Filled with cargo and 150 people (including many librarians for the Library of Michigan's Loleta Fyan Small and Rural Library Conference at the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island). We took the barge Sacre Bleu and the staff at Shepler's did a great job given the ice and the conditions. With Coast Guard approval, they even created more seats on the Sacre Bleu. I rode on the deck and it was a blast!
Walled garden volunteer pruning a couple of vigorous climbing roses [ she has my utmost sympathy - we used to have an old French rambler at the back of our house - Adelaide d'Orleans. The label said it reached 15 feet. After it had made 30 feet and was on its way to the house next door we decided to call a halt to its territorial expansion. Completely. Ever seen Rosa Kifsgate ? ]
LTG Mike Ferriter, commanding general of the U.S. Army Installation Management Command, joined leaders headquartered in San Antonio from the other four armed services on military appreciation night at the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo Feb. 22. Ferriter, and IMCOM CSM Earl Rice, used the opportunity to strengthen the command's relationship with local leaders.
They joined Air Force LTG Douglas Owens, vice commander of AETC, Rear Admiral William Roberts, commandant of METC, Coast Guard Commander Gene Anzano, of the USCG Cryptologic Unit, and Marine LTC Robert Bruce Sotire, USMC Battalion instructor/inspector.
The military leaders were hosted by retired Air Force Col. Clarence "Buster" Horlen, director of ticketing for the rodeo.
Visitors included Rodeo Executive Committee president Joe E. Hutchison, and vice presidents Joe Soules, Jackie Van De Walle, Brenda Harris and Barbie Puckett Todd.
They were also visited by the rodeo clowns, bullfighters Travis Adams, Clay Collins and Cody Webster, and barrelman Leon Coffee.

Berners Roding, Essex
Abandoned and derelict church on the remote Berners Hall estate.
In 1911, my great-great-aunt Julia Mortlock was a cook at Berners Hall. By then, it was inhabited by James, Charles and Caroline Glasse, two brothers and a sister from Morwenstowe in Cornwall. There was only one other servant. By 1919, the farm had been sold to the Co-op, who still own it today. I believe the grounds have a famous carp lake.
