As you view the set you will see images of some of the key Nigerian priests (Babalawos) and Priestesses (Iyalawos) engaged in gaining national and international respect for this ancient religion. Variations of this religion are practiced through out West Africa and the Diaspora. I have named some of the individuals who I know have an international following. "Les autoroutes changent le visage de la France : artères économiques favorisant le développement industriel elles permettent de revitaliser des régions en perte de vitesse et de l'intégrer dans le mouvement général de l'expansion" Sur le plan européen elles vont combler le retard de la France et réaliser son insertion. Images de l'inauguration de l'autoroute entre Paris et Bruxelles par le président Georges Pompidou. Le reportage rappel que l'autre fonction capitale des autoroute est de favoriser la sécurité. By respected architect J McIntyre Henry, 1900-1904. 3-storey and basement Edwardian Palladian former County buildings on a key city centre site. Ashlar, with channelled rustication to ground. Angle Ionic pilasters. Gibbsian surrounds, alternate segmental-arched pediments. Some Venetian windows.
Lavishly decorated interior with many original features. Marble-pilastered entrance hall with timber columned screen. Wide stair with decorative metal balustrade and timber handrail leading to square, marble-floored upper hall with central viewing well and round-arched arcading with marble Ionic columns and pilasters. Coved ceiling with decorative carved frieze with Classical figures. Large barrel-vaulted room with richly decorative plasterwork to ceiling and dentilled cornice. Corniced walnut panelling with Corinthian pilasters and pedimented doorpiece. Windows with fluted Corinthian pilaster architraves. Other rooms with timber panelling, timber fire surrounds and overmantels. 6-panel timber doors throughout.
A richly decorated building situated in a prominent site in the city. Richly embellished, externally and internally. Of particular interest is the lavish Edwardian interior with its abundance of marble, fine plaster and timberwork. The romantic foliate and figurative iron balustrade to the principal staircase is particularly evocative of the period and of exceptionally high quality.
James McIntyre Henry (1852-1929) practised in Edinburgh and had commissions mostly in Edinburgh and the Lothians. His output included public buildings, churches and private houses.

And other gods of stone. Jizo is literally "Earth Womb," and they are associated with a Buddhist Boddhistatva and protector of children, and prebuddhist stone border gods of fertility. Jizo was the god at the border of the vilage. In that sense a sort of gate. There are more than 75 Jizo behind Rurikoji Temple and many more dotted around the city. I will upload their locations to timtak.com
They remind me of Filipino Bulul. The comparison between Jizo and Bulul, and their application in tourism would be worthy of study. I think that they make good souvenirs, mascots and that people might like to do a Jizo and or Bulul tour. Their red hats are photogenic.
There is still a strong tradition of praying to Jizo. Some of these had prayer mats and incense still burning. I have seen primary school children greet the Jizo as they walk past. Many of them have offerings of food and drinks and low value coins.
Not all of these are Jizo. Some are other objects of worship such as Sarutahiko and Kannon.
According to the Japanese wikipedia page the benefits of praying to Jizo are many:
Heaven and the dragon will protect you.
Your good karma will increase day by day.
The seeds of enlightenment will be collected in you.
You will not retreat from enlightenment.
You will not lack for clothes or food.
You will not catch plague.
You will avoid flood and fire.
You will avoid being stolen from.
People will look at you with respect.
Gods and Demons will protect you.
Women will turn into men. [That is what it says]
You will become a well bred young lady.
You will become beautiful
You will likely be reborn in Heaven.
Or You will be reborn as an emperor in this world.
You will know your past lives.
People will accede to your requests.
Your servants will be happy.
Things that don't make any sense will disappear.
Your bad Karma will be taken away.
You will be able to travel to far places safely.
You will see good dreams when asleep.
Your ancestors will be freed from suffering.
You will be reborn well.
All the saints will adore you.
You will become clear thinking and sharp.
You will have lots of compassion.

Adult content: While it is said that the hats are there due to a legend that an old couple were rewarded for clothing the Jizo who looked cold, there is another theory that it may also be because some of the stone, border gods are phallic and the hats may be hiding this. I have yet to find a Jizo with a cleft pate but I look.

