Mahamuni Temple in Mandalay, Myanmar, stands as a venerable symbol of Buddhist devotion. Constructed in 1784, it houses the highly revered Mahamuni Buddha image, believed to bear the imprint of Gautama Buddha himself. This sacred site has endured centuries, surviving wars and conflicts. Pilgrims flock to witness daily rituals, including the application of gold leaf to the revered Buddha, a testament to the unwavering reverence bestowed upon this iconic figure. The temple's historical significance and spiritual aura make it a pivotal center of worship and a cultural treasure, contributing to the rich tapestry of Myanmar's religious heritage.

“I can see the way you look at me
You can't see beyond the veil
I can tell the way you run from me
I'm not your perfect fairy tale
Watch me burn
Can you feel me
Watch as I turn
What do you see
Conflicted by your hurt
So let me share your pain
Convicted for my church
I was born in flames
Addicted to my fate
Watch as I devour
Convicted for my faith
This is the Witching Hour”

Reaching Col de Furfande mid-morning during my Tour du Queyras trek, I was greeted by this extraordinary panorama under perfect clear skies. The timing proved ideal - the morning light had climbed high enough to illuminate the entire landscape, revealing every geological detail with remarkable clarity.
My intention was to capture the full grandeur of this legendary viewpoint that hikers speak of with reverence. From this elevated perch, the entire complexity of Queyras unfolds: the dramatic succession of limestone ridges in warm earth tones, the deep forested valleys creating dark contrasts, and the distant peaks fading into soft blue horizons. The panoramic format was essential to convey the 360-degree spectacle that makes Col de Furfande one of the Tour's most celebrated passages.
What captivated me was how this vantage point offers a perfect reading of the region's geology - each layer of rock, each fold in the terrain tells millions of years of Earth's history. Standing here, you understand why crossing mountain passes has always been both challenge and revelation for those who venture into high places.
This image celebrates that perfect convergence of effort and reward that defines great mountain trekking - the satisfaction of reaching a col and discovering views that exceed all expectations.
I first conceptualized this shot in June 2014, when I first started Nightscape Astrophotography. The first panorama with a specific composition that I envisioned in my head. The Waxing Crescent Moon setting between Sugarloaf Rock with the Milky Way just above. A shot that is only possible 2 weeks in the year.
I have been to Sugarloaf Rock every year since 2014 in attempts to capture this scene. Bad weather, cloud cover, other photographers and poor planning resulted in failure 3 years in a row. On the 4th year, September 2018, I saw an opportunity to capture a scene that has become somewhat of an obsession.
An amalgamation of everything I've learnt in my career as a Nightscape Astrophotographer, this shot, to me, is my most significant. Planning, understanding, perseverance, persistence and, most importantly, good luck have finally allowed me to put this scene to rest.
I have finally captured the first composition I ever dreamt of.

There's a reverence to evergreen trees. Hard to explain but they make me feel different than other trees. I notice this especially in pine lands where I'm completely surrounded by them. I wandered into a abandoned Christmas tree farm once. It was a very eerie experience. I came upon row after row of outgrown Christmas trees. Sound was deadened once I passed the first row. Not all sound but only the ones I associated with living. Inside the pine forest sound was hushed and sort of whispery. The sound of wind passing through many pine boughs. And so much movement as the boughs swayed in the wind. And it feels as if pine is all you can see as the boughs extend right down to ground level, unlike hardwood trees. It really heightens the feeling off confinement. There's a copse of pine trees in one corner of the village cemetery. They harbor shade and that sense of enclosure even on bright sunny days. It simply feels different entering this section than anywhere else in the cemetery. The trees add a sense of solemnity to an already very sad landscape. I come here often just to stand and absorb the energy. Other times I'm inspired to capture some sort of visual record. It's usually an abject failure as the feelings far exceed my ability to convey them with a camera. But sometimes there's a momentary thinning of the veil. It's like capturing a photo of a ghost; perhaps more a matter of belief than the actual reality.

