Balanced Rock at Arches National Park. According to the guidebook, it weighs as much as 1,600 full size cars! Estimated at 3,577 tons!
This is another attempt at capturing this interesting rock at night. Nestled along Badwater Road in plain sight near Mars Hill is a strange chunk of eroded basalt known as Mushroom Rock. At one point it had its own parking area and was listed on AAA’s 49 points of interest in the park. Now it has dropped off the list after the constant attention caused numerous breaks, most of which were caused by people sadly. It’s still a rock I find very interesting. Aeolian processes have smoothed the surface of this ventifact as wind borne particles slowly blast the surface. One 43 minute exposure. In this case the color of the scene was not adding to anything, and I like a black and white rendering much better. The lights in the distance are from Furnace Creek.
This is at the mysterious Dunino Den in Fife.
I made a wee video of the place which can be seen here;
someone has painted rocks and put them around the area, but someone else is picking them up and taking them home. I miss them.

My original photo of these rocks near Hamningsberg in the north of Norway did have a plain white sky. I thought that they deserved something a bit more dramatic.

Series of five. Very windy day, with some sunny spells. I had already planned to visit the Cuckmere Haven hoping it was not too flooded. A small flock of Rock Pipits were foraging in the shallow pools and soggy grass and one found an earwig (when did you last see an earwig?) They always seem to find interesting food, last time it was a moth!
