Spring passes and one remembers one's innocence

Summer passes and one remembers one's exuberance

Autumn passes and one remembers one's reverence

Winter passes and one remembers one's perseverance.

A moment at Glacier National Park that I will remember and cherish for the rest of my life. Mike Ryan and I were treated to an unbelievable sunrise on this day which left us in complete awe. Red Eagle Mountain and Mahtotopa Mountain are smothered in the glow of light to the left. Little Chief Mountain dominates in the middle and a good portion of Citadel Peak is on the right side of the frame. I can't say enough about the beauty of this park and when combined with light it is off the charts.

Back in the VIlle for the fall colors. KY does not disappoint.

North Devon sunset

Two "elders" of the Boulder Valley--an old, graceful Cottonwood tree and Haystack Mountain.

Viewed from other angles, Haystack mountain is dwarfed by the Rocky Mountain foothills that loom up behind it to the west. So it is not obvious and it can be a little difficult to spot. From this angle, however, it stands out nicely and is beautifully symmetrical. I was tempted to include "Haystack-san" in the title as a reference to beautiful Mount Fuji, often called "Fuji-san" by the Japanese.

In the 1850s, it was beneath Haystack Mountain that the Arapahoe Indians, led by Chief Niwot, set up their winter camp. Legend has it that Chief Niwot was buried at the top of Haystack, the mountain he so loved.

I came upon this beautiful blue hour scene quite unexpectedly, when I was teaching my nephew how to drive a manual transmission car on the extensive dirt roads north of Boulder.

10 year anniversary of my digital photography.

When the mountains call us, we should make our way there, because our souls need the peace and solitude that prevails on such places. That's how I experience it again and again when I'm allowed to be on the top of the world. In our hectic and fast-moving world, it is important not to lose the connection to nature, otherwise we become alienated from it.

With my first real digital camera where you could change the lenses, I immediately set off to one of the highest and most impressive places in the world of the Swiss Alps, the Aletsch Glacier with its magnificent mountains. Here at this point I am in the middle of the giants of the Swiss mountains with many 4000m high peaks. I myself stand at about 3000 meters above sea level and look at the largest ice glacier from the Alps in Europe. The length of the glacier is 22.6 km, the area is given as 78.49 km². A gigantic ice surface that fascinated me from the first moment. The weather was very challenging on this autumn day in October, because the wind was very strong and the clouds only gave way to the sun for a very short time. It was all over just a few minutes later and the glacier with the beautiful mountains disappeared under a thick layer of fog and clouds. I was very lucky to be able to take at least these few pictures and I am very happy to present one of them to you here. Please excuse the somewhat poorer image quality, because I didn't had enough money for a better camera at that time. But I really wanted to share these fascinating moments on the roof of my beloved Switzerland with you and pull out some of my digital photography from my archive. I hope you enjoy the view over this spectacular landscape.

This picture here is not a photographic masterpiece at all, I simply had to be in the right place at the right time. Nothing else.

To the picture himself: Aletsch glacier in the Valais & Bernese Alps - Switzerland. The mountains in the Region of Valais are the highest in Switzerland. Not far from the Aletsch Glacier is the famous Matterhorn.

“May the sun bring you new energy by day, may the moon softly restore you by night, may the rain wash away your worries, may the breeze blow new strength into your being, may you walk gently through the world and know it's beauty all the days of your life.”

Milford Sound at sunset. There is something about this place that always leaves me in awe.

This is their temple, vaulted high,

And here we pause with reverent eye,

With silent tongue and awe-struck soul;

For here we sense life’s proper goal.

To be like these, straight, true and fine,

To make our world, like theirs, a shrine;

Sink down, O traveler, on your knees,

God stands before you in these trees.

~Joseph B. Strauss, from “The Redwoods,” 1932

Stout Grove, Jedediah Smith State Park.

Since Nick and I were going to drive to the Oregon coast on Friday anyway, we decided, "hey, why not tack on 8 extra hours of driving and go to the Redwoods?" So on Thursday we came home from work, slept the day away, and then took off a little before midnight for the Redwoods. Eight hours later, right about sunrise, we found ourselves all alone in this incredible grove of ancient Redwoods. It was humbling in the most wonderful way. A total of 16 hours of driving in one day was a bit much, but it was made all worth it in just a few minutes here with these giants.

This church is just down the hill from Sacré-Cœur.

It is quite a place.

While visiting Castlerigg stone circle it was interesting to watch how these ancient stones moved people to a place of respect, reverence and honoring the stones and ancestors. Witnessing this man with his head bowed and his hand on one of the standing stones honestly brought me to tears. This location is so incredibly beautiful. I'm not surprised how people when visiting now can still feel the energy of the rituals and celebrations that have happened withing these stones over the many thousands of years.

That's a wrap for the weekend. Another workweek lurking on the other side of a setting sun. Photo taken from Alum Creek Boat Club in Columbus Ohio.

The Cathedral of Orléans/France (the Sainte-Croix d'Orléans) offers a view to great arches, architecture and paintings. Pure silence.

Ok, just one more of the fabulous trip to Zimanga in South Africa last september. It isn't often that I come home with so many pictures that I like, but this trip certainly delivered!

We had been in the Lagoon hide all afternoon. Photographed beautiful birds up close and playing elephants in the distance and had a great time. There's hardly a second going by there without something happening.

All of a sudden a small family of Warthogs came happily trotting in. They drank a little and started frolicking around, seemingly without a care in the world.

Although these African piggies usually don't make for the most adorable pictures my heart skipped a beat when mom and baby struck this lovely pose, all the more because the beautiful Lebombo mountain range made for such a stunning backdrop.

Have a lovely sunny weekend everyone!!