Photograph taken at an altitude of One hundred and fifty one metres at 10.52am on Thursday May 9th 2024, ten miles East of Aberystwyth at Pontarfynach (The bridge on the Mynach), or Devil's Bridge as it is known. The village and community are in Ceredigion, where above the River Mynach is a series of three stacked bridges, constructed hundreds of years apart, from which the village gets its English name.
Here we see the base of one of the waterfalls fed by the Afom Rheidol.

It is modeled after the one that he had built for him at the then Mughal capital of Delhi. He had constructed a total of five such facilities at different locations, including the ones at Delhi and Jaipur. The Jaipur observatory is the largest of these.

La Suède débarque en force au Zenith de Paris en ce lundi soir. Et pour qui aime le death mélodique suédois, c'est une affiche de rêve à laquelle nous assistons. Il n'est donc pas surprenant de voir que la salle du parc de la Villette (même en petite configuration) affiche complet. Et pourtant, à l'heure où Pete Tägtgren et Hypocrisy montent sur les planches, la fosse tout comme les gradins restent encore clairesemés.
Hypocrisy
Il est surprenant de voir Hypocrisy à l'affiche de cette soirée, étant donné que le combo n'a rien sorti depuis 2013. D'ailleurs le trio (agrémenté de Tomas Elofsson à la six cordes en live) profite de ce set pour balayer l'ensemble de sa discographie sortie avant 2005. Si sur le papier un tel set donne envie, les conditions live ne permettent pas d'en profiter pleinement. Dans un premier temps, des fumigènes omniprésents masquent la visibilité des spectateurs et seules les silhouettes des musiciens se distinguent. Difficile dans ces conditions de se rendre compte du charisme de Pete Tägtgren, pourtant musicien et producteur éminemment respecté dans la scène metal.
De plus, la mise en son n'est pas des plus optimales. Une reverb désagréable est présente sur la voix et la caisse claire, tandis que la double-pédale de la batterie de Horgh (Immortal) brouille le spectre sonore. Cela n'aide évidemment pas les spectateurs à rentrer dans ce set et ce sont seulement des applaudissements polis que récoltent les quatre musiciens entre les titres.
Dommage qu'un groupe à la carrière aussi longue qu'Hypocrisy n'ait bénéficié que de conditions sonores et visuelles désastreuses (en fin de set, le groupe semblait d'ailleurs lui-même gêné par les fumigènes), et en dépit des tentatives du chanteur pour communiquer avec le public, ce set des Suédois ne restera pas dans les mémoires des spectateurs.

Si l'on regarde le nombre de t-shirts portés par les spectateurs dans la salle à l'effigie d'Arch Enemy, il n'y a pas de doute, le groupe de Michael Amott est visiblement attendu. Il faut dire que le quintette n'a pas son pareil pour écrire des tubes ultra accrocheurs. C'est d'ailleurs "The World is Yours", l'un des single de Will to Power qui débute ce set sur les chapeaux de roue. Alissa White-Gluz est en pleine forme vocale et concernant sa prestation sur scène, elle ne faillit pas à sa réputation de pile électrique. Haranguant le public et s'adressant à lui aussi bien en anglais qu'en français, la jeune femme ajoute énormément de dynamisme à l'ensemble du combo. Sharlee D'Angelo (basse), de son côté vient régulièrement au devant du public et semble toujours prendre autant de plaisir à être sur scène.
Jeff Loomis (guitare) semble de son côté plus effacé bien que toujours irréprochable techniquement. Les soli particulièrement mélodiques qui ont fait la signature d'Arch Enemy ne lui posent en effet aucun soucis et l'on se demande parfois si le six-cordiste américain n'est pas un poil sous-exploité au sein de cette formation. Qu'importe, cela n'empêche pas les musiciens de balayer leur discographie récente en mettant en avant une pelleté de tubes (jugez vous-même) : le groovy "My Apocalypse", l'excellent "Under Black Flag We March", l'efficace "Nemesis" et même les petits derniers "War Eternal" et "The Eagle Flies Alone". Alors certes, on se dit qu'Arch Enemy ne prend pas beaucoup de risques en occultant totalement l'ère Liiva (les musiciens ont Black Earth pour cela) mais pour un set en première partie c'est l'efficacité qui prime.
Comme chacune de ses apparitions scéniques sous ce line-up, Arch Enemy est une machine de guerre, proposant des compositions efficaces et mélodiques et emmené par une frontwoman charismatique. C'est sur "Nemesis", qui récolte son lot de pogos dans la salle, que le quintette termine son set de la meilleure des manières.