The Old Jewish Cemetery, Prague, Czech Republic. “Old Jewish Cemetery is the largest Jewish cemetery in Europe and one of the most important Jewish historical monuments in Prague. It served its purpose from the first half of 15th century till 1786.” I had wanted to visit this remarkable cemetery for many years because of its incredible history. “During the more than three centuries in which it was in active use, the cemetery continually struggled with the lack of space. Piety and respect for the deceased ancestors does not allow the Jews to abolish old graves. Only occasionally the Jewish Community was allowed to purchase grounds to expand the cemetery and so many times it had to gain space in other ways; if necessary, a new layer of soil was heaped up on the available area. For this reason, there are places where as many as twelve layers now exist. Thanks to this solution the older graves themselves remained intact. However, as new levels were added it was necessary either to lay over the gravestones associated with the older (and lower) graves to protect them, or else to elevate the stones to the new, higher surface. This explains the dense forest of gravestones that one sees today; many of them commemorate an individual who is buried several layers further down.”
Giant sequoia (Sequoiadendron giganteum) are the largest trees in the world – and they grow naturally only in groves on the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California. They reach height of over 80m (270ft), with the girth at the ground level over 30m (100ft). Some specimen are around 3,000 years old or even older. They are so old they were mature even before Rome was founded in 753 BC! No wonder these venerable living giants command awe and respect – even reverence. This couple in Sequoia National Park seems to experience just that.
When footlights dim in reverence to prescient passion forewarned
My audience leaves the stage, floating ahead perfumed shift
Within the stammering silence, the face that launched a thousand frames
Betrayed by a porcelain tear, a stained career
You played this scene before, you played this scene before
I the mote in your eye, I the mote in your eye
A misplaced reaction
The darkroom unleashes imagination in pornographic images
In which you will always be the star, always be the star, untouchable
Unapproachable, constant in the darkness
Nursing an erection, a misplaced reaction
With no flower to place before this gravestone
And the walls become enticingly newspaper thin
But that would be developing the negative view
And you have to be exposed in voyeuristic colour
The public act, let you model your shame
On the mannequin catwalk, catwalk
Let the cats walk, and the cat walks
I've played this scene before, I've played this scene before
I the mote in your eye, I the mote in your eye
A misplaced reaction, satisfaction
You can't brush me under the carpet, you can't hide me under the stairs
The custodian of your private fears, your leading actor of yesteryear
Who as you crawled out of the alleys of obscurity
Sentenced to rejection in the morass of anonymity
You who I directed with lovers will, you who I let hypnotise the lens
You who I let bathe in the spotlights glare
You who wiped me from your memory like a greasepaint mask
Just like a greasepaint mask
But now I'm the snake in the grass, the ghost of film reels past
I'm the producer of your nightmare and the performance has just begun
It's just begun
Your perimeter of courtiers jerk like celluloid puppets
As you stutter paralysed with rabbits eyes, searing the shadows
Flooding the wings, to pluck elusive salvation from the understudy's lips
Retrieve the soliloquy, maintain the obituary
My cue line in the last act and you wait in silent solitude
Waiting for the prompt, waiting for the prompt
You've played this scene before

Truth be told, there are still too many images from this time of haunting...but I couldn't move on without posting these two...
I am, and will forever be, haunted by waters...
St Joseph's Church, San Antonio, Texas, USA. Built in 1868 by German speaking Catholics. Old by American history, but nothing compared to other historical churches around the world.
Reverence to this jewel of the forest...how not to bow before such beauty. Lady's-slipper, this queen of the undergrowth... spectacular purple inflorescence well erected among this carpet of moss and ferns. Lady's slipper. Steady lady's-slipper. Portneuf, Quebec, Canada.
Caught in that fleeting moment where the golden desert light meets the icy peaks of the La Sals.
This view from Arches National Park reminds me how wild, contrasting, and humbling the desert can be.
Shot just as the sun dipped low, giving the sandstone its richest hues and casting deep shadows between these stoic formations.
The mountains in the distance seem like a completely different world—and yet here they are, sharing the same breath of light.
