimes longer. When we visited in October we could drive up to about 3,300m (11,000ft) before hitting the snowline. This trip wetted my appetite to see more of this region and three years later in 2001 myself and three friends cycled the 300 mile Manali to Ley Highway reaching a maximum altitude of 5,350m (17,550ft) on the Taglang La.
just before crossing the 4000m high Rohtang Pass...this is where Phase 1 of the journey ends.
Geologically, this is like a wall of high peaks (unfortunately all cloud covered), and once over this pass, we start entering a rain shadow area...the greens get barren...and the high altitude strong sun seems to have burnt the mountains into a golden brown...from here on we start to 'Enter the Golden Lands'...phase 2 of the journey begins...we will be on some of the world's highest roads!

Hanuman Tibba ( 5892m ) - The highest peak of Dhauladhar range.
Also konwn as Solang Weissorn , it was first scaled in 1912 (exactly a century ago) by Gen C .G Bruce's chief swiss guide - Henrich Fuhrer and a gurkha soldier Lal Bahadur. This party and their english employers also made the first exploratory ventures towards Indrasan ( then nameless ) and Deo Tibba. Hanuman Tibba was not climbed again until 1966 (Joint Indo -British expedition under R.G Petigrew.)

Himalayas project.