Avant l'entrée en scène des Vikings d'Amon Amarth, un large rideau noir fait face aux spectateurs pour garder l'effet de surprise quant à la scénographie. Il ne reste que peu d'espace dans la fosse lorsque retentissent les notes du "Run to the Hills" d'Iron Maiden, juste avant que le rideau ne tombe. "Raven's Flight" démarre alors et l'on découvre un casque de viking géant sur lequel est juchée la batterie de Jocke Wallgren et dont les yeux servent d'écran. De part et d'autres, deux runes Ansuz symbolisant la lettre "A" sont présentes et s'enflammeront sur "Runes to my Memory".
Dès le début du set, on se rend compte qu'Amon Amarth a mis les petits plats dans les grands, à travers un show pyrotechnique impressionnant, et propose une prestation live impressionnante. Tel un Iron Maiden du death mélodique, le quintette suédois distille des gimmicks visuels tout au long du set. Tour à tour, le casque de viking géant se dresse, surélevant la batterie, des statues géantes se gonflent, figurant les Guardians d'Asgaard sur le titre éponyme, et Johan Hegg lève sa corne à notre santé sur "Raise Your Horns" qui s'achève sur un lâcher de confettis.
Mais au delà de cet aspect visuel, musicalement les Suédois sont irréprochables. La voix de Hegg est puissante et le charisme du vocaliste attire à lui tous les regards. Le son est également bien équilibré (surtout lorsque l'on songe au désastre sonore du set d'Hypocrisy) et le capital sympathie que dégage le quintette fait son effet.
Inévitablement, les deux derniers opus du groupe, Berserker (2019) et Jomsviking (2016), sont les mieux représentés dans la setlist. Mais Amon Amarth tente de piocher de façon équitable dans son abondante discographie et n'oublie pas les excellents "Death in Fire" (tiré de Versus the World, 2002) ou "The Pursuit of Vikings (Fate of Norns, 2004), qui font leur petit effet en live.
Après avoir levé leurs cornes à boire sur "Raise Your Horns", les Suédois s'éclipsent pour revenir avec "The Pursuit of Viking". Mais c'est bien évidemment l'incontournable "Twilight of the Thunder God" qui se charge de clore la soirée, avec son combat épique entre Johan Hegg et le serpent (gonflable) de Midgard, Jörmungand.
Avec un tel set et une scénographie aussi impressionnante, Amon Amarth se place en digne héritier de combos comme Iron Maiden et franchit un palier de plus vers les plus hautes sphères du metal européen. Il y a fort à parier que le quintette suédois se retrouve rapidement propulsé parmi les têtes d'affiches des festivals dans les années à venir.

