A modern rest area has opened 40 kilometres southeast of Merritt on Highway 97C at the Loon Lake Interchange. This “Class A” facility with running water and flush toilets features a contemporary design, separate parking locations for passenger, commercial and recreational vehicles, and landscaped outdoor areas including picnic tables. Electric car charging stations will also be installed this spring, and Loon Lake will be among eight rest areas wired for free Wi-Fi this year across the province, making the traveling experience better for British Columbians.

My wife and I stopped at the Interstate 40 NC Welcome Center on our way home from Tennessee. It had been raining but stopped long enough for me to take a few pictures. The I-40 rest area/visitor's center is very scenic.

Up North, even the rest areas along I-75 are scenic.

The 45th parallel...a degree marking the halfway point between the Equator and North Pole...manages to slice through Door County between Sturgeon Bay and Egg Harbor. This monumental rock stands at a wayside, alerting tourists and other motorists to this otherwise-invisible division of significance.

Juniperus chinensis Gold Lace - The feathery looking branches have a vibrant golden color. Plant it in a sunny spot and enjoy the bright sunny shrub that requires very little care. It is at a rest area along Interstate 81 in southern Virginia.

Prunus cerasifera - The leaves were broad and rounded at the base and tapering toward the end with smooth edges. From a distance the leaves looked maroon but were deep green when seen up-close. The trunk was rough and twisted. It was in a rest area along Interstate 81 in Virginia.

Iredell Rest Area construction

Okay, I have a thing for Rest Stop architecture. The ones in the majority of WV kinda immitate the rolling hills and blend into the atmosphere. Some of them have little woodland paths to hike down, or wooded picnic areas, they're really quite charming.

The original plan had been that I was gonna drive down to Florida and pick up Sam, but she ended up just getting a U-Haul and driving herself back, leaving me with a bad case of unfulfilled wanderlust.

But! I'm currently unemployed! So I have the freedom to just up and leave whenever I want (with the obvious caveat that money is an issue), so that's what I did.

(I'd actually planned to leave a day or so later, but Bridget indicated that she was annoyed with me and wanted me out of the house)

Rest area signs generally give distances to the next rest area. Signs on I-80 approaching the rest areas near Underwood go a step further and specify the distance to the next "modern" rest area (i.e., one with restrooms and other amenities as opposed to just parking). This one is on westbound I-80 — consider that the next rest area on westbound I-80 is in Nebraska.

For those that haven't been here in a while, it's been changed completely. It just opened a few weeks ago.

The Dwight D. Eisenhower National System of Interstate and Defense Highways, commonly called the Interstate Highway System, is a network of highways (also called expressways). The entire system, as of 2004, had a total length of 46,837 miles. While Interstate Highways usually receive substantial federal funding and comply with federal standards, they are owned, built, and operated by the states in which they are located. The system serves nearly all major U.S. cities. Unlike counterparts in most other industrialized countries, many Interstates pass through downtown areas, facilitating the emergence of automobile-oriented postwar suburban development patterns, a phenomenon also known as urban sprawl.

The interstate system was authorized by the Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1956, popularly known as the National Interstate and Defense Highways Act of 1956. It had been lobbied for by major U.S. automobile manufacturers and championed by President Dwight D. Eisenhower- who was influenced by both his experiences as a young soldier crossing the country in 1919 following the route of the Lincoln Highway and his appreciation of the German autobahn network - as a necessary component of a national defense system. It would be able to provide key ground transport of military supplies and troop deployments.

Initial federal planning for a nationwide highway system began in 1921 when the Bureau of Public Roads asked the Army to provide it with a list of roads it considered necessary for national defense, resulting in the Pershing Map. Later that decade, highways such as the New York parkway system had been built as part of local or state highway systems. As automotive traffic increased, planners saw a need for such an interconnected national system to supplement the existing, largely non-freeway, United States Numbered Highway system. By the late 1930s, planning had expanded to a system of new superhighways.

Although construction continues, the removal of the last traffic signal on Interstate 90 in Wallace, Idaho, on September 15, 1991 is often cited as the completion of the Interstate System. The initial cost estimate fwas $25 billion over twelve years; it ended up costing $114 billion and taking 35 years to complete

In 1924, by a system of stream diversions, dams, dykes, canals and pumps, 33,000 acres of fertile land were reclaimed from Sumas Lake. Few areas in B.C. have such rich soil with transportation and markets in close proximity. Produce of the mixed farming on this deep lake-bottom land is an important factor in the economy of our mountainous province. Taken stealthily because even though it was late at night the rest area wasn't empty. Though really, why I should care if strange women see me taking photos of hand dryers I do not know.

not really... it is Western Trillium (Trillium ovatum)

Liliaceae family

I was walking Rio across a very muddy wet lawn and slipped and fell, getting soaked with the muddy wetness... and thus I noticed thru the woods the low growing trilliums, so after rinsing off most of the mud I grabbed my camera and umbrella and went to play.... it was a lovely day! at least for mosses and trilliums!

For Monochrome Bokeh Thursday! I found a bunch of these when I stopped to stretch my legs at a Rest Stop in Glenwood Canyon along I-70 on my return trip from Western Colorado. Such interesting wildflowers (or weeds to some) don't you think?
