Rock of Dunamaise
Majestically towering over the Laois countryside is the Rock of Dunamaise - the remains of a celtic fortification. This is one of Ireland's most famous landmarks and has a long and diverse history attached to it. Aoife, daughter of the King of Leinster received it as a part of her dowry on her marriage to Strongbow. The fort was also part of the O'Moore territory. It is a gathering point for the O'Lalor Clan Rally which takes place in October.
On evenings when the tide is low in Hillsborough Bay one is apt to see the Rock Troll of Ballast Point cutting his path across the shallows. You can barely make out the silhouette of his head, cap, beard and shoulders emerging from the surface of the waters. Sometimes as he walks against the flow of the water he appears to be standing in place and not moving at all. Have you seen the troll? If so, why not share your photos of him as well.

Bean curd rock (ToFu-Rock) is the greatest sea-erosion topography on the northeast coast 'Heping Island Geopark' which is in the Keelung city, Taiwan.
The Bass Rock is a massive crag rising out of the sea to a height of 350 feet and it is about a mile in circumference. Through the Rock, from the East to West, runs a natural tunnel, but this is not accessible except at low tide.
Halfway up the Rock stands the ruins of a Pre-Reformation Chapel which was dedicated to Saint Baldfred, and was consecrated in the year 1542. Saint Baldfred was said to have his cell on the Bass Rock, dying there about the year 606. The Bass has a long and varied history. It is mentioned in writings dating back to the region of Malcolm Canmore and the first recorded owner was Sir Robert Lauder, who was granted a character for it around 1316. This family (Lauder of Bass) retained ownership of the rock for hundreds of years and must have been connected with the erection of a Pre-Reformation Chapel which must be dedicated to St Balfred in 1542, as well as being responsible for the building of the fortress.
Earlier, in 1671, Charles I claimed the Bass as Royal Property and it was sold to the crown for the sum of £4,000 sterling by the then owner, Sir Alexander Ramsay of Abbotshall, Provost of Edinburgh. The bloody pages of the Bass Rock's history now unfold when, under another Lauder (dale) known as the Captain of the Bass, the fortress was turned into a prison for Presbyterian ministers. Between 1672 and 1688 some 40 political/religious prisoners died in the dungeons of the rock. In 1691 during the reign of William and Mary, a party of four Jacobite prisoners escaped from their cells and captured the fortress when all the garrison was engaged in unloading coal. For the next three years they held the Bass for the Old Pretender and defied all attempts by Government forces to retake it. Aided by supply ships from France, this unique quartet even carried out raids on the Fife and Lothian coasts! In 1694 a more effective blockage finally starved them into submission, but they negotiated favourable terms and walked out free men! The fortress continued as a State Prison until demolished seven years later. In 1706, the Bass was sold to Sir Hugh Dalrymple, whose descendants still own it.

One of my first views of the granite dome from inside Enchanted Rock State Park grounds.
Enchanted Rock State Natural Area was my second stop (I had briefly stopped at Balcones National Canyonlands earlier in the day) of a 5-day trip to the central Texas Hill Country in October, 2012. It is a 1,643 acre park with a distinctive 500-foot-high dome of pink granite, the second largest such formation in North America.
Designated a National Natural Landmark, Enchanted Rock is an impressive geological feature with an estimated age of one billion years, making it among the oldest exposed rock in North America.
Enchanted Rock is located 18 miles north of Fredericksburg on Ranch Road 965, about halfway between Llano and Fredericksburg in the Hill Country.
I didn't know before-hand that I was going there. I was driving south from Llano towards Fredericksburg on the hilly farm road and noticed a sign advising of the park. I turned west on on Ranch Rd. 965 for the 9-mile drive from that point to the park without knowing anything about it whatsoever.
About a mile before the entrance to the park I kept seeing views of the top of the pink granite dome. At that time I had no idea what it was and at first thought it was an area that had possibly been stripped of trees. I arrived at the park entrance just before the office closed about 4:30 pm. The evening shadows were already beginning to form so I did not have a lot of daylight left.
Another HDR, Spider Rock. Which with the harsh shadows works pretty well. Or would if the pictures were just a little better lined up -- even off the tripod, they managed to be ever so slightly misaligned.

This is Tororo Rock in Uganda just over the boder from Kenya my dad was stationed here with the army at the end of WW". They were training to be sent to the Pacific so they were all relieved when VJ came. To celebrate he bult a beacon at the top of the rock.

This is one of those barns that I got to somewhat late in the day and it didn't show up too well. I can't even determine all that it says on the roof. But alas, I took this photo 5 years ago and I haven't been back since, so at some point I need to upload what I have. It's facing southbound traffic on US62 about five miles north of Cynthiana in Harrison County, KY.
Wile I want to take a better photo of it someday, it is still another one to add to my online collection. This is the 75th different Rock City barn I have posted to flickr in my Rock City Barns set.
Sandstones and siltstones make up the multicolored layers at this outcrop within the Red Rock Canyon State Park. The park can be encountered not far from the northern terminus of California 14, before it turns into US 395. Geographycally, it lies between the edge of the Mojave desert and the big, southern bend of the Sierra Nevada.
Kern county, California
White Rock Bridge over the Pawcatuck River and the White Rock Canal. The bridge connected Westerly in Washington County, Rhode Island and Stonington, Connecticut. The bridge originally carried both highway and electric railway traffic on separate sides of the bridge using a common center truss. The highway portion of the bridge has been removed and a new adjacent concrete bridge now carries vehicles. The center span of the rail bridge is a 126 ft Pratt through truss.
The bridge was constructed in 1906 by the National Construction Company for the Norwich and Westerly Railway Company. Rail traffic was discontinued in 1922.