Sweden arrives in force at the Zenith in Paris on Monday night. And for those who love Swedish melodic death, it's a dream poster we're seeing. It is therefore not surprising to see that the room of the park of Villette (even in small configuration) displays complete. And yet, as Pete Tägtgren and Hypocrisy get on the boards, the pit as well as the stands are still clear.
Hypocrisy
It is surprising to see Hypocrisy on the bill this evening, since the combo has not released anything since 2013. Besides the trio (with Tomas Elofsson six-string live) takes advantage of this set to sweep all of his discography released before 2005. If on paper such a set makes you want, live conditions do not allow you to enjoy it. At first, ubiquitous smokers mask the visibility of the audience and only the silhouettes of the musicians stand out. Difficult under these conditions to realize the charisma of Pete Tägtgren, yet musician and producer eminently respected in the metal scene.
In addition, the sound is not the most optimal. An unpleasant reverb is present on the voice and the snare, while the double-pedal of Horgh's battery (Immortal) blurs the sound spectrum. This obviously does not help the audience to get into this set and it is only polite applause that the four musicians collect between the titles.
Too bad that a group with a career as long as Hypocrisy has only benefited from disastrous sound and visual conditions (at the end of the set, the group seemed to be embarrassed by the smoke), and despite attempts singer to communicate with the public, this set of Swedes will not remain in the memories of the audience.
Arch Enemy
If you look at the number of T-shirts worn by the audience in the room with the image of Arch Enemy, there is no doubt, the group of Michael Amott is obviously expected. It must be said that the quintet has no equal to write ultra catchy tubes. This is also "The World is Yours", one of the single from Will to Power that starts this set on the hats. Alissa White-Gluz is in the vocal form and regarding her performance on stage, she does not fail in her reputation as an electric battery. Haranguing the audience and speaking to him in both English and French, the young woman adds a lot of dynamism to the whole combo. Sharlee D'Angelo (bass), meanwhile, comes regularly to the audience and always seems to enjoy being on stage.
Jeff Loomis (guitar) seems on his side more erased although always technically irreproachable. The particularly melodic solos that have made the signature of Arch Enemy do not pose any problem and sometimes one wonders if the American six-string player is not a bit under-exploited within this formation. Anyway, that does not prevent the musicians from sweeping their recent discography by putting forward a shovel of tubes (judge for yourself): the groovy "My Apocalypse", the excellent "Under Black Flag We March", the 'effective' Nemesis' and even the latest ones' War Eternal 'and' The Eagle Flies Alone '. So certainly, we say that Arch Enemy does not take a lot of risk by completely obscuring the Liiva era (the musicians have Black Earth for that) but for a set in the first part is the efficiency that prevails.
Like each of his stage appearances under this line-up, Arch Enemy is a war machine, offering effective and melodic compositions and led by a charismatic frontwoman. It is on "Nemesis", who collects his lot of pogos in the room, that the quintet finishes his set in the best way.
Amon Amarth
Before the appearance of Amon Amarth's Vikings, a large black curtain faces the spectators to keep the surprise effect on the scenography. There is little space left in the pit when Iron Maiden's "Run to the Hills" notes sound just before the curtain falls. "Raven's Flight" then starts and we discover a giant viking helmet on which is perched the battery of Jocke Wallgren and whose eyes serve as a screen. On both sides, two Ansuz runes symbolizing the letter "A" are present and will ignite on "Runes to my Memory".
From the beginning of the set, we realize that Ammon Amarth has put the dishes in the big, through an impressive pyrotechnic show, and offers an impressive live performance. Like an Iron Maiden and goes one step further towards the highest spheres of European metal. It's a safe bet that the Swedish quintet is quickly propelled among the festival's headliners in the years to come.

