Another female form discovered in the Karoo. This time shaped in solid rock.
This is what happens when the rock sheds a shell instead of splitting, showing the lighter inner texture.
The Marlborough rock daisy or Pachystegia insignis is a plant equally at home in native, cottage and formal gardens.
A member of the asteraceae family of plants, this New Zealand native is a low-growing, hardy plant with spectacular white daisy-like flowers during summer and impressive seed heads in autumn. It looks especially good in mass plantings and in pots.
The Marlborough rock daisy thrives in full sun in well-drained soil and is often found in rocky coastal areas such as along the Kaikoura coastline.
Its leathery, green leaves with felted edges and undersides make it ideal for windy, coastal gardens and bluffs. It can withstand substantial drought but does better with adequate water.
Plants will grow in limey soil and are salt and frost resistant. The daisy can grow up to a metre high and a metre wide.

Newspaper Rock State Historic Monument is located in some 25 miles (40 km) north and west of Monticello in eastern Utah, western United States, and south and west of Moab. The Monument features a flat rock with one of the largest known collections of petroglyphs.
The petroglyphs were carved by Native Americans during both the prehistoric and historic periods. Some glyphs depict riders on horses. While precisely dating the rock carvings has been difficult, repatination of surface minerals reveals their relative ages. The reason for the large concentration of the petroglyphs is unclear, making the rock somewhat of a mystery.
The location is near a stream and trail in an area with long expanses of otherwise impassable vertical cliffs. The carved facet is located along State Route 211, the access road to Canyonlands National Park Needles District.

This is Umbrella Rock at Rock City Gardens in Chattanooga, Tennessee. There seems to be a whole lot of people who have this shot in their family albums. They were all taken from the same angle, and they were taken from the 1890's until the 1930's. I wish I knew the story behind that.
I think that this is my grandmother's sister and her family. I know that that little boy is well over 80 years old now, so this was probably taken in the middle to late twenties.

This photo was modified for submission in a Pentaxforums.com "Weekly Challenge" for photographs displaying selective color. I converted the image to black and white in Nik Software's Color Efex Pro 4.0. Then I used that software's negative control points to restore the leaf's color.

A spectacular lookout, with 1000' sheer drops on either side.
