some seabirds 'rocking' out in the surf on a sunny afternoon at North Berwick, rather appropriately they are basking right below the site of the Scottish Seabird Centre :-)

Another sunrise image from northern part of Bundjalung National Park, NSW featuring coffee rocks - rock like formation originated from sediments of the ancient rivers.

Welstor rock (the thing in the distance) on Welstor Common, taken just after sunrise against a stormy sky. I thought that the foreground stone made a good lead in and, strangely, it didn't work if I stood the other side and had it pointing towards the main rock.

Gold Rock Beach, on Grand Bahama Island, is part of The Lucayan National Park and is protected by the Bahamas National Trust, this spectacular park was the filming site of Pirates of the Caribbean II and III.

The beach is located about 25 miles from Freeport and is secluded and it's very spectacular. At low tide, the shoreline of the beach spans for almost 1km into the sea, and it is referred to as Grand Bahama Island's "welcome mat."

You can also see in this picture, part of the Caribbean Pine. It inhabits tropical and subtropical coniferous forests, which include both lowland savannas and montane forests. Wildfire plays a major role limiting the range of this species, but it has been reported that this tree regenerates quickly and aggressively.

How did this amazing sphere of granite form? It sits precariously on a narrow pedestal of rock in the Sierra national forest, in easy view of the road along northern portion of the Sierra Vista National Scenic Byway.

It's not a glacial erratic, the guidebook says, because it has the same mineral composition (granodiorite) as the bedrock underneath it. There's continuous feldspar between the base and the globe, too.

Was it carved by humans? There are rock spheres in the jungles of Costa Rica of comparable size that are considered pre-Columbian sculptures. This one, though, is not as perfect; its shape is oblate and irregular. No native Americans of the area were known to make such sculptures, either. So we can dismiss a design inference.

The guidebook explains, "the sphere is the product of erosion along joints and cracks, coupled with thousands of years of weathering." Pretty neat result.

An old photograph appears to show Teddy Roosevelt in a party on horseback by this rock in 1903, but there is some doubt about whether it was Roosevelt or someone else resembling him. He was in Yosemite in May of that year but probably too far away for a ride to Globe Rock, and no documents record a visit by him. It's possible, though.

My girlfriend Lesley and I were on a excursion from Birmingham to Penzance, 46053 there and back it was a lovely sunny day I photographed at Penzance and Long Rock , 1022 1028 1033 1065 1068 1069 1070 47080 47101 47229 47239 46014 46017 25306 50003 08840 08954 were seen that enjoyable day and I photographed most of them, plus a day at the seaside, Class 46 46014 Long Rock. We had traveled overnight on compartment stock and managed to get one to ourselves, { complete with steam heat] it was a great trip. O happy days KC. 31/03/1975.

A Providence and Worcester Railroad extra crew has 79 loaded tank cars of ethanol and two spacers headed south destined for the Shell tank farm at the port of Providence, Rhode Island. PW 3909 (GE B39-8E originally blt. Dec. 1987 as LMX 8535) and sisters 3910, 3904, 3903 are leaning into the curve with the heavy train approaching the Riverdale Street crossing at about MP 29.5. The siding in the foreground serves Riverdale Mills, a maker of wire mesh products and inventor of the coated welded wire lobster trap. While Riverdale is only a bit over 40 years old, it is housed in a repurposed mill made of stone and brick whose oldest portion was constructed in 1852 and made scythes and then bayonets during the Civil War until being expanded after 1865 and changed into a textile mill which closed after 1923. It had long since been vacant when it was purchased in 1979 and refurbished as the manufacturing site of the upstart wire mesh business.

This image is from when I was walking along Low Hauxley. This was for my photography exam at A-level based on the word 'sublime'. Loved the strong reflection of the rock in the water.

I was surprised to be the only one in this location behind the bus garage as the CRSA special made its way across the curved bridge over the Rock River in downtown Janesville on 5-7-14. Most fans shot this train on its approach to the bridge, with Tom Williams getting a more broadside shot from the nearby bike path.