Lived in Neosho County Nearly Forty-
one Years---Was an Honored and
Respected Citizen.
Captain I. N. Wherrett died at the home of his son, O. E. Wherrett, in Kansas City, Missouri, last Sunday where he had been taken three weeks ago for special treatment. His death was the result of a stroke of paralysis which he suffered about three months ago. His remains were brought to Erie last Monday and funeral services were held at the M. E. church, conducted by Reverend W. P. Wharton, and his remain were laid to rest in the Erie cemetery. The Erie Masonic lodge and the Erie G. A. R. Post, both organizations of which Captain Wherrett was a member, attended the funeral in a body.
Captain Wherrett has been a respected citizen of Erie and Neosho county for nearly forty-one years. He was honored and respected by the entire community because he was a man in every sense of the word. He was active and energetic and did the work of man up to the hour of his last sickness, although he had reached the ripe old age of seventy-five years. Captain Wherrett was aften referred to as an example of an ideal citizen---honest, energetic and loyal to every good cause.
The following is an obituary of his long and useful life: Isaac Newton Wherrett was born January 5, 1831, in Fayette county, Indiana, and died February 13, 1910, in Kansas City, Missouri. He enlisted as a volunteer soldier of the United States as a private in Co. K, 101st Indiana infantry, August 6, 1862, and was honorably discharged therefrom October 2, 1864, with the rank of lieutenant and adjutant. Later he helped organize recruits for Co. F, 89th Indiana infantry and was elected captain, with which company he served until the close of the war. He was married to Ellen M. Dutton in Wabash, Indiana, on April 29, 1852. To this union was born three sons, William V. of Kansas City, Missouri; Rollen M. of Chanute, Kansas, and Ortley E. of Kansas City, Missouri. He removed with his family from Wabash, Indiana to Neosho county, Kansas, June 6, 1869, and has been a resident of this county since that time. His wife, Ellen, died in November, 1872, and he was married to Elizabeth Mead in the Methodist church in Erie, Kansas, in October 1876. He is survived by his widow and three sons, all of whom were present at the funeral.
On the day that I met Woodrow "Woody" Jones, he was spending his Saturday as he spends much of his time, clearing Evergreen Negro Cemetery and other historic Houston and Texas cemeteries of weeds and overgrowth.
He's a fount of information on our history, and, through his personal efforts and through Project Respect ( www.projectrespect.com/members/whoweare.htm ) he works to clear, provide access to, document, and preserve several historic Houston and Texas cemeteries.

Gerhard Johann David von Scharnhorst tomb
Prussian General. He reorganized the Prussian Army under Friedrich Wilhelm III, after its defeat at Jena by Napoleon. Scharnhorst modernized the army and instituted a General Staff and a militia, building the Prussian military into an institution whose reputation was respected around the world for many years. He is sometimes credited with the idea of the Iron Cross award. He was mortally wounded in the battle of Gross Gorschen.
Robert Saracino of Port Colborne is a public figure well respected in the Niagara region. As former mayor, municipal councillor and Niagara Region councillor, he helped improve the lives of seniors, veterans and people with disabilities. He successfully lobbied for a local transit system for the disabled, and through his efforts the Northland Pointe, a new seniors’ residential complex was built in Port Colborne.

React, Respect, Intersect was created by two professional artists and a team of youth artists as part of the Groundswell Community Mural Project’s flagship Summer Leadership Institute (SLI). SLI teams spend seven weeks during working with artists and community-based organizations, learning job skills and creating public art throughout New York City. This mural depicts a utopian environment where vehicular traffic, pedestrians of all ages and abilities, bicyclists, skateboarders, and animals respectfully share the street. It focuses not only on traffic and pedestrian safety education, but also site-specific themes and cultural diversity.
The safety education focus of this mural was informed by workshops lead by NYCDOT Safety Education. The artists and youth artists researched safety issues near the mural site which influenced their final design. Speed of vehicular traffic, high levels of carbon dioxide in the air, and the need for all modes of transportation to respectfully share the streets are just a few of the themes beautifully integrated in to this mural.

By the respected Edinburgh practice of Sydney Mitchell & Wilson, 1900. Decorated Gothic church, cruciform plan with aisled nave, clerestory, transepts and dominating later SE tower by James Jerdan.
Aisled with white washed walls and dark-stained timber barrel-vaulted roof with carved stone corbels (steel construction above) and fleuron course, red sandstone dressings, pointed-arch nave arcade, carved head-stops at crossing; E end with blind arcading timber panelling and carved timber choir stalls, 5-light figurative stained glass window in E wall, large organ in S wall of chancel (by Foster & Andrews, 1903); bottom lights of S transept window stained glass allegedly from John Ker Memorial Church (now demolished); raked timber gallery to W wall with blind arcaded balustrade over brackets and fleuron course, timber screen to vestibule with blind arcading and stained glass panels below; tiled floor in vestibule; open staircase (altered) to tower and gallery. Marble chancel augmented by one of the finest pulpits in the country, sculpted by William Beveridge in 1903 with variegated marble insets in NE corner of crossing, red colonnettes and carved statues of John Knox and Dr Candlish.
