Walled garden volunteer pruning a couple of vigorous climbing roses [ she has my utmost sympathy - we used to have an old French rambler at the back of our house - Adelaide d'Orleans. The label said it reached 15 feet. After it had made 30 feet and was on its way to the house next door we decided to call a halt to its territorial expansion. Completely. Ever seen Rosa Kifsgate ? ]

A 3 day ride to raise money for the mental health awareness charity Mind, on 100 year old bicycles, roughly following the old Bordeaux-Paris cycle race route.

Our arrival in Angoulême on Friday coincided with the Circuit Des Remparts held there that weekend.

We set off from the Montlhery Circuit near Paris on Tuesday afternoon, but a mechanical problem early on with my front wheel bearings set us back a couple of hours, and we only made it to Orleans at midnight. Once the sun had set it was bitterly cold, and we only had wool shorts and jerseys to ride in. Our mileage today was only 70 miles. Luckily Sorrel in our support vehicle had a motel room in Orleans.

Next day we headed out along the Loire river towards Tours. We made it to Amboise and then left the river and turned south. We made our second stop that evening at a lovely campsite just past of Loche, 104 miles.

Thursday we planned another big day, and hoped to break the back of the ride. The scenery was changing now, as were the roads, lots of gently undulating roads. We skirted around Poitiers, and made it to this evenings campsite just before dusk, after covering 95 miles today. That left just 38 miles to Angloumême, which we covered the next morning. It was getting increasingly warmer the further south we headed, 34 that afternoon!

We smashed out initial target of £300 and raised well over £1200 in the end, thank you so much to all our supporters along the way.

I did the ride on the 1925 Bruneau Durieux, single rear brake, with a single gear coaster hub. Ben rode the whole distance on the single fixed gear Tapon, pre WW1 racer.

The Tapon actually comes from Angoulême, sold by the Tapon Brothers there in about 1905. The ride was essentially a homecoming for Ben's bike.

Berners Roding, Essex

Abandoned and derelict church on the remote Berners Hall estate.

In 1911, my great-great-aunt Julia Mortlock was a cook at Berners Hall. By then, it was inhabited by James, Charles and Caroline Glasse, two brothers and a sister from Morwenstowe in Cornwall. There was only one other servant. By 1919, the farm had been sold to the Co-op, who still own it today. I believe the grounds have a famous carp lake.

A tremendously hard day for Scotland's Grant Ferguson who also rode the mountain bike event and finished fifth. Glasgow Commonwealth Games Road Race, 2014. Grant was the last member of the Scottish squad left with David Millar in the race. He dropped out on the second last lap and only David finished the race for the Scottish team. Now 2018 British national cyclo-cross champion and Scottish national hill-climb champion.

Sant Pere de Rodes appearing and disappearing in the mist. The monastery was built in the 10th and 11 century and dominates the valley. At the top of the hill you can just see Verdera Castle.

We braved the heat and rode to the event from Surly Brewing Company with The Current, Freewheel Bike, and 30 Days of Biking, admired and won ARTCRANK bike posters, and explored the culture of craft with The Growler. We made art and got safe with The Hub Bike Co-op safety checks and spin-a-paint, and rocked out to live music from Warehouse Eyes & Totally Awesome Summer.

We played #BikeNightMia Bingo struck a pose in the Nice Ride Minnesota photobooth and checked out the latest and greatest bike gear from Shinola, One on One Bicycle Studio, Handsome Cycles, and Cherry Cycles.

We also connected with the biking community from Minneapolis Bicycle Coalition, Open Streets Minneapolis, Midtown Greenway Coalition, MPLS Bike Love, Slow Roll Twin Cities, The My Bike Project, Major Taylor Bicycling Club of Minnesota, and Black Girls Do Bike; enjoyed the spectacle of Art Bikes of MN, and climbed on an old-fashioned high-wheel bike with the Cycling Museum of Minnesota.
