Juniperus squamata 'blue star' - Blue Star Juniper
Cotoneaster apiculatus 'tom thumb' - Tom Thumb Cotoneaster
This grouping of plants around the pond's edge for December. The cotoneaster stays nice into November and then has the bare, reddish branches one sees here.
Red sprite is a miniature form of the Michigan holly or winterberry, a deciduous native holly that grows in damp places.
Blue star juniper is a nice little compact form of the squamata juniper that ranges from blueish to shades of purple in the winter. The only drawback I have seen is the tendency to look less than happy in hot, humid weather and the somewhat brittle branches that can easily break if stepped on.

day 15 of the November photo challenge: pride. I inherited these from my grandpa D.O., my grandmother's second husband, who died several years ago. He was a doctor, a war hero, a mathematician, and a complete genius who somehow still found time to collect rock and mineral samples from all over the world. I am proud to have geological nerdery in common with him.

This neolithic burial chamber is located at Shilstone Farm, Drewsteignton. The capstone is estimated to weigh around 120 tons. It fell in 1862 and was re-erected in the same year.
It is the best example of this type of chambered tomb in Devon. Similar examples of dolmens or quoits can also be found in Cornwall.
My man dragged me up hill and down dale last week - over rock and tussock and all over the place. The consolation was that it was during The Golden Hour - the lighting was lovely! and so I got a couple of shots in.
There are some occasions when it can be nice to be the partner of a sufferer of GAS - Geocaching Addiction Syndrome...

Another female form discovered in the Karoo. This time shaped in solid rock.
This is what happens when the rock sheds a shell instead of splitting, showing the lighter inner texture.

New promos for Sam Russo. I'm in the process of editing them to look kinda worn as well as touching them up a bit and cropping.
More to come on Sam's Myspace in the next couple days.
Be sure to check him out. He's witty, gritty and soul filled acoustic punk.
