SlabTek is a structurally suspended foundation system in which a flat slab is poured on the ground and is then raised to a desired height by the patent-pending SlabTek lifting mechanisms. The slab is secured by several drilled concrete piers that reach the structurally stable soils beneath the surface soils.

I got my retainers this morning. I hope this photo isn't too icky for anyone.
On the day I got my braces off, they made the molds of my mouth for them, and I got to pick out what designs I wanted. You see, since most people getting retainers are of a different generation than I, cutesie designs are available. Apparently the younguns like that stuff.
You wouldn't even believe all the designs you can get. Here's my top retainer- it has a flower design on a green background. For some reason, the bottom one came out plain black. I thought I was getting some cool flames!
I had an exhausting but pretty good weekend. We had the step-kiddos, which always wears me out. Saturday was the oldest's Tang Soo Do test (a kind of Karate). It was okay- I didn't have to talk to their mom, though she decided to introduce herself to my mother, for some reason. The test took forever! We finally got out of there at 8pm and I took Mom and the kids out to get burgers afterwards.
Yesterday we went to the Hot Sauce Festival, which was soooo much fun, hot and exhausting. Amazingly, we had a bit better weather than we had the day of the Ice Cream Festival. ONLY in the 90s instead of the above 100's!!! We definitely felt some breezes during the day. We were there with the two step-kids, one girlfriend of a step kid, and the girlfriend's little brother. So there were six of us! Quite a crew.
I now have a fridge full of new and exciting hot sauce flavors.

After pulling the winding bar plate off, the retainer nut is a right-handed thread, removing counter-clockwise. I used regular retaining ring pliers to remove it, but be careful of slipping, there's nothing to keep you from scratching the cover.

Now you can rotate the Speed Cam Retainer counter-clockwise to align the tabs with the slots in the bayonet.
Notice the little markings along the rim of the retainer. Those are the shutter speed marks, to help while working on the shutter in this state.
Standard Curb
Reclaimed standard curb from road improvement projects throughout New England. We always try to keep a good supply of first and second generation curb in stock.
Appearance:
First generation Curb. Late 1800’s – early 1900’s. All sides are split faced. Tops were dimpled or pointed for a more decorative look
Second Generation Curb. Tops were typically sawn. Undersides were still split faced. Typically more dimensional and better quality step material.
Size:
First Generation. The older style typically measures 7”-8” in thickness, 18” – 24” in depth and various lengths.
Second Generation. Usually has smaller measurements. Typically 6” in thickness and 16”-18” radius curb generally kept in stock.

Un-thread the recoil spring retainer cap.
CAUTION: The recoil spring IS under tension and will launch the tube and washer out of the assembly if not restricted.
Notice the slots on the face of the retainer, any metal sheet of suitable thickness can be used to un-thread this cap.
The Cap un-screws counter-clockwise while viewed from the front.
Make sure you control the cap when unscrewing.
I have found (especially for reassembly) that a large zip-lock baggie over the end of the shroud keeps the washer from being lost should you accidentally loose control of the spring.
This retainer wall and stone walkway show the back-side of a nature inspired water slide and jump rock that feed into a custom design pool.
This beautiful hawk had his early dinner right on the retainer wall in my backyard yesterday. I will not mention what it was. I was wishing I had my 300mm prime but had to use what was on my camera. He was there for about a minute. I had to shoot at ISO 1000 because of the fast dimming afternoon light. Handheld at 1/30 sec. Very grainy. Bird photographers will laugh at me...

Akō Castle was home to thew Asano clan during the Edo Period (1603-1868).
Oishi Kuranosuke was the chief retainer of the Asano clan during the turmoil associated with the 47 Ronin incident, in which the feudal lord, Asano Naganori, attacked and wounded Kira Yoshinaka within Edo Castle. As drawing a weapon within the shogun's castle was a capital offence, Asano was sentenced to commit seppuku the same day.
As a result of Asano's impulsive behavior, the Shogunate disbanded the Asano clan and seized their lands. Oishi and 46 other former Asano retainers waited and unleashed their misguided revenge on Kira, attacking his home in the dead of night in December 1703, killing his body guards as well as taking his head and placing it in front of Asano's tomb in Sengaku-ji Temple in Takanawa, Tokyo.
All the Akō ronin were sentenced to death by seppuku (harakiri). The loyalty that these guys showed to their foolish lord by committing what can only be described as what me and some of my friends referr to as a feudal "drive-by"- Japanese style, has been lauded by the Japanese public ever since. The facts behind the actual events have been buried in the countless puppet and kabuki plays as well as movies that have been made about this.
I'm not a terribly big fan of Asano Naganori, nor do I think the Akō ronin were particularly "brave" by carrying out a night attack after a party and fighting a small group of drunk bodyguards and taking the head of a feeble old man. But, this perspective is from modern, western eyes. In reality, night attacks of this nature have always been a staple of samurai warfare, being documented since the Heian period. As much as I don't partake in the 47 Ronin Kool Aid drinking parties, I do admit to enjoying watching a good fictional film or kabuki play about these guys.
